Whiskers and the other squirrel are cautious to meet each other but they walk up to each other slowly and carefully, ready to run at any moment in case something happens. Whiskers thinks to himself about all that fear and chaos he felt earlier that was all for nothing, he is very relieved to find out that the scary creature he was so scared about was just another squirrel.Whiskers doesn’t have many other friends so he’s happy to find someone else in these woods to become friends with. The scary abandoned house that they’re in seems to fade away now that he feels comfortable with this other squirrel. What an adventure it has been so far, from finding this abandoned house to running for his life to making a new friend. I wonder what her name is?

The St. Anthony Chorale was famously used by Brahms for a lovely set of variations. Although he attributed the chorale tune to Haydn, musicologist are pretty agreed that it was written by someone else, though they haven’t figured out who. But the Chorale is lovely, and this arrangement for solo piano makes a moving processional for any occasion. It is in the key of Bb major, and easily playable by any advanced level pianist.Note: This arrangement is also available as part of my collection: “The Wedding Pianist,” which is available on this site. This collection contains 10 Processionals/Recessionals, as well as a bonus arrangement of the hymn “O Perfect Love.”.

The fun and fascination with disguising oneself to be someone else for a moment has been expressed many times in music through compositions such as Un ballo in maschera, Masquerade or Carnaval. In the humorous variations on a theme of Robert Schumann, Peter Wittrich lets the Fröhliche Landmann [Happy Peasant] slip into different roles and sets out with him on a journey through time from the Baroque to the modern era. In ten variations, Wittrich makes the Landmann familiar with the different styles and famous themes of the music epochs by treating Robert Schumann's popular theme contrapuntally in the sense of Bach, imposing Mozart's sonata form on it or letting the Landmann dance a proud polonaise with Frédéric Chopin. Whiskers now begins on his curious adventure into the unknown. He begins carefully stepping through the forest with caution into unfamiliar territory, his ear pricked to listen out for any sounds that might be someone or something else. As he makes his way through the forest looking for something to explore, the wind begins to pick up. The trees move in the wind and the leaves rustle and fly around Whiskers which causes him to panic.As the piece moves to a more active section with the use of semiquavers, Whiskers begins to run further into the forest, losing his sense of direction from the confusion caused by the wind and all the leaves about. Whiskers frantically tries to find his way back home but the wind grows stronger blowing more leaves around which makes it even harder to see where he’s going.Eventually the leaves settle back on the ground as the wind dies down and comes to a rest. Whiskers has stumbled across something he has never seen before in this forest, a house. It looks abandoned and like someone used to live there many decades ago. He stops in his tracks to take a good long look at the mysterious looking house that towers before him.

Here's a charming piano solo inspired by Alice Oseman's series that literally has music bringing them both together! Using each letter from their names, two distinct melody lines were created as a musical cryptogram (hidden words matched to musical pitches). Both themes are simple, and I wanted this piece to capture the optimism portrayed in the first two volumes of the graphic novel (and season 1 of the Netflix adaptation). Overall this solo has a light-hearted pop feel and a driving rhythm that can appeal to tweens, teens, and adults alike. Written in the key of C major, players get to explore varied musical elements and techniques: left hand syncopation, simple rhythms of mostly quarter, eighth, and half notes (crochet, quaver, and minums for our UK Friends!), triplets, alternating legato and staccato passages, tempo changes and different dynamic markings (p, mp, mf, f, ff). Musical phrases are 4-8 measures long, which makes recognizing patterns and form easy for students. With performance directions of hopeful, happily, and relaxed, interpretation beyond just notes and rhythms is an advanced concept teachers can explore with students. This solo piece can be played for fun, talent shows, recitals, sight reading, or (for fans of the series) entertainment during Heartstopper episode marathons! This piece celebrates the essence of youth, adventure, and hope of what's to come. Total performance time: 4:35. Key: C Major Musical Elements explored: syncopation, staccato, legato, simple rhythms, dotted quarter notes, triplets, sensitivity to musical interpretation, dynamic contrast, tempo changes, pedaling.
