Concert Piece: La Tricotea (2006) was written for and is dedicated to conductor and pianistJeffrey Grossman.The work is a “concert paraphrase†in the tradition of the virtuoso piano literature. Thus it is nota set of traditional variations but rather is a virtuosic elaboration of the source material – withdifferent parts of the piece focusing on and amplifying different elements of the original.The source material is the anonymous Renaissance Spanish three-part choral motet La Tricotea.In some sources, this motet is attributed to Francisco Alonso. It was originally published acollection entitled Cancionero Musical del Palacio (c. 1490 – 1520). The text of the motet isprimarily in Spanish but includes both elements of other Romance languages and a great deal ofgibberish.

For the Prelude, I have incorporated variations of the iconic chord progression from Pachelbel's Canon in D major and took the liberty to quote three themes from other sources at three distinct points throughout. The first one marks the conclusion from the first movement of Vivaldi's Guitar Concerto in D major. The source for the second borrowed theme is unknown, and the third theme is derived from the song Somedays featured in Paul McCartney's 1997 album Flaming Pie. The main motive of the prelude is loosely based on a rhythmic figure found in a typical prelude by J.S. Bach. Although the harmony is largely diatonic, I have clearly marked key modulations that descend by chromatic steps during the episodes from B major to B major. .

The composition is a hymn to Smetana's home country of Bohemia, describing the course of the river Vltava from the source to its junction with the river Elbe. The work describes the course of the river Vltava starting from the two small sources of the warm Vltava and the cold Vltava until the two streams merge. The course of the Vltava is through forests and meadows and further through the landscape where many merry celebrations are being held; a dance of the water nymphs in the moonlight, castles, magnificent houses and ruins proudly appearing on nearby rocks; the Vltava forming eddies in the rapids of St. Johann, flowing as a large river toward Prague until the fortress of Vysehrad appear, and eventually disappearing in the distance to flow majestically into the river Elbe. Commissioned for the inaugural High Point University Piano Competition in 2015, The Giving Tree Variations draws its inspiration from two sources. The first is a beautiful metal tree sculpture on the campus of HPU, which symbolizes the university’s holistic approach to learning. Whenever I see the sculpture, it reminds me of Shel Silverstein’s classic book The Giving Tree, which has just celebrated its 50th anniversary and provided the 2nd source of inspiration for the composition. The work breaks down into five main sections – an introduction & theme, which sets the mood and provides the primary melodic and motivic ideas, and a short set of four variations, each corresponding to the four gifts given to the boy by the tree.

Naji Hakim (*1955), French composer of Lebanese descent, not only writes pieces for his principal instrument, the organ; even his piano works are characterized by many different sources, his major source of inspiration often being folk songs such as 'Auprès de ma blonde' whose melody dates back to the 16th century. The theme, which is introduced with a typical march rhythm, is developed in seven entertaining variations. One of the most popular French folk songs, interpreted by Elvis Presley and Doris Day among others, still is sung and played today. The present arrangement is an effective addition to the repertoire of every pianist.

The four sonatas in this volume are a tantalising introduction to Artaria Editions' forthcoming publication of the complete keyboard sonatas of Domenico Cimarosa. (Sonata R20, R30, R25 and R27) The present edition attempts to present as accurately as possible the composer's intentions as transmitted in the Florentine MS with the exception of the grouping of the works into multi-movement cycles. Cimarosa's scant markings have been preserved throughout and, on occasion, applied to parallel passages. The dates of the two sonatas is not known, although it is clear stylistically that the E major is a much more advanced work compositionally than the E-flat major. The latter also exists in a version as a sonata for violin and keyboard, which can be dated to Kraus's grand tour, having been written in Paris in 1785 and subsequently distributed by the Viennese publisher Johann Traeg. Since there are substantive differences in the two versions, it is impossible to say which came first, and Hans Eppstein has suggested that their may even have been a third, now lost original for fortepiano, since the extant solo keyboard version clearly represents a more advanced version. This cannot be proven, but it seems clear that the version presented here can be considered Kraus's last word in this tortuous compositional trail, probably receiving its final form for publication as part of the Due Sonata per il Forte Piano that hlstrm published about 1788 as one of the first editions stemming from his new privilege. Given that the E major work is one of considerable complexity and virtuosity, it is probable that this sonata at least was composed especially for the publication. In any case, hlstrm's edition is the earliest source of the works; a number of additional copies dating from about 1795 and later all can be traced back to it. That the composer himself was involved intimately with the edition can be seen by the unusual number of clear and precise markings and articulations.These have been accepted without comment or alteration. Occasional obvious wrong notes, the result of overlooked proof reading, have been tacitly corrected, and some of the slurrings have been regularized according to parallel passages where such do not appear to have been deliberately varied. It is the suggestion of the editor that the Adagio of the E majot sonata should be performed la C.P.E.Bach in a fantasia manner with considerable flexibility in terms of tempo and relative rhythm; to play it in a strict fashion obliviates the flow of the movement.
