The Road to Freedom is a collection of settings of four spirituals meant to describe the longing of the African-American slaves on American plantations for freedom. Many of these were based on biblical themes, the better to fool the slave-owners. The first song, Let My People Go, was used to let slaves know that Harriet Tubman, known as Moses, was in the area and ready to lead them from slavery to freedom. The second, Deep River,  refers to the River Jordan and to crossing into campground, the promised Biblical land, but that was code for the Ohio River and passing into the north and freedom.  Wade in the Water reminded slaves running away that by wading in the water they could hide their scent from the dogs pursuing them.  Oh, Wasn't That a Wide River - and then one more and maybe another to cross on the way to freedom. These lovely arrangements catch the spirit of the experience.

Let Us Break Bread Together is an African American spiritual often associated with the Underground Railroad, a string of safe places for slaves escaping the southern United States in the early-to-mid 19th century. Spirituals and work songs were sung by slaves as coded information to escaping slaves as they moved north to safety. The lyrics that include When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun suggest an association with religions practiced in Africa. However, this beautiful and inspirational hymn melody was taken up by Protestant churches after the civil war and used to celebrate the Christian sacrament of Holy Communion. This arrangement is an Intermediate Piano solo in the key of F major that builds to a percussive bass suggesting African drum rhythms and the origin of this melody.

Some slight revisions allow the rather limited harmonic language to better line up with common practice theory. The melody of the spiritual is given to the right hand throughout, with variation coming through the left-hand accompaniment. The refrain is presented twice, first with a dotted-rhythm Alberti bass and then with dotted-rhythm repeated octaves. The verse is set once, with the accompaniment doubling the melody two octaves lower and with a G-pedal point throughout. The last few measures include rising chromatic major chords covering the span of an octave before returning to the G-major tonic.

This advanced piano arrangement features a hymn (Like a River Glorious) and an American Spiritual (We Shall Walk through the Valley in Peace) on the theme of God's Peace. Written in the style of Chopin's Nocturne in F Major, Op. 15, No. 1, it features a simple melodic line with a LH triplet bass. The middle section changes key and mood as the spiritual begins, with more intensity and motion. The opening section repeats and then continues to the final coda. The piece is suitable for piano solo, church prelude, or recital piece. It reflects on the reassuring peace of knowing God.Like a river glorious is God's perfect peace // Over all victorious in its bright increase;//Perfect, yet it floweth fuller ev'ry day;// Perfect, yet it groweth deeper all the way.//Stayed upon Jehovah, Hearts are fully blest // Finding as He promised, Perfect peace and rest.The spiritual gives the simple, but profound truth that Jesus will help us through the valleys of life.We shall walk through the valley in peace; we shall walk through the valley in peace.Refrain: If Jesus himself shall be our leader, we shall walk through the valley in peace.I am an independent composer, piano teacher, and church pianist. Some of the text may date back as far as the 18th century. Although it has been used in communion since at least the Civil War, that may not have been its original intent.I have heard lectures given by researchers who claim that many African-American spirituals contain coded messages, intended for slaves, about secret meetings, clandestine worship services, and escape plans. Some songs are even said to contain maps.The texts are innocuous on the surface, so as to not alert the slave owners. Some of the double meanings seem obvious in retrospect:When Israel was in Egypt land,Let My people go.Oppressed so hard they could not stand,Let My people go.And:Steal away, steal away, steal away to Jesus!Steal away, steal away home. I ain’t got long to stay here.In Let Us Break Bread Together, this curious line may have a double meaning:When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sunCommunion needn’t take place at daybreak, nor while facing east. The lyrics could be a pointer to a specific time and place for a prohibited meeting.Whatever its original meaning, this and many other African-American spirituals are now an important part of many worship traditions.

Published by GGLS Publishing (A0.1110548). This arrangement of the African-American spiritual, Were You There, takes us through the crucifixion of Jesus, his entombment and resurrection. After the plaintive introduction, the first verse is a modified arrangement of the standard hymn and asks Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Verse 2 begins with a little hope that quickly turns to disbelief at watching nails being driven into the Christ: Were you there when they nailed him to a tree?. The left hand simulates the hammer and slowly, slowly, Jesus dies. The key of the third verse is lower than the first two, minor and dissonant and symbolic of Christ being lowered into a tomb. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? The opening motif returns now, full of quiet despair but gradually evolves into light shining from the tomb and bringing forth hope. Finally, the last verse Were you there when he rose up from the grave? is in an entirely new key from the first three verses and moves with more excitement. Joy builds and the left hand never stays down for long, constantly rising again and again as Christ is raised from the dead in triumph. We conclude with a softening and slowly into contented joy, secure in our faith and knowledge of rebirth.

The left hand is constantly moving and players will need to choose fingering that works them. I wrote this arrangement for my piano students, who continually are confused by the term , parallel major and how it differs from parallel minor. I've had various students over the years perform this piece on recitals with the parallel major version and without it. There is a nice transition to the parallel major, and the contrast in style between the two makes for a satisfying performance.
