My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music and, most importantly, that it also makes pianistic sense. Each of my arrangements is made for a specific student, so the results will vary in terms of playing level. Most decisions are based on their current skills and abilities, or where I would like for them to be when they complete the piece. This arrangement was made for a late beginner student who has almost completed Alfred's Masterwork Classics Level 1/2. She has also been working in the Prep Level of the Keith Snell books. Primary IV Class. I wanted to see what would happen if she had to do a left hand accompaniment with less (than usual) blocked or broken chords. To compromise, I gave it a lullaby feel, which worked amazingly well in a recital setting! The main theme recap was especially difficult for her, but she persevered and got it down. It's a beautiful and sweet rendition. Pedal and fingering suggestions are included.

I have composed numerous waltzes, as I have an affinity for them, especially if they have unique interest. The opening of this waltz is based on a snippet of material I heard in a beginning ballet class many years ago. The idea repeated many times, to the point of annoyance. I thought, now that A# in bar 2, bulling its way into E minor, is trouble waiting to happen. And indeed, trouble comes. This section appears several times, in different minor keys, alternating with contrasting sections, like a rondo. Every time the A# (or its transposed equivalent) is played, various harmonic disasters occur, growing more intense as the piece progresses. As for the title, I like the word 'rhinoceros.' I played the piece for some of them, and they liked it well enough.

SPIRALS IN THE SKY, BY MARTHA HILL DUNCANFOR SOLO PIANO, LATE INTERMEDIATE, 21 PAGES.....................................In this whimsical marriage of astronomy and music, my husband,  astrophysicist, Dr. Martin Duncan and I have combined our talents to celebrate the beauty of the night sky and the magic of music. M.H. DuncanMartha Hill Duncan’s passion for music started early, inspired by her mother, who sang and played the piano by ear. Martha was a member of the first graduating class of the Houston High School for Performing and Visual Arts and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the University of Texas at Austin.Her piano works have been inspired, at least in part, by her long-time career as a piano teacher and some of these pieces, as well as her art songs, appear in educational publications and syllabi. Piano collection titles include The Sunken Garden, Isla Vista Suite, Precipitations, Angular Measures, Limestone Etchings, Rainy Days and Cottage Days. Since moving from the United States to Canada, many of her compositions have been inspired by Canadian landscapes and texts. In January 2014, her youth opera, Searching the Painted Sky, with poet/librettist Janet Windeler Ryan, was premiered at the National Opera Association Convention in New York City. She was named a finalist for the 2020 Louis Applebaum Award.A former piano examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music, she is also a founding member of Red Leaf Pianoworks, a self-publishing composers’ collective. Originally from Houston, Texas, Martha and her husband Martin have lived in Kingston, Ontario since 1988. She also conducts the women’s choir She Sings! and has two grown children and two granddaughters. As a child, his biggest question was, “What would happen if...?†His first experiments involved creating foul-smelling concoctions with his chemistry set in hisparents’ basement. He survived and went on to complete an Honours Physics degree at McGill University, followed by graduate degrees in astronomy at the Universities of Toronto and Texas at Austin. Post-doctoral research was performed at Cornell University, the University of Toronto and the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1988, he became a professor of astronomy and physics at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.In his academic career he has co-authored over 120 scientific papers, which have been cited over 8,000 times. He has presented numerous invited talks at international scientific conferences and has been the guest speaker at many public lectures. His research has ranged from the study of black holes to simulations of the formation and orbital evolution of planets and comets. He is best known for the prediction of the existence of a disk of small icy bodies beyond Neptune, which he and his colleagues called the Kuiper Belt. ON THE KEYS (INMANENCIA III) Chords that tremble because their notes trill, tremble, move fast to not perish, complex arpeggios rising and falling as sound blasts, brief but wide melodies, just three or four notes, dissonant, quasi solemn, apparent scales ascending, descend, without getting anywhere, textures at last with a static vocation, looking for its instant, its present... Every texture wants to stay. The horizontal occurs only because time passes, not because the sound aspires to happen, it seeks its moment by recreating itself, renouncing what will come for what it is, the transcendent for the immanent ... On the Keys occurs from the instrument's keyboard. That title, a frequent indication in the current scores to return to the interpretation on the keyboard, is my way of protesting the over-exploitation of the interpretation of the harp and other surfaces of the piano, my way of being bold in this 21st century. The work is dedicated to the italian maestro Cosimo Colazzo.

Aphelion is one of my few pieces that's meant to tell a story and it's not incredibly specific, but here is the story of Aphelion. However, the definition of aphelion first is incredibly important.aphelion (noun):the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is furthest from the sun.And it's very important to know the definition of its absolute antonym: perihelion.perihelion (noun):the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is closest to the sun.These are terms used in astronomy to describe a celestial object's extreme distance from the sun. I'm using this to describe a relationship between two people. The type of relationship does not matter, it is simply just a relationship. However, you perceive it: platonic, romantic, etc.That is up to your interpretation.Aphelion follows the story of two people, with the start of the piece not actually being the aphelion, but however the perihelion, starting in D Major.It highlights their relationship as perfect, well-rounded, and flawless relationship. Some may call it a honeymoon era/phase or just the possible closest two people could be, i.e the perihelion.Then the two slowly drift away, with a shift to B Minor and D Minor. Issues, flaws, and problems that weren't there before begin to appear. These issues are quickly shoved under the rug, and the two pretend that they are nonexistent. The piece shifts back to D major incredibly quickly, however, there is a slight sense of uneasiness within the piece that I intended to create as it goes through this relationship that is clearly rocky, but it isn't being addressed because neither are choosing to communicate these issues.Then, the mysterious part hits very quickly, this is the aphelion. following a D Minor chord progression, then a shift into D minor itself. This part is where the relationship issues reach a boiling point, neither can stand the other and any attempt to resolve the issues is essentially useless. They stay in a toxic relationship. However, it's labeled as mysterious because the future is an absolute mystery to the two. They don't know what will happen. Then, one confronts the other, they choose to genuinely communicate.It's where the shift back to D Major occurs. They finally come to an understanding. At this point, they can choose to stay in the relationship, and work on the issues, or come to an understanding that it might not work from here, because a relationship takes two. There is a sense of peace, they are finally at peace with one another and their situation. Life can continue moving on, and the piece ends on an A Major chord. This is because A Major can be interpreted as one finally becoming content.That is the story that I intended to tell by writing Aphelion.

The project is meant to give some focus on the issue that people who suffer from depression and melancholy should be able to be open with it. And that we all should consider how to confront a person with depression -it could happen to anyone. Disconnected is a short piece for piano.Though the initial key is written with five flats in the staff (for concert D-Flat Major), there is no particular tonal center. The sound that results is modal and pentatonic at times, but the piece never leads to a particular tonic. It represents the disconnection of a person from those closest to them. Sometimes, people must disconnect from each other. It is not always easy, either. Disconnection can happen mutually between friends, and it can also happen through betrayal. This piece is primarily written about the possible betrayal that may occur. This explains why a tonic is betrayed or disconnected from. The piece is written to be played as Solemn, and a few measures into the music, the rhythmic structure disappears, turning the piece into a cadenza, allowing the performer to interpret the rhythm, tempo, and dynamics as they feel best represents the piece in their own particular mind.The piece is published as hand-written. A guide to the notation is included with the file. Original performance was by the composer at the University of Akron in a studio class of Dr. Larry D. Snider (Distinguished Professor of Percussion).

This charming piano solo was first performed by its dedicatee, Jacques Leguerney’s good friend and muse Thérèse Cahen (1897-1944), in the Salle Debussy-Pleyel. They met around 1925. Cahen was the first person outside of his family to encourage his musical aspirations. For years, they met every Saturday to read through and discuss his music. She not only helped him with piano and harmony, but also performed his early chamber works, recruiting from her entourage to help him find high level interpreters for his music. Other early Leguerney works that she premiered included the Trio pour violon, violoncello et piano; the Sonatine pour flûte et piano; and two vocal chamber works presented by the Société Musicale Indépendente (S. M. I.), Epitaphe guerrière and Clair de lune for voice, flute and piano. Their friendship lasted until Cahen was deported from Paris on July 31, 1944, only a few weeks prior to the Liberation of Paris. Working with the Center of the Union Générale des Israélites de France in Saint-Mandé (a Parisian suburb), Thérèse Cahen had dedicated herself to the care of children of deported French parents. She left Paris with these children in the Convoy 77, and was taken to the gas chamber of Auschwitz. She left a letter for him, along with her grand piano, which remained in his apartment until his death.My dear Jacques,It is impossible to write on this little page how much I have appreciated your kindness toward me for years and years, and how much happiness this has given me: there have been thousands of Saturdays, and I thought of them every day of the week.
