Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998734). This piano prelude exclusively explores the whole tone scale on C. A bell-like 2-chord ostinato accompanies the haunting main theme. These ideas are subjected to simple motivic and textural development. They appear inverted in the second half of the piece, followed by a reflective, descending coda. The piece is genuinely accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. Other Preludes by the same composer are also available via SMP.

A three-part set based on the topography of the keyboard, and its sonic possibilities and implications. The minor triads of C#, D# and G# all have white keys immediately above and below the chords. The Major triads of C and G have black keys immediately ABOVE the lowest and BELOW the highest notes. These two elements, along with the Major triads on the three sharp-key chords, have been combined into a haunting and ethereal setting, with the left-hand accompaniment stating these shapes, and the melody in the treble taking its cue from the scale implied by the chords below. Octaves, triplets, and 16ths are all part of the swirling mist of melody that surrounds the highly stable and uniform accompaniment. Each measure begins with the low octave on the root, and jumps up to state the shape being used, using dom 7ths to transition to the next sound and shape. Chopin and Liszt did not share many musical values, but they DID both utilize the shape and particular formations of various keys to suit their expressive needs. And, so we salute them both here, in this first of three pieces using this time-honored tradition of pianistic, yet evocative composition. MBB.

It came to me at 3am yesterday and I went into my studio to notate it. It's a dreamy, soothing and sometimes soaring piece that reminded me of the octopus from the amazing documentary My Octopus Teacher. Part 1 is possibly more beginner intermediate, and I think some of the parts can be played as individual solos. I've included a link to the youtube demo on the score with an above hands view and a light up keyboard so that students can follow the score and listen.My husband and children loved this piece when they heard it, so I'm excited to have it published for others to learn and play. Part 3 was an idea from a piece I improvized in the Tottenham Court tube station a few years ago (yes, there was a piano in the tube station, and there should be a piano in every tube station as far as I'm concerned :) The theme I played that day never left me and it seemed to fit here. I wrote an expanded version of part 3 called Flight in D major that I hope to include on my website singplaystudios.com and here in a few weeks, so if you like part 3, I hope you'll check that piece out too. I plan to include this work in my 20 Beautiful Piano Solos book 3 (please find the first two books and many other repertoire and ear training books on Amazon). Thank you for considering learning this piece. Indirectly, this is a structural quotation of Beethoven's variations Opus 34 (only that he chose a descending order of keys).
