This is an enigmatic and rhapsodic piece for solo piano that is composed in Whole Tone C mode and is based on the Book of Revelation Chapter 8 Verses 1-5 in the New Testament Bible. Bar 1-18 is based on verses 1-3 and is sharp, spacey and minimal - the sound of silence and of the angels. The emphasis is the sound between the notes.Verse 4 states: 'And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the Saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.' This section changes tone and phrase. There is a beautiful ascending up the keyboard, which is delecate but with hesitance. It is the light before the darkness; the potential energy before the explosion; the calm before the storm. There must be tension.Verse 5 states: 'And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar and cast it into the Earth, and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.'This section therefore is rather more dramatic, with a contrast of high and low pitched notes and chords. The final bars of the piece are suspension - sharp and repetative chords and ending on one sharp note - what happens next?The pianist should pedal freely throughout the piece and add their own dramatic touch to this very illistrative score.

The winner of the 2019 American Prize in Composition (Vocal Chamber Music division) and Finalist for the 2020 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, Zach maintains an active schedule as a composer and collaborator across the globe. His works have been performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, Bulgaria’s National Palace of Culture, Norway’s Arctic Cathedral, Hamburg’s Zinnschmelze Cultural Center, New York University Steinhardt and Shanghai, the DiMenna Center, International Trumpet Guild and National Saxophone Alliance conferences, and at schools and conservatories throughout North America. Since beginning compositional studies in 2013, his works have garnered over 25 national and international awards. Zach is also active as a pianist and conductor, having appeared as concerto soloist, chamber musician, solo recitalist, and champion of young composers’ works at the keyboard and podium. He holds a B.A. in piano performance and composition/theory, summa cum laude, from Linfield College, an M.M. in composition from Mannes College of Music, and a D.M.A. in composition and M.M. in music theory pedagogy from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he studied under Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts. With Nightfall, I wanted to capture the time at night when one is alone with his thoughts. Silences between thoughts can become almost deafening in their volume. In this time of ambiguity between sleep and wakefulness, the mind is allowed to wander into many strange and sometimes frightening regions.Beyond the main motivic material--the minor 6th pattern and various harmonizations of the chromatic scale, I found that I was using combinations of A minor (actually octatonic) and B Lydian as dual tonal centers of this piece. Since it was written for solo piano, I decided to let the compositional process be open-ended; some of what is written here is the result of improvisation, followed by painstaking revision. You may notice a touch of Chopin in the Nocturne sections, although this nocturne is a bit creepier than the Chopin.

The goal of this arrangement was to capture the atmosphere of a spiritual darkness - not just including feelings of peace and joy, but also worry and hesitancy by blurring the line between major and minor. The melody often goes unfinished, returning to the theme of the opening statement. There are also melodic references to Night of Silence by Daniel Kantor. This piece is quite harmonically complex to mirror the complexity of the sacredness and spirituality that can be experienced in times of silence and darkness.

Between two silences of the pianist, this adagio composition evolves in a 4/4 quarters rhythm. 3rd part: Two to tango for Piano solo (4/4, 1:54) Needs two to tango. A couple for a moment of rigorous rhythm. In tango and vivo rhythm, we can imagine a couple dancing tango based on the interchange of three voices of the musical composition.
