This is a one-movement sonatina in Eb major (though a sonata might be a better description of its scale) lasting just over 10 minutes. It is Classical/Romantic in style. It begins with with a slow introduction, moving through a number of different ideas, until the exposition starts with the traditional structure of 1st subject, 2nd subject etc. However, the development forgets any trace of the classical themes from the exposition and goes on a whirlwind adventure through a large variety of different themes and passages, many of which are very virtuosic, and some are more modern in style with sections of perhaps phantasmagorical 7th chord shiftings. After a very explosive end to the development, a recapitulation rounds everything off with a return of the more formal and structured 1st and 2nd subjects, as if nothing had happened. The level is very advanced (though most certainly not unplayable!), and should work well performed in concert. .

Weekend Sonatina for solo piano features two movements: I. Saturday and II. Sunday.I. Saturday is light and frolicking, the beginning of the weekend where exciting possibilities await. Contrasts in staccato and legato contrast the two primary themes of this small sonata form movement. A brief Beethoven-esque development leads to a recapitulation and a light-hearted conclusion.II. Sunday features a leisurely descending chromatic theme in the left hand against a simple, pensive melody in the right. After an accompanimental variation of the theme and a brief inversion of the chromatic line against a secondary theme, the piece draws to a close and the listener can hear the sun setting as the weekend slowly ends.From start to finish, Weekend Sonatina is close to 4 minutes in length. Each movement can stand alone or be performed together. The chromaticism in the left hand, stylistic variations, and ranges covered in each hand make this piece suitable for the advancing intermediate to advanced student.

Movement I pictures a joyful determination to make the trip, accompanied by energy enough to make the early struggles endurable. Movement II pictures rest and reflection. The evening comes when one thinks through the events of the day with peace and anticipation of continuing the journey tomorrow. Movement III paints the joy of the journey with the end in sight. High energy and much joy is found here.This sonatina was inspired by – and in many ways patterned after – Dmitri Kabalevsky’s Sonatina Op. 13, No. 1. The first movement, Allegretto, imitates Kabalevsky’s use of the arch phrase in which two bars are mirrored by the following two bars. As the movement progresses, the tempo adjusts to meet continuing challenges – all filled with energy. In the second movement, Introspection Andante, one takes the time to rest and reflect and, in so doing, to find the mental and musical balance needed on a journey as well as in music. Movement III, the sonatina’s name sake, is in rondo form and rollicks along in b minor and 6/8 meter. The tune, Sweet Betsy, always in mind yet unstated, finally erupts three times in the center section, first in the left hand (in B Major), then a second time (in F Major) before appearing in the right hand (in C# Major) while accompanied (in B Major) in the left hand. The resulting conflicting tonalities are followed by a transitional sixteenth note run leading back to the first theme in b minor as the rondo plays out.
