The pdf file contains the original score (in letter format) followed by the somewhat larger copy with dedication by the composer and fingerings by Valentin Bogolubov who premiered the 3 Chromicons.<br> <br> The sound sample is the live performance.<br> <br> The Three Chromicons were premiered by pianist Valentin Bogolubov at the Société de concerts de St-Bruno, Saint-Bruno, Quebec, Canada, on 27 January 2007. Bogolubov's adventurous, technically demanding program, which also featured the works of Alexander Scriabin and Jean Chatillon, was accompanied by video animation of numerous works of art, four of which were created by the composer (among them, the Chromicon No. 3).<br> <br> Ford explains the significance of these unique scores:<br> <br> "In both my earliest chromicons, which I had begun to create by the 1980s, and in those I continue to make today, color is the element that links what is seen to what is heard. Unlike composer Alexander Scriabin, who may have been a true synaesthete as the result of a rare neurological condition enabling him actually to hear colors, my approach to color music has been by way of analogy. Although the tones in a musical scale and the colors of a prism both result from specific vibratory frequencies, scales can be replicated in various octaves while there is no comparable transposition observable in the case of the spectrum. However, the analogy between pitch and hue is implicit in the term "chromatic scale" (the Greek chrôma signifies "color"), and on that basis it is possible to equate the twelve tones of Western music with the hues on a twelvefold color wheel: red, red-orange, orange, yellow-orange, yellow, yellow-green, green, blue-green, blue, blue-violet, violet, and red-violet."<br> <br> "By placing the pitch names of the chromatic scale in a separate band around the periphery of a such color wheel, much like the numbers on the face of a clock, and by rotating the central color wheel, it is possible for any given pitch to be aligned and associated with any hue. Such an easily constructed device, which I have dubbed the "chromonomicon," is the key necessary to decipher the musical meaning of my chromicons. The chromicon can be thought of as a calligraphic text in which each discrete area of color is a separate letter."<br> <br> "Although there are literally millions of possible colors, all of them can be categorized as one of the twelve hues shown on the chromonomicon. Instead of being written from left to right or from right to left, the color-letters in a chromicon are arranged concentrically. The shapes of the individual letters, usually painted in watercolor and "illuminated" with metallic paints, colored pencils, and other media, are the result of each artist's creative meditation. The personal meaning of the chromiconic text as a whole emerges during and after this meditation, and may be expressed by a conventional title or accompanying commentary."<br> <br> "Now, anyone wishing to realize a chromicon is at liberty to follow any path—straight or curvilinear—from the centermost letter to the periphery, constructing a cantus (melody) by notating the musical pitches associated with each contiguous color-letter encountered along the way. The cantus thereafter serves as the structural basis of a new, freely composed work. The individual pitches in the cantus may be moved to any octave, and may be repeated any number of times before proceeding to the next pitch in the sequence. Customarily, once the final tone of the cantus is reached, the entire melody is heard in reverse (retrograde), resulting in a palindrome. That palindrome is itself subject to varied repetition, so that in formal terms, each realization of a chromicon amounts to a 'mirror' theme with variations."<br> <br> "Chromicon No. 3 travels even further back in collective human memory to the eighteenth century. For all its contemporary melodic and harmonic inflections, the style is pervasively contrapuntal, summoning to mind the polyphonic keyboard textures of Bach and Handel. This is a solo piano arrangement of Almost May, best suited for an early intermediate player. Almost May - Theme and VariationsBackstory: Years ago I wrote a simple piano piece for my students. As instrumental music can fully exist outside the confines of words, it can be difficult to find the right title for something that is pure sound and possibility. I took inspiration from the time of year in which I had composed it and stamped it, “Almost Mayâ€. Like springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, “Almost May†unfolds slowly and majestically, with ever-evolving layers for the senses to discover. What to listen for: ThemeThe main theme is first presented by the piano with minimal fanfare. This part was written to be easy enough for a child, which despite being sparing of notes, delivers rich harmonic content. Every note has been carefully curated for the optimal combination of accessibility and depth. Weaving chromatically into distantly-related keys, the melody takes small steps into contrasting musical spaces. In a wordless procession, the storyline plays out, as if the theme discovers that someone very different lives next door, and they slowly become inseparable. The piano is accompanied by an airy touch of brushes against a snare drum, like the pitter patter of soft feline steps. In the low frequency range, the upright bass supports and deepens the tonal palette with its earthy underpinnings. What to listen for: Variation I The unmistakable string section arrives like a breath of warm air. Lush, warm and reassuring like sunshine on your cheeks, the string parts begin with long tones. This broadness and stability will evolve into more layers of complexity throughout the section. While the role of the string section is background accompaniment, it undergoes textural changes which allow for some layers to briefly rise to the forefront as melody. Careful listening to the string parts will reveal an oceanic churning, a motion from background to foreground with expansions and contractions along the way. Floating overtop this density is the improvised piano solo, with ascending gestures that progress in detail and density. Each instrument enters a general unfolding and growth period in the first variation. The bass and drums include more fills than before, as the ensemble tends gradually toward more grandeur. What to listen for: Variation II The final variation opens with a decadent treatment of the melody. What was initially expressed by a soloist as a childlike plea is reimagined as a two-part conversation between the piano and lead viola. The obbligato voiced in the viola is a derivation of the melody that holds the space between phrases so the listener's attention is passed seamlessly between the piano and viola part. This dialogue features commentary on the original melody in the form of ornamentation and taking surprising pathways to expected destinations. The rhythm section (bass and drums) takes more liberties in creating a verdant soundscape as the ensemble rises to a final climax.

For Solo Piano with Guitar chord diagrams.Traditional dances in ancient Armenia were essential to celebrations, holidays, rituals, social gatherings and more. This medley of Western Armenian music in 10/8 is drawn from the Anatolian song-dance tradition and perpetuated in America. In Sirahar Yem (“I'm In Love”), the Left Hand reinforces the stressed beats within the rhythmic pattern, emphasizing beats 1, 4, and 6. Beats are grouped as 3 2 2 3. Initially, this may be a challenge to play but well worth the effort to expand one’s musicianship skills! While harmony is sparingly interspersed in the inner parts, or created in intervals of 3rds and 6ths, traditionally, the ceremonial/wedding melodies Candle Dance and Hars Oo Pesa (“Bride and Groom”) are monophonic. Due to the mountainous terrain in historic Armenia and challenge of travel between villages, these two dances exist with different melodies, depending on the region. The dance steps also vary by village. In contrast, the use of a sustained note (drone) in the bass clef alters the spirit in Hars Oo Pesa where the key also changes to D major. When using the intervals of a 4th and a tritone as material for a non-jazz piece, one has to be careful not to make the music sound like jazz, as this particular interval set comprises the essential dominant chord voicing for most jazz pianists. G-C#-F#, for instance, as a representation of A13 or A7. So, this piece uses complete symmetry, mirroring and topographically equivalent fingerings throughout, so as to avoid this problem. Admittedly, the spellings are not easy to decipher. They often use the flatted form of a note in one clef, and the sharped form of that same musical alphabet letter in the other. This is to avoid endless naturals, as the half-step motion, so typical of movement between 4ths and tritones, necessitates. Arpeggiated figures, block chords, and even some delicious chimes at the close make this piece more than a mere display of intervallic and pianistic options. It has a feeling all its own, as the sequential chromatic meandering up from the lower end of the keyboard to the upper shows each color in turn, all the while keeping to the strict rules that these etudes were constructed under.This is the last of the groups of two interval pieces. Thus this piece is 100% mirrored, symmetrical, and topographically identical hand-to-hand. There are many structures which are also inversions, played simultaneously. Diminished 7ths, Dom7 b5 chords, even fifths with the tritone sandwiched in between the two halves of the fifths, are in evidence here. There are rhythmic syncopations and shifting accents. All in all a real showpiece of perpetuum mobile dissonance which makes sense even to the listener or player accustomed to Romantic literature. It's a gallop! Approx running time is 4 mins 20 secs. The piano piece Bad Hombres Jumping Over my Wall While Yelling '¡Arriba!, ¡Arriba!' was composed in Bremen, Germany, in August 2018, for the project 45miniatures by pianist Nick Phillips. The overall character of this piece responds vaguely to Nicholas Phillips' suggestion: playful/childish outbursts, in the form of heckler chords or bad hombre-like non-chord tones. The title depicts a surrealistic, clownesque, ridiculous situation; a dream for some and a nightmare for others.For those totally unaware: the expression Bad Hombres was used by president Donald Trump during the third 2016 United States Presidential Debate. While answering a question about his immigration policy, Donald Trump stated that there were a lot of drug lords in the United States and that they needed to be removed. He concluded his comment by saying we have some bad hombres here and we have to get them out. (thus implying that the responsible of US' drug problems are Latinos)Character and moods: happy, merry, mysterious. About the performance All the piece consists of mini clusters (two minor seconds). The notation can be sometimes obscure (due to the many unavoidable accidentals). To facilitate the reading (deciphering) of the score, the easiest is to follow the highest note of each cluster: they usually form a simple chord. For instance, bar 17 is (melodically speaking) a F7 chord. Got it? L = Left Hand R = Right Hand The verbal comments along the music are not meant to be actually read aloud, but alla mente (like in some Satie's music). The reason for this is not mere "virtuosity" or even intellectual hubris. The black-keys afford an access to many kinds of gestures that alternate between the black and white keys, for two hands, in a way that placement in C, F or G simply do not provide. Having the hands in and up over the black keys affords, as in this case, an easy alternation between an upper and lower hand gesture, without having to be in the same keyplane. Why are the black keys easier for this, you might ask, since they are ALSO in a uniform plane? The white keys have no diatonic gaps, but the black keys, forming a pentatonic scale with two gaps, does indeed afford just such a place to place these sorts of piano-drumming gestures. The main distinguishing feature of our setting here is the elimination of this top melody tone, which dies so fast,and yet in standard editions gets smeared across the top of many lines like excess frosting that has already been eaten. Our edition shows when each gesture begins, and does NOT emphasize how long these drawn-out single tones last, over the accompaniment. Spellings are better, and pedaling is included throughout, rather than left to laissez-faire. 10ths are often used here, and are shown are arpeggiandi throughout. Since sound is heard from 20 to 20k Hz and light is perceived from about 375 to 750 THz, there is a huge speed difference between the two kinds of waves, but overall, waves are waves. My synesthetic view of reality allows me to see pictures and colors when I hear tones. To me, C is White, Db is Orange, D is Yellow, Eb is Seafoam, E is Green, F is Brown, Gb is Red, G is Grey, Ab is Violet, A is Pink, Bb is Gold, and B is Blue. There is some logical flow to my chromatic rainbow, but admittedly it’s a little interpretive. It’s just what I see! Associating colors with notes is a personalized thing; two of my friends both have perfect pitch yet each perceive unique chromatic schemes in their minds for tones, which also differ from mine. This project shows how I use my mental color wheel to musically paint a stormy island sunset.

In total 12 pieces for piano with different tempi and characteristics.The music has a touch of minimalism in that the musical material employed in each piece is rather limited. Like only using the note c in various octaves in the first piece, only the note g in the second piece, two notes c and g in the third piece and so on. My Prelude on Duke Street (Jesus Shall Reign) is intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations. A 15-bar introduction based on the first four notes of the hymn tune prepares for the first statement of the tune accompanied by a repeated rhythmic pattern of intervals of a third. The second statement, in a different key, is essentially fugal in nature and concludes with a bridge to the final statement. This statement is the most difficult to play. The tune is played in long tones in octaves between the two hands. The difficulty comes in the quick and wide leaps to chords that occur after each melody note is struck. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

Lacerta quietly basks amongst the members of the Perseid Family of Constellations in the northern hemisphere. Originally called Stellio by the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius, it is a small faint constellation that represents a starred agama, a grey lizard with yellow or orange spots on its back or side that can change colour slightly in response to temperature or mood. This piece is built on a scale devised by Messiaen which proceeds in a pattern of tone then two semitones, and opens and closes with his Chord of Resonance built on this third mode of limited transposition. Delicate staccato contrasting with legato playing requires a sensitive touch. From music notes to words: Intshe the old ostrich is in a very good mood. Walking through the South African fields surrounding Oudtshoorn, he comes across a narrow road leading to a desolated farmyard where a lot of delicious junk is waiting to be explored. He sees two ancient metal spoons and swallows it; then he gulps down an empty beer bottle, an old, broken wristwatch and a few shiny metal pieces. On his way back to the fields, he adds two round stones to his collection of strange, edible things. Feeling extremely happy after the gourmet meal, he starts moving around in a very weird way, dancing his heart out until his legs are like jelly. Every now and then he stands still for a few moments, opening and closing his wings to cool down from the heat of the exercise; then he dances again until he collapses of exhaustion, ready to take a very long nap in the hot South African sun. .
