Incidental music composed for piano in four parts by Philip Le Bas to accompany the Japanese folk tale (ghost story) Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). This work developed out of a cross-cultural project initiated at Morley College, London, in early 2019, aiming to create a melodrama for piano solo and spoken voice to be performed in northern Japan later in the year by young students of the piano. It is based on the ghost-story above, which is widely known in Japan. The tale was transcribed and published by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1904 as part of his book “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Thingsâ€, a collection that has been highly influential in expressing popular Japanese culture over the past century. Synopsis of the tale of Yuki-Onna: Two wood-cutters, Mosaku and his apprentice Minokichi, encounter a terrible snow-storm and take shelter in an empty hut by a river. The storm gets worse and worse, but they both finally fall asleep. When Minokichi wakes, he sees a woman all in white bending over Mosaku breathing bright white smoke onto his face. She then approaches Minokichi. She is very beautiful, but her eyes make him afraid. After a while she says, “I intended to do the same to you as I did to the old man, but I feel pity for you because you are a pretty young man. If you ever tell anybody what you have seen, however, I will kill you too.†And she vanishes into the snow storm. It is then that Minokichi discovers Mosaku dead on the floor of the hut. Years later Minokichi meets a beautiful girl, who calls herself O-Yuki. He falls in love with her and they live together in his house, along with his mother, who fortunately takes a liking to her new “honourable daughter-in-law.†Over the years O-Yuki gives birth to ten children and the villagers all agree that she is a wonderful person. But she is somehow different from them, as she continues to look young and fresh, despite the passing years. Minokichi often thinks of telling O-Yuki about the events of years ago, and eventually, as he is gazing at her beauty one night, he can resist it no more. He begins to tell her about the snow storm and the terrifying snow-woman. To his horror O-Yuki becomes more and more angry, and she finally says: “It was me, it was me,… and I said I would kill you if you ever told anyone! But for these children asleep here, I would do so this very moment! You had better take very good care of them; for if ever they have reason to complain of you, I will treat you as you deserve!†As she screams at him her voice becomes thin, like the crying of the wind, and she melts into a bright white mist spiraling into the roof-beams. At that moment it starts to snow, but O-Yuki is never seen again.

Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.1335536). Hommage to Ursula is a piano piece in memory of Ursula Görsch (1932-2023). The piece is based on the six sounding letters of her last name (GERSCH, where the O is omitted, the R represents RE - the D note in Spanish, Italian, or Turkish - and the S represents the E flat, 'Es' in German), as well as on the remaining six notes of the total chromatic scale (C#, F, F#, Ab, A, B). Both Pitch Class Sets are identical from an intervallic perspective - transposed by a tritone. Such coincidences confirm to me that I am on the right path, at least musically.The reference to Turkey is not coincidental, as Ursula taught in Istanbul for many years.The initial texture of the piece - a kind of toccata with many repeated notes - is a purely musical homage to Ursula: she used this texture in some passages of her compositions. The original version (Prime) and the inverted version (Inversed) alternate. From these 24 versions of the series, 24 sections result. I add a final section based on the original series ('Das Ende im Anfange'*); thus, there are 25 sections.To order the 5 motivic elements, I generate a Latin square. The 5 elements do not rotate, but, in each of the 5 main sections, the initial motive is always the same (A), and the order of the other four (BCDE) changes, permutating according to the following Latin square:A BCDEA CEBDA DBECA EDCBA BCDEThis work can then be considered as a derivation of the 'theme and variations' structure, with the peculiarity that there are five sub-themes that are rearranged in each of the variations.This piece lasts about 11 minutes. The premiere, performed by the composer (that is, by myself), took place on November 26, 2023, at the Konzertsaal of the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, during the concert 'Gedenkkonzert Ursula Görsch und Harald Kruse', as part of the 73rd Hausmusikwoche, organized by the DTKV (German Association of Sound Artists) in cooperation with the ABK (Circle of Composers in Bremen).This is not an easy piece to listen to. It is absolutely consistent but perhaps monotonous. During the premiere, the yawns of someone in the audience prompted me to briefly interrupt the performance to inform them that the end was near. After the concert, one of the organizers suggested to me that the piece was too 'anstrengend' (demanding, exhausting). This is a solo piano arrangement of Almost May, best suited for an early intermediate player. Almost May - Theme and VariationsBackstory: Years ago I wrote a simple piano piece for my students. As instrumental music can fully exist outside the confines of words, it can be difficult to find the right title for something that is pure sound and possibility. I took inspiration from the time of year in which I had composed it and stamped it, “Almost Mayâ€. Like springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, “Almost May†unfolds slowly and majestically, with ever-evolving layers for the senses to discover. What to listen for: ThemeThe main theme is first presented by the piano with minimal fanfare. This part was written to be easy enough for a child, which despite being sparing of notes, delivers rich harmonic content. Every note has been carefully curated for the optimal combination of accessibility and depth. Weaving chromatically into distantly-related keys, the melody takes small steps into contrasting musical spaces. In a wordless procession, the storyline plays out, as if the theme discovers that someone very different lives next door, and they slowly become inseparable. The piano is accompanied by an airy touch of brushes against a snare drum, like the pitter patter of soft feline steps. In the low frequency range, the upright bass supports and deepens the tonal palette with its earthy underpinnings. What to listen for: Variation I The unmistakable string section arrives like a breath of warm air. Lush, warm and reassuring like sunshine on your cheeks, the string parts begin with long tones. This broadness and stability will evolve into more layers of complexity throughout the section. While the role of the string section is background accompaniment, it undergoes textural changes which allow for some layers to briefly rise to the forefront as melody. Careful listening to the string parts will reveal an oceanic churning, a motion from background to foreground with expansions and contractions along the way. Floating overtop this density is the improvised piano solo, with ascending gestures that progress in detail and density. Each instrument enters a general unfolding and growth period in the first variation. The bass and drums include more fills than before, as the ensemble tends gradually toward more grandeur. What to listen for: Variation II The final variation opens with a decadent treatment of the melody. What was initially expressed by a soloist as a childlike plea is reimagined as a two-part conversation between the piano and lead viola. The obbligato voiced in the viola is a derivation of the melody that holds the space between phrases so the listener's attention is passed seamlessly between the piano and viola part. This dialogue features commentary on the original melody in the form of ornamentation and taking surprising pathways to expected destinations. The rhythm section (bass and drums) takes more liberties in creating a verdant soundscape as the ensemble rises to a final climax.

My first encounter with this beautiful work by Bach was when I performed it as a piano/organ duet at the baccalaureate service prior to my high school graduation. The piece begins with bells in the distance answered by the shepherd on his flute. There is a decidedly peaceful feel to the music when the melody begins, but it is not the pastoral feel of the original, but rather a pop-inspired treatment with more syncopation in the melody. The second theme is more straight-forward in the right hand with a flowing eighth-note figure in the left hand. Following a brief interlude the melody moves to the left hand while the right plays a figure which brings to mind the tolling of a single bell. The piece closes with the return of the opening duet between the bells and the shepherd on his flute as the sun sets and the flock rests for the night.

My Prelude on Woodworth (Just As I Am) is intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations. The first section of my arrangement is simple enough. But the remainder requires advanced pianistic skill with its wide-ranging arpeggios in the left hand and the use of so-called 3-handed technique, wherein the right and left hands alternate playing the melody notes in the middle compass of the keyboard, while also negotiating the aforementioned arpeggios in the left hand, as well as quickly moving arpeggios and scale passages in the right hand. Near the end of the piece the use of the sostenuto pedal is also required. In short, my arrangement is a virtuosic treatment in 19th century romantic style of a mid-19th century hymn tune. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

Piano sonata in Neoclassical style, developing the themes briefly tried out by Beethoven in the slow introduction to the Finale of his Sonata No. 29 op. 106 (1818). This first movement (Allegro moderato) utilizes the first two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of a sonata form in a mostly delicate, fantasia-like manner, with time signature ambiguity and alternance. The second movement (Allegro) utilizes the next two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of an agitated 'scherzo' in G sharp minor, with allusions to Bach's Prelude in C minor from the second book of 'The Well-Tempered Clavier' and to Beethoven's Bagatelle in G minor, op. 126 no. 2. The Finale (Largo - Allegro ma non troppo) utilizes first the searching sections of that Introduction, as an enigmatic preparation of the big surprise in the Finale proper: a set of nine, mostly powerful variations on a tone row, yet treated not entirely with the twelve-tone technique, but in extended tonality context. Variations 2-5 allude to motifs from the themes of the previous movements. The mp3 is a self-made recording of the first movement using a Graf 1826 fortepiano sampled by Modartt's Pianoteq.
