Mevlidi Sherif Symphony ~ in English Divine is beautiful and loves what is beautiful. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) Our heartfelt prayer is that this music serves to awaken people of all religious traditions to the sacred musical treasures of Islam and that it contributes to interfaith harmony. CarolAnn Barrows & Taylor Kroff The Mevlidi Sherif, the finest expression of reverence for Muhammad (pbuh), forms an essential part in the religious instruction of most Turkish minds. We hope that this new symphony will foster an interest and understanding of the Muslim soul, even for many who have little direct contact with the world of Islam. Considering how Christians feel about their Christmas carols provides some understanding of what the Mevlidi Sherif (or mawlud) means to Muslims. Over 500 years ago Süleyman Çelebi, from the Great Mosque at Bursa, wrote the Mevlidi Sherif (then entitled Vesiletu’n-necat) so that Turks would have access to the magical, mystical story of their beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), which had previously only been available in Arabic. Over the centuries this epic poem has been recited and sung in Mosques and in homes; on countless occasions of rejoicing and sorrow, such as births, weddings, house blessings, graduations, and especially to celebrate the Night of Power and the Birthday (mawlid) of Muhammad (pbuh). Some consider it to be the most frequently recited poem in the world. In 1942, as an act of interfaith and goodwill, Mr. F. Lyman MacCallum, a Christian missionary who was born in Turkey to missionary parents, translated into English this epic poem and published it in a journal dedicated to promoting East/West understanding. This was a remarkable artistic feat as MacCallum stayed true to the traditional Turkish poetic meter, mathnawī of fâ’ilâtün fâ’ilâtün fâ’ilün, as well as holding fast to the authentic meaning of the original text. In 2015, Dr. Timuçin Çevikoğlu, from Ankara University in Turkey, discovered MacCallum’s English translation of this most beloved poem. With the intention to help those in the west better understand the very heart of Islam, he invited sacred music singer, Ms. CarolAnn Barrows from Maui, Hawaii, USA to be the first person to ever sing the Mevlidi Sherif in English. He asked her to compose music that would appeal to western sensibilities. Ms. Barrows interviewed many composers to assist her. It wasn’t until she heard from Mr. Taylor Kroff from Austin, Texas, U.S.A., that she knew she’d found the right person for the task. Using digital technology they were able to work together, even though thousand of miles apart. They amended and re-translated the text of the original English version of the poem and composed the Mevlidi Sherif Symphony ~ in English. The recording is now available online all over the world. This music was born out of our desire to help non-Muslims appreciate the love all Muslims have for their Prophet Muhammad (pbuh); to create greater understanding and peace among nations. We are not suggesting that anyone change their faith, but rather that greater world peace will be achieved by understanding and accepting the faith of others. We pray that this music will serve to remove the boundaries which divide different religious faiths by bringing to full light the underlying wisdom with which they are all united. It probably comes as a surprise to many to know that Beethoven wrote variations on the current British national anthem, as well as on a jingoistic tune sung every year at the BBC Proms. But indeed he did. In 1803 he was approached by George Thomson, a civil servant living in Edinburgh who was passionate about collecting folk songs from his own country. He wanted Beethoven to compose six sonatas on Scottish melodies-a project which never materialized, but which started a business relationship that lasted until 1820. For Thomson, Beethoven completed some 150 arrangements of Scottish, Welsh and Irish folk songs (including Auld lang syne). Towards the end of 1803, he sent him these two sets of variations for piano, saying they weren’t too difficult and hoping they would have much success.Concerning the 7 Variations on ‘God save the King’, WoO78, Beethoven made the comment that he wanted to ‘show the English what a blessing they have’ with that tune. We don’t really know who wrote it, but it became very popular in 1745 when it started being sung at Drury Lane and Covent Garden to celebrate the putting-down of the Jacobite rising. It travelled over to the Continent where in 1795 it became the royal anthem of Prussia (‘Heil dir im Siegerkranz’).It makes a great theme for variations, and Beethoven has a lot of fun with it. If ever you needed proof of humour in his music, here it is. After some counterpoint in variation 1, he gives us some nimble fingerwork to deal with before an expressive minor-mode variation that can also be played a bit tongue-in-cheek. He changes metre for variation 6, a perky march, and stays in that time signature for variation 7. A lot of the difficulty of this piece depends on the tempo you choose at this point. The coda is inspired: a brief cadenza-like descent of F major broken chords leads us into a solemn return of the theme, but with some piquant and mischievous harmonies. The final allegro brings the work to a bravura conclusion.

There are few things more majestic than an eagle in flight against an azure sky…the broad stroke of its wings as it rises and falls on currents of air. It is with an undeniable sense of grace and elegance that it soars through the firmament. From a pianistic standpoint, the left hand provides the imagery of the winds on which the melody, representing the eagle, floats. In fact, once the piece begins it does not stop until the very end. The melody of the right hand is almost piano concerto-like in its approach. At the beginning it is very chordal, stately and grand. But as the piece progresses there are moments of flourish which capture the eagle’s delight as it swoops through the sky, ascending and descending at will…the master of all that it sees.

Breathe, Op. 13 was inspired by the idea of the role of the breath in yoga as well as a means to calm down in the face of adversity. The piece starts slowly to warm up the breath into the session, which then brings more engagement of said breath to fruition. As the piece progresses, the motion is established and stays consistent until the focus starts to wander. A brief pause followed by a restatement of a past motive reestablishes the focus of the breath before becoming more active than before due to the intensity of the activity, which in turn takes longer to reestablish said focus. Motives from the beginning of the piece with the active motion from the middle bring about the coda of the piece, gradually getting softer and slowing down towards the end of the piece. This piece is minimalistic in melodic content and symmetrical in structure in order to convey the role of the breath. This advanced work is the first of a collection of Fantasies or miniature tone poems for piano . The piece is in three sections and has numerous influences, some Impressionistic, some Romantic and it always is difficult to try and fuse these styles while keeping them congruent. The shimmering opening portrays a fairie being chased by something or someone, which seems to gets closer and closer to her. This section ends with a series of dominant seventh/nine chords and a rallentando. The slower middle segment introduces a new melody and is where she is able to hide and catch her breath which then segues (via an accelerando) leading to her discovery and the chase resumes until her escape at the very end (I hope). The challenging left hand is the main engine for the melody, which is stated in the first measure and is presented again and again in different keys and accompaniment styles. The arpeggiated figures are influences of Ravel and Liszt but I tried to imbue it with a sense of delicacy even in some of the more powerful moments. This produces a light, which I imagine would coruscate in the evening forest. This work is appropriate for all pianist. This is the second of eight waltzes I composed between September 2020 and April 2024. This was the second waltz I wrote, and the second during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a gentle piece with a sense of a dream-like dance. The form is A-B-A'-A-Coda. It starts off in D and centers around the key of D, until the end, when the Coda transports the listener to an ending in G. Think of it like the dancers in the dream disappearing from sight.Regarding articulation: I use tenuto and accent + tenuto marks frequently in my compositions. I tend to use them mostly as indications for the melody and/or notes that should be emphasized or brought out. I never intend the accent + tenuto to be harsh, but it should be stronger than the tenuto alone.I intend to have a collection of all eight waltzes available for sale in addition to individual pieces. The available recording on Arrange Me and Sheet Music Plus is an export from Finale – not a live performance. Note, Finale did not keep the tempo consistent throughout. The song was written by Paul Simon over several months in 1963 and 1964. A studio audition led to the duo signing a record deal with Columbia Records, and the original 'acoustic' version of the song was recorded in March 1964 at Columbia Studios in New York City and included on their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.. Released on October 19, 1964,[2] the album was a commercial failure and led to the duo disbanding; Simon returned to England, and Art Garfunkel to his studies at Columbia University. In 1965, the song began to attract airplay at radio stations in Boston, Massachusetts, and throughout Florida. The growing airplay led Tom Wilson, the song's producer, to remix the track, overdubbing electric instruments and drums. This remixed version was released as a single in September 1965. Simon & Garfunkel were not informed of the song's remix until after its release. I hope everyone has been doing well during this crazy time. Originally I wrote these preludes as parts of composing exercises for Alan Belkin's book Music Composition: Craft and Art. They sat around for a bit until during the quarantine when I took a look at them again. I realized that these pieces had a lot of character to them, and they were quite distinct in nature. The first movement is a simple ternary form piece which begins and ends in the key of g minor and has a very neo-romantic tonal space. The B section is a brisk, more straight-forward tonal texture, but has a fun little twist sequencing up near the end of the section. The second movement was composed with the B vs Bb dichotomy functioning as a germinating cell for the rest of the movement's material. More impressionistic and mysterious than the other two movements, it also lacks a more traditional formal structure, instead relying on the development of motivic cells to make the movement cohere together in a logical way. The third movement is also a modified ternary movement, but with the A sections being played at different speeds, and the second A ending having an outro section attached. The B section is also more like a sonata form developmental section (without the required tonic-dominant modulatory feature). This movement is not only tonally very colorful, but also dynamic in regards to tempo, slowing and quickening often, giving the piece a continual sense of renewed spirit. Rather than just release the preludes as seperate pieces, I found that when played in a certain sequence, they represent a progression of mental and spiritual being that many people have, including myself, been going through during this time. As such, I made them into a suite. If it brings you a little bit of joy or excitement during this time (and after this is over), that's all that I can hope for.
