Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862659). Fur Elise has gotten a bit of a new lease on life in concert, as Valentina Lisitsa has played it as an encore on some high-profile concerts. The standard rendition of this piece is in 3/8 time, and uses a fair amount of R-L hand substitution on the melody. Our version is in 3/4, a more modern setting for a time signature, with fewer dots and flags, and uses NO hand-substitutions in that famous repeated half-step. Why bother, say the Technical Elves, behind the scenes. I agree, and thus, this setting is a straight-across figure for the RH only, with the upper final note as the sole LH kicker. Also, in much of Beethoven's music, there is a technical disconnect between some sections, openings being easy and later contrasting sections being an order of technical magnitude more difficult. So, the tempo reminder at the beginning of each section is meant to insure that the easy part does not go fast, and the hard part does not go slower. As your technical level rises, so can the pace of the whole piece, but not until then. Enjoy! MBB .

She was one of the earliest advocates and scholars on historically informed performance practices, and she made the first-ever recording of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations on the harpsichord.Landowska was born in Warsaw in 1879 and started playing the piano when she was four years old. As a child, she studied with Jan KleczyÅ?ski and then Aleksander Michalowski. Kleczynski noticed in her lessons that she had an affinity for older Baroque music, and he didn't want to impose his sensibilities onto the already apparent musical prodigy. Consequently, her mother decided that Kleczynski was too lenient of a teacher and sent her to study with the stricter Michalowski, who was a Chopin specialist. When she was 16 years old, Landowska moved to Berlin to study composition with Heinrich Urban, but was discouraged by the rigid curriculum. However, while in Berlin she composed songs and orchestral works, and she met her future husband, Henry Lew. In 1900, the young couple moved to Paris and got married. There she became associated with the Schola Cantorum, and was introduced to Vincent D'Indy, Albert Schweitzer, and other prominent performers and musicologists of the era.Throughout the next ten years, Landowska toured Europe and Russia, and dedicated herself to researching the authentic performance practices of older music. Her husband assisted her in this research, and they often utilized libraries that they encountered while touring. She concluded that it's more appropriate to play Baroque keyboard music on the harpsichord rather than on the piano. By 1909, Landowska and her husband published the book Musique Ancienne, which was the culmination of all of their research regarding the performance practices of Baroque music. She also started teaching harpsichord classes in 1913 at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin.Ten years later, Landowska made her debut in the United States, performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Stokowski. Also in 1923, she performed in the world premiere of Manuel de Falla's El retablo de maese Pedro, where she met Francis Poulenc and asked him to write a harpsichord concerto for her. She also commissioned a concerto from Falla in 1925, which would prove to be a modern masterpiece. In 1929, Landowska performed the premiere of Poulenc's Concert champêtre in Paris. By this time, she had settled in a town north of Paris, and was teaching from her school L'Ã?cole de Musique Ancienne, which she established in 1925. She offered private and group courses and an annual summer concert series that was very popular. Landowska taught and performed in this capacity until 1940, when she had to abandon the school, her extensive library, and her home because of World War II. With the assistance of her student Denise Restout, she escaped to Portugal and then sailed to the United States, and eventually settled in Lakeville, Connecticut. She continued to perform and teach in the U.S., and at the age of 70 she recorded the complete Well-Tempered Clavier, which was highly acclaimed. Landowska was 80 years old when she passed away in Lakeville in 1959.

Intshe the Ostrich is the eighth in a series of fifteen original contemporary compositions for piano, titled 15 Animal Compositions for Piano and created to musically describe the movement and habits of specific wildlife creatures. From music notes to words: Intshe the old ostrich is in a very good mood. Walking through the South African fields surrounding Oudtshoorn, he comes across a narrow road leading to a desolated farmyard where a lot of delicious junk is waiting to be explored. He sees two ancient metal spoons and swallows it; then he gulps down an empty beer bottle, an old, broken wristwatch and a few shiny metal pieces. On his way back to the fields, he adds two round stones to his collection of strange, edible things. Feeling extremely happy after the gourmet meal, he starts moving around in a very weird way, dancing his heart out until his legs are like jelly. Every now and then he stands still for a few moments, opening and closing his wings to cool down from the heat of the exercise; then he dances again until he collapses of exhaustion, ready to take a very long nap in the hot South African sun. .

Mevlidi Sherif Symphony ~ in English Divine is beautiful and loves what is beautiful. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) Our heartfelt prayer is that this music serves to awaken people of all religious traditions to the sacred musical treasures of Islam and that it contributes to interfaith harmony. CarolAnn Barrows & Taylor Kroff The Mevlidi Sherif, the finest expression of reverence for Muhammad (pbuh), forms an essential part in the religious instruction of most Turkish minds. We hope that this new symphony will foster an interest and understanding of the Muslim soul, even for many who have little direct contact with the world of Islam. Considering how Christians feel about their Christmas carols provides some understanding of what the Mevlidi Sherif (or mawlud) means to Muslims. Over 500 years ago Süleyman Çelebi, from the Great Mosque at Bursa, wrote the Mevlidi Sherif (then entitled Vesiletu’n-necat) so that Turks would have access to the magical, mystical story of their beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), which had previously only been available in Arabic. Over the centuries this epic poem has been recited and sung in Mosques and in homes; on countless occasions of rejoicing and sorrow, such as births, weddings, house blessings, graduations, and especially to celebrate the Night of Power and the Birthday (mawlid) of Muhammad (pbuh). Some consider it to be the most frequently recited poem in the world. In 1942, as an act of interfaith and goodwill, Mr. F. Lyman MacCallum, a Christian missionary who was born in Turkey to missionary parents, translated into English this epic poem and published it in a journal dedicated to promoting East/West understanding. This was a remarkable artistic feat as MacCallum stayed true to the traditional Turkish poetic meter, mathnawī of fâ’ilâtün fâ’ilâtün fâ’ilün, as well as holding fast to the authentic meaning of the original text. In 2015, Dr. Timuçin Çevikoğlu, from Ankara University in Turkey, discovered MacCallum’s English translation of this most beloved poem. With the intention to help those in the west better understand the very heart of Islam, he invited sacred music singer, Ms. CarolAnn Barrows from Maui, Hawaii, USA to be the first person to ever sing the Mevlidi Sherif in English. He asked her to compose music that would appeal to western sensibilities. Ms. Barrows interviewed many composers to assist her. It wasn’t until she heard from Mr. Taylor Kroff from Austin, Texas, U.S.A., that she knew she’d found the right person for the task. Using digital technology they were able to work together, even though thousand of miles apart. They amended and re-translated the text of the original English version of the poem and composed the Mevlidi Sherif Symphony ~ in English. The recording is now available online all over the world. This music was born out of our desire to help non-Muslims appreciate the love all Muslims have for their Prophet Muhammad (pbuh); to create greater understanding and peace among nations. We are not suggesting that anyone change their faith, but rather that greater world peace will be achieved by understanding and accepting the faith of others. We pray that this music will serve to remove the boundaries which divide different religious faiths by bringing to full light the underlying wisdom with which they are all united. He then taught piano there himself from 1885 until 1918, whilst also serving as conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre until 1911.This theatre saw the premieres of the operas composed by his teacher and mentor Rimsky-Korsakov, and he was also the conductor at the Russian premiere of Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde.In 1908, he conducted the Paris premiere of Modest Mussorgsky's opera Boris Godunov.From 1918 to 1922, he was the director of the Music-drama school of Mykola Lysenko in Kiev, where, amongst others, Vladimir Horowitz was a pupil in his masterclasses. He returned to the Moscow Conservatory in 1922, teaching there until his death. Other famous pupils of his include Simon Barere, Maria Yudina and Maria Grinberg. He died in Moscow.As a pianist, he played many of the compositions of his Russian contemporaries. His compositions, which showed the influence of Frédéric Chopin and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, include a symphony, pieces for solo piano, an Allegro de Concert for piano and orchestra, and lieder. His virtuoso pieces for piano in particular are enjoying something of a renaissance in recent years.He was the uncle of Heinrich Neuhaus and first cousin, once removed of Karol Szymanowski (Felix and Karol's father, Stanislaw Szymanowski, were cousins).(Wikipedia).

The Preludes by Cesar Cui are a fascinating set of pieces, with a distinctive character for each tonality. The pianistic challenges are equal to any other set composed before, during and after its time, and the musical attributes bring out the tender, passionate and soulful emotions of the human spirit. Beginning and ending in C Major, the structure of the set goes from minor to Major for each tonality, for example, after C major, e minor, then G Major, followed by b minor then D Major, etc. After reaching the most accidentals ('sharp's), the composer uses their enharmonic key signatures with most 'flat' minor and Major key signatures until he is back to one 'flat' and, then 'a minor' and finally, 'C Major' to conclude the set. The Preludes were brought to my attention in the 1980s from Charles Ervin, who frequented international piano competitions, and asked if I had ever encountered the opus.. From microfilm, I printed the Jurgenson edition, edited them, and recorded the first integral set of the 25 Preludes for the Marco Polo label, which was further re-printed for Naxos (8.555557). A military engineer, Cesar Cui was also a General, and composed under the tutelage of Mily Balakirev. Having French and Lithuanian parentage, he was not Russian, yet, because of his relationship with Balakirev, became known as one of the Russian Five (Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov). His music is often attributed to Robert Schumann, and more French in style than Russian. It is my hope that this set of compositions will become as well known as those by Chopin, Rachmaninov, Scriabin and the like, and performed more frequently by pianists of today and the future.Jeffrey Biegel.

I have written a programmatic, neo-romantic/post-romantic prose and musical fragment/miniature based on Schlegel's writings about a Hedgehog. Fragment in the sense that it is not fully developed, yet, in another sense, it is overdeveloped for its length. There are several modern elements in that it is bitonal at one point. At another point, I pit Scriabin's mystic chord, which is his synthetic mode, against what I feel is its nearest aeolian mode, c-minor, which is modernistically dissonant. It is written in 'classicized' AABA popular song form, which is perfect for a miniature. It revolves around the programmatic, free verse' Prayer,' a plea to God for sleep, elusive due to the mourning of lost love and the associated emptiness and grief felt deep in the night. It is motivic in that there is a repeated augmented 6 to a half-diminished cadence that introduces the theme and then serves to transition each small section, in a secondary dominant style repetition until reaching tonic. -A1 is a simple statement of the linear theme and harmony in 6ths, and 9ths, almost in keeping with the introductory and transitionary cadence, at least intervallically. -A2 is a restatement of that theme with an added countermelody (which becomes the subject of section B) woven between the upper linear melody and the altered bass accompaniment. -B begins with a short statement of the countermelody bi-tonally, the left hand in c minor, the right in g minor. There is a brief transposition between several keys, bitonally, while the sostenuto pedal holds a pedal tone until it attenuates completely. The two measures build from repressed despondency to rage, as strong emotions often do, quickly turning to dissonant chaos. The dynamics and intensity build to a diminished chord whose top note moves up half a step to a Scriabin mystic chord arpeggio. The held sustain pedal melds the dissonance together with emotional tumult, which fades as quickly as it came, as outbursts often do. -A3 starts with the motivic cadence and a deep bass pedal tone. This section is the crowning moment in the piece. In sixths, the macabre accompaniment moves to the right-hand upper tessitura as the more developed 'A' melody moans below in the bass and baritone as the music ebbs away. A simple c-minor arpeggio strains against a very similar Scriabin mystic chord arpeggio, an octave or a minor seventh apart, ending on an A major and A flat in sweet, gentle, unresolved dissonance against a dying root pedal tone, the final teardrop.

For ensemble and percussion This work was written in February 2004 in response to a call for pieces on the theme of 'The Four Temperaments'. This was part of CoMA’s Open Score project, made possible with funds from the Esmée Fairbairn and PRS Foundations. Programme note:'Subside' outlines a slow mood change from controlled violent anger to tenderness, then a sudden flip back to anger again. Technical notes: Percussion is essential, with the choice of instruments left to the discretion of the player(s), using the directions in the one-page score as a guide. The percussionists play on the 2nd and 4th beats throughout the piece - accenting the 4th beat. Other instrumentalists are divided between Parts 1 - 4. Parts are available in numerous transpositions - though it should be possible for instruments in C to read from the score. The dynamic markings in the score apply to all the parts. The size of the ensemble is not indicated, but ideally there should be enough players to allow for a reduction in the number of people playing two bars before letter D, and a further reduction to solo instruments six bars before letter E. However, this guidance can be ignored and the piece played by quite a small group; for example - violin, piano and percussion, or organ and percussion. If flutes and violins play Part 1 - the flutes may play an octave higher than written until letter A, and the violins may play tremolando until letter A. Keyboard players can play combinations of all parts. In addition, or alternatively, the keyboard players may double parts 3 and 4 an octave lower than written where indicated by the horizontal brackets, for example in the third and fourth bars. The allocation of instruments to the parts is left to the discretion of the musical director / performers - but should take account of the dynamic markings and expression indications. The last 2 bars of the piece are played 5 times in total.

Practice Tips: In order to play this piece, you must be able to play octave chords with multiple notes and be able to fluidly switch hand positions. Keep in mind that an F-flat is an E, an E double-flat is a D, and a B double-flat is an A. The third beat of measure 22, then, is a third: A-C. The right hand ostinato (repeating pattern) will get annoying if you play the B-flats too loudly. Instead, voice the lower notes whenever the pattern appears. The left hand has the melody in the second two lines of the piece. Make sure to voice the top of all of the chords. When the right hand enters with the same melody, it also continues some of the opening ostinato – make sure that the theme is clearly heard. Don't get too loud in measure 15. Remember that the loudest section is still to come! There are a lot of notes in measures 21-26. If you're not careful, it will sound muddy and dull. Give the most attention to the top note of the right hand and the bottom note of the left hand – this will help make your sound more clear. If you are having problems with some of the jumps (such as the left hand in measure 23), make sure you have a good fingering and then drill it multiple times. Start at a very slow metronome speed and gradually move up by 5 BPM until it gets too hard. If you do this day after day, you should eventually be able to play it! If this piece is too difficult, there exists an alternate version in C major. Most of the hard jumps have been removed. The end is also slightly different and should be easier to voice.

Around twenty years ago I started playing around with a sound. It wasn't a normal sound, being 7 beats to the bar and alternating at times with 6 beats to the bar. Slowly it grew in me, to a draft version. Then, I moved to another country, and for almost 11 years I didn't have access to a piano or full length keyboard, so it lay waiting in my heart all that time, until recently, sitting at my new digital piano, the sound came forth. It is the sound of the darkness of battle, of Jesus wrestling the keys back from the devil in that one decisive blow on the cross, and then the exuberance of victory, and the cry, It is finished.

This is a piece for piano in C major with a fairly free style which lasts around 3 and a half minutes. It is quite advanced. The piece begins with an introduction, after which there are some short fugato sections and with quite difficult and fast passages that lead to a slower Eb major section. There is then a repeat of some of the introduction until a very fast passage follows. Then there is another slow section but in E major, which suddenly ends after a while with a loud and interrupting C major chord that brings on a short and fast passage of octaves. The piece ends with a succession of strong chords.

It is usually played by the instruments called Gamelan. Bali is an island in Indonesia rich with cultural traditions that are very much rooted in myths and legends. After understanding deeper of the legend of “Kebo Iwaâ€, I was so drawn to the character and the plot that I decided to tell the story in my piano composition. I was able to use different kinds of musical techniques to express different moods. One of them is to apply the Pentatonic ‘Balinese Pelog’ Scale in B flat Major, which represents the majority of the Gamelan sound that is usually transcribed into Western notations. Below is the synopsis the “L’amore di Kebo Iwaâ€. A Once upon a time, in Bali, there was a husband and a wife who dearly wanted to have a baby. They prayed to God for a very long time. Finally, God heard their prayers and blessed them with a baby boy. But there was something special about this baby boy: he was very big- a giant baby. They named him Kebo Iwa. Kebo Iwa grew up with a good heart and became a gentleman. He was a kind hearted giant; he protected the village dearly. One day, the King of Majapahit from Java wanted to conquer Bali. He had heard about Kebo Iwa and knew that his army would lose to Kebo Iwa. B Therefore, the King of Majapahit tricked Kebo Iwa. He invited Kebo Iwa to Java island, promising that he would arrange a wedding for Kebo Iwa to marry his daughter, the beautiful Majapahit princess. Kebo Iwa was so in love with the princess, so he happily travelled to Java island. C After he arrived in Java, the King of Majapahit asked a favour from Kebo Iwa to dig a well, with the reason for it being the dry season. Kebo Iwa then sincerely gave some help and started digging a big, giant well. D However, the King Majapahit never meant to deliver his promise to Kebo Iwa. Instead, the King Majapahit commanded the troops to cover the well with mud and boulders. But when Kebo Iwa realized, it was too late. He was already in the position that was far too deep below - at the bottom of the well. Kebo Iwa then cried loudly and sadly with a broken heart until his last breath. He was buried alive. Soon after that, the Majapahit troops attacked and conquered Bali. E At last, the well was covered and grew a hill of flowers. To this day, the Bali villagers still remember Kebo Iwa as their hero. To honor him, they erected a giant statue of Kebo Iwa in Gianyar, Bali, as a memorial.

Through The Years is a piano solo arrangement of the 1918 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano. Â Since the piano version no longer had words I added a variety of textures and harmonies to the simple melody. Â I begin softly with just single moving notes in each hand, then the next phrase add a harmony note, and I keep adding texture until both hands have full chords. Â Then a Time Signature change to a grazioso section which reharmonizes the melody several different ways. Â This is a piece of great emotional drama and beauty. Russian Dreams for solo piano by Philip Le Bas, 2018 This 4-minute stand-alone piano piece has a very definite Russian flavour! It begins in a reflective, romantic manner, building layer upon layer of drifting ideas, leading to a brief falling theme which gradually fades away. A much more dramatic kind of dream then emerges, requiring some virtuoso piano technique, running helter-skelter through images of Cossack dance, becoming wilder and more and more out of control, until it finally runs itself out. The original theme then returns with the addition of a sort left-over turbulence, which gradually dissolves into a peaceful ending.

The aim of this study is to get a feel for the exact point on the key where the hammer strikes the string. With the sustain pedal down, tap the left hand G gently with the 3rd finger and wrist so no sound is heard, then slowly increase the weight of the tap until a sound is heard. Keep the G so it is just sounding, then add the right hand with arm weight so it plays loud.Duration 1 min - 2 pages of music.
