The Raymond Variations for Piano (Set 1), received its world premiere on 2nd December 2015 at the 1901 Arts Club London, performed by Lorraine Womack-Banning as part of a memorial tribute concert to her late husband Raymond Banning (former professor of pianoforte at Trinity College London). The Variations are based on the three Andantino themes which form a central part of the ‘Raymond Overture’ written in 1851 by French composer Ambroise Thomas: 1811-1896. There are nine piano variations in total; these include a mix of both full and short partial variations (including a very short declamatory two chord introductory variation). The variations are not numbered or set-apart in a conventional manner, rather they form part of a continuous whole, and are separated only by bridge passages and/or cadence points; they last a little under eight minutes in duration, and strongly exploit the passionate elements of Thomas’s themes. They have been written for the most part in an accessible tonal style (with a passing nod to Messrs. Beethoven and J.S. Bach) and are based predominately in the home key of D minor, but they do also take advantage of many 20th and 21st century harmonic techniques where deemed appropriate: e.g. added note chords; cluster chords; percussive chords, and melodic deflection. In particular, the interval of the major 7th and its enharmonic equivalent(s) (the most distinctive interval in the main andantino theme from the overture) is heard in various different guises throughout the variations: this includes its inversion the minor 2nd which has a very distinctive sharp dissonant quality. Much play is made of these intervals – to somewhat humorous effect in variation 8 (the joker in the pack) heard some three quarters into the set, here the dissonant interval is pounded out double forte before hastily leading into some boisterous cluster harmonic instability; then quietly begins variation 9 which duly brings the set to a close. Look out for the sting in the tail!

Quite possibly the longest set of piano variations in the entire classical music literature, with the exception, perhaps, of certain sets of variations for piano by Kaikhosru Shapurgi Sorabji. This work ends with a monstrous 35-page long fugue. In the 18th century, Bach composed the Goldberg Variations (30 variations), in the 19th century Beethoven composed the Diabelli Variations (33 variations), in the 20th century Frederic Rzewski composed The People United Will Never Be Defeated (36 variations), and now, in the 21st century, Gary Noland has composed his monumental 39 Variations on an Original Theme in F Major. (There seems to be a pattern of three variations added on for each century). This is a work for adventurous first-rate pianists! Some of the variations are self-contained and may be played separate from the whole.I'm fascinated by your variations. Perhaps a marathon performance with many pianists doing several variations? The task for the composers was to compose a musical piece with different variations and styles based on a given rhythmical theme which is build by the morse code of I-R-I-N-I. IRINI is a greek word and means peace.The morse code is ( * is a short note, - means a long note ):* * * - * * * - * * *I R I N IIn my composition I use different musical styles (baroque, classical, romantic, modern) and different musical themes as well to express my understanding of piece on earth. The rhythm of IRINI can always be heard in the background. The piece ends the same as it starts.

Passacaille in G minor by Handel: This is the original Handel Theme in G minor with 4 of Handel's variations and the 2 variations from the recent popular Halvorsen version transcribed to G minor. My student liked the Halvorsen version but he was unaware that this was originally a piece by Handel. So I took my favorite variations and original theme in G minor and combined it with 2 of the Halvorsen variations. The Halvorsen variations are in F minor, so I transcribed them to G minor. He performed it for an annual piano incentive program in New Jersey and it was well received and he got a lovely evaluation from the judge on his performance. The Handel in its entirerty, in my opinion, gets a bit too repetitive and so does the Halvorsen in its entirety. So combining a little of the new style into the Baroque style made for an over all more interesting perfromance. Nothing has been simplified. This is Handel and Halvorsen's writing, just put all in one key and does not include all their variations.

Highland Bee Keeper (Etude #11) is in a Light Fusion style reminiscent of certain European improvisational artists, particularly those heard on the ECM record label. It has a straight 8th-note feel and consists of three sections: mm. 1 - 42 present the main themes; mm. 43 - 84 represent a solo section with an improivisational-like melodic line played over open fifths with the left hand in recurring syncopated rhythms. Mode names are used in place of chord symbols (over the treble cleff) that indicate to source of the melodic material; the third section, mm. 85 - 122, is a return to the first section, with small variations and a short coda.

The theme is God Save the King/Queen, thenational anthem of the United Kingdom.The pitch material of the variation accompaniment is derived, at some points, from subscriptsand coefficients from chemical formulae and balanced chemical equations.Each of the variations also pokes fun at a different element, style, or method of 20th centurymusic competition. So this work is also a parody of sorts.This work should be performed with a slight break (almost a breath) between each variation.Dynamic markings are provided as a guide but performers should use their own judgment.Pedal should be used by the performer where appropriate. It probably comes as a surprise to many to know that Beethoven wrote variations on the current British national anthem, as well as on a jingoistic tune sung every year at the BBC Proms. But indeed he did. In 1803 he was approached by George Thomson, a civil servant living in Edinburgh who was passionate about collecting folk songs from his own country. He wanted Beethoven to compose six sonatas on Scottish melodies-a project which never materialized, but which started a business relationship that lasted until 1820. For Thomson, Beethoven completed some 150 arrangements of Scottish, Welsh and Irish folk songs (including Auld lang syne). Towards the end of 1803, he sent him these two sets of variations for piano, saying they weren’t too difficult and hoping they would have much success.Concerning the 7 Variations on ‘God save the King’, WoO78, Beethoven made the comment that he wanted to ‘show the English what a blessing they have’ with that tune. We don’t really know who wrote it, but it became very popular in 1745 when it started being sung at Drury Lane and Covent Garden to celebrate the putting-down of the Jacobite rising. It travelled over to the Continent where in 1795 it became the royal anthem of Prussia (‘Heil dir im Siegerkranz’).It makes a great theme for variations, and Beethoven has a lot of fun with it. If ever you needed proof of humour in his music, here it is. After some counterpoint in variation 1, he gives us some nimble fingerwork to deal with before an expressive minor-mode variation that can also be played a bit tongue-in-cheek. He changes metre for variation 6, a perky march, and stays in that time signature for variation 7. A lot of the difficulty of this piece depends on the tempo you choose at this point. The coda is inspired: a brief cadenza-like descent of F major broken chords leads us into a solemn return of the theme, but with some piquant and mischievous harmonies. The final allegro brings the work to a bravura conclusion.

This set of variations is made up of 7 short waltzes I composed based on the theme of Brahms’ waltz in d, Op 39 #9. My waltzes can be played effectively at many different tempos, and I play them individually for different exercises in ballet class. For this publication I string them together as a short recital piece in the traditional variation set process by which each waltz is contrasted with the theme and with the other waltzes as to tempo, expression, and dynamics. It will be noticed that I give no tempo, expression or dynamic markings in my score. My own performance can be found in my album Variations and Adaptations for Ballet Class, Volume 3, Schumann and Brahms, but I welcome any pianists interested enough in this piece to play it to make their own decisions as to tempo, etc.

By Mike Strand, ASCAP This sonata is in the style of Ludwig von Beethoven, whom this composer has studied and greatly admires.The audio sample is taken from Movement 3: The end of variation 2, all of variation 3 (rock), and the beginning of variation 4 (rag). Movement 1 This is the result of my experimenting with the first movement of Beethoven’s piano sonata no. 23 op. 57. The Beethoven sonata’s overarching tonality based on F minor evokes a mood of darkness and despair. I used the time signature 4-4 instead of Beethoven’s 12-8, and my sonata introduces a new set of themes and motifs with tonality F major. These modifications posed interesting problems in figuration and modulation and changed the mood of the piece. Movement 2 This is a slow movement that might be characterized as minimalistic. The player should accentuate the right-hand octaves corresponding to the gradually unfolding melody. Movement 3 This is a theme with five variations, among which are rock, rag, and swing.
