Pachelbel's Canon Pachelbel's Canon is, in fact, the traditional title for a composition by the German composer Johann Pachelbel. Other names for the work include namely: Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo, Canon and Gigue in D, and of course Canon in D. We do not know when or why in particular it was written. The oldest copy is surprisingly from the 19th century. It is important to realize that it was a common routine for organists to practice improvisation on the chord progression underlying the canon. Pachelbel originally scored the Canon notably for three violins and continuo. He also in fact paired the Canon with a gigue. The movements are homotonal, to clarify, both are in the key of D major. History In due time, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style and remained in virtual oblivion for centuries. The Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra, however, recorded an arrangement of it in 1968. As a result, it gained approval. Many ensembles began likewise to record the piece in the 1970s and by the 1980s became ubiquitous as background music. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Also, since the 1980s, it has been not only wildly popular for weddings, but also for funeral ceremonies in the USA and Europe. Pachelbel Background Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period. Works Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous, particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard. Influences Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music. Legacy All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works.

In 1797-1798, Beethoven sketched a piano sonata in E flat major which remained unfinished, yet its simple, Haydnesque Finale is the most elaborate movement. For this world premiere realization (suggested by Armando Orlandi at the Centro Ricerche Musicali www.lvbeethoven.it and dedicated to them), only completion of harmony was needed, as well as a few editorial choices to delete some unneeded asymetry and to repeat the codetta of the theme in the end with a different, more stable harmonization. Useful for people interested in studying Beethoven's sketches and the evolution of his style, as well as for intermediate piano students. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. My Variations on the hymn tune Gordon (My Jesus, I Love Thee) are intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations. The four variations in this set display increasing rhythmic complexity as one plays them from beginning to end, ranging from continuous streams of eighth notes to eighth-note triplets to sixteenths. The first, and simplest, variation can be played alone. Variations 2-4 are written as a continuous group, though they too can be played individually if desired, by adding a conclusive tonic note in the bass. For the most part the pitches of the hymn tune are presented without ornamentation, though there are occasional exceptions. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.1335536). Hommage to Ursula is a piano piece in memory of Ursula Görsch (1932-2023). The piece is based on the six sounding letters of her last name (GERSCH, where the O is omitted, the R represents RE - the D note in Spanish, Italian, or Turkish - and the S represents the E flat, 'Es' in German), as well as on the remaining six notes of the total chromatic scale (C#, F, F#, Ab, A, B). Both Pitch Class Sets are identical from an intervallic perspective - transposed by a tritone. Such coincidences confirm to me that I am on the right path, at least musically.The reference to Turkey is not coincidental, as Ursula taught in Istanbul for many years.The initial texture of the piece - a kind of toccata with many repeated notes - is a purely musical homage to Ursula: she used this texture in some passages of her compositions. Besides that, this piece contains no direct quotation from Ursula's music.The work Hommage an Ursula is based on a series of 12 notes. The original version (Prime) and the inverted version (Inversed) alternate. From these 24 versions of the series, 24 sections result. I add a final section based on the original series ('Das Ende im Anfange'*); thus, there are 25 sections.To order the 5 motivic elements, I generate a Latin square. The 5 elements do not rotate, but, in each of the 5 main sections, the initial motive is always the same (A), and the order of the other four (BCDE) changes, permutating according to the following Latin square:A BCDEA CEBDA DBECA EDCBA BCDEThis work can then be considered as a derivation of the 'theme and variations' structure, with the peculiarity that there are five sub-themes that are rearranged in each of the variations.This piece lasts about 11 minutes. The premiere, performed by the composer (that is, by myself), took place on November 26, 2023, at the Konzertsaal of the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, during the concert 'Gedenkkonzert Ursula Görsch und Harald Kruse', as part of the 73rd Hausmusikwoche, organized by the DTKV (German Association of Sound Artists) in cooperation with the ABK (Circle of Composers in Bremen).This is not an easy piece to listen to. It is absolutely consistent but perhaps monotonous. During the premiere, the yawns of someone in the audience prompted me to briefly interrupt the performance to inform them that the end was near. After the concert, one of the organizers suggested to me that the piece was too 'anstrengend' (demanding, exhausting). One of the earliest CDs I bought was a CBS Great Performances disc entitled “Pachelbel’s Canon: Baroque Favorites.†I can recall listening to it over and over. Among my favorites were Handel’s “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba,†Mouret’s “Rondeau,†Albinoni’s “Adagio for Strings and Organ in G minor (which I later discovered was actually written by Remo Giazotto in 1958), and, of course, Pachelbel’s Canon in D.The Canon has been a source of musical inspiration to a great number of artists over the years including Maroon 5’s “Memories†in 2019 and George Winston’s “Variations on the Kanon by Johann Pachelebel†from his 1982 album December.My arrangement is a series of variations starting with a simple statement of the chord progression and gradually making use of the themes as the piece progresses. In this respect, it is more of a chaconne than a true canon. (A chaconne being a type of musical composition which uses a repeated short harmonic progression as a vehicle for variations and melodic invention). It eventually works its way to a section of forte chords based on the rhythm of the second theme before gradually returning to a simpler use of the chords and bass line from the opening.

It’s our tradition that the last stanza of a hymn is sung in unison, so that I as the organist can change the harmonization and keep things interesting. Sometimes I know ahead of time what I’m going to do, and sometimes I make it up on the spot.On this particular morning I planned on being spontaneous. (Can spontaneity be planned?) When we got to the final stanza, I threw on the 16′ pedal reed and went to town.I don’t know if this is the case for all musicians, but while I’m playing my brain is working on several different levels. Most of these are involved in actually playing the music, but there’s also a running commentary on how things are going. This commentary is usually really boring: It’s going okay. It’s going okay. It’s going okay. Sometimes the messages are more interesting: Uh-oh. She just dropped her mute. I missed that chord; remember to circle it when we’re done. My page turner appears to be on fire.So: We’re in the final stanza of Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun. Big, majestic hymn. Over a hundred congregants and choir members are enthusiastically singing in unison. I’m leading them from the organ with an improvised accompaniment that involves all of my limbs. It’s fair to say that I was concentrating hard.Suddenly the commentary part of my brain breaks in: Dude, your feet are totally playing Canon in D. Cool!Canon in D is the most famous work of Johann Pachelbel, a German composer who preceded Bach by a few decades. It’s overused at weddings, but it’s actually a really good piece of music. The original is for three violins and a basso continuo part, which would usually have been played by harpsichord and cello. In this case, the basso continuo plays the same eight measures again and again throughout the piece. This technique of repetition is called a ground bass. While that’s going on, the violins play several different themes on top of it.When I was improvising that Sunday, my feet had accidentally wandered into that ground bass part, which happened to fit nicely with the melody we were singing. During the sermon (sorry Pastor!) I started going through the violin themes in my head, seeing if any of them could also match up with the hymn tune. Some of them worked and some didn’t. I decided to write a sort of theme and variations, where the hymn tune appears in various forms. Sometimes it’s played along with one of the violin themes, and sometimes a violin theme serves as an interlude on its own. And except for one passage, the left hand is always playing some version of the basso continuo theme. I also changed the meter from 4/4 to 3/4 to make it more interesting. It culminates in a climax worthy of a king. I hope you enjoy it.

The piece opens mysteriously, hypnotically, with delicate left hand figurations, becoming more aggressive heading into the Latin variation, with its steadily driving rhythm, then returning to the ethereal opening measures leading into the 4-bar coda, with the left hand firmly in D minor as the right hand plays the first eight notes of the tune in A minor. Piano sonata in Neoclassical style, developing the themes briefly tried out by Beethoven in the slow introduction to the Finale of his Sonata No. 29 op. 106 (1818). This first movement (Allegro moderato) utilizes the first two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of a sonata form in a mostly delicate, fantasia-like manner, with time signature ambiguity and alternance. The second movement (Allegro) utilizes the next two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of an agitated 'scherzo' in G sharp minor, with allusions to Bach's Prelude in C minor from the second book of 'The Well-Tempered Clavier' and to Beethoven's Bagatelle in G minor, op. 126 no. 2. The Finale (Largo - Allegro ma non troppo) utilizes first the searching sections of that Introduction, as an enigmatic preparation of the big surprise in the Finale proper: a set of nine, mostly powerful variations on a tone row, yet treated not entirely with the twelve-tone technique, but in extended tonality context. Variations 2-5 allude to motifs from the themes of the previous movements. The mp3 is a self-made recording of the first movement using a Graf 1826 fortepiano sampled by Modartt's Pianoteq. One almost can feel the atmosphere of the Middle Ages in the piece, with the strumming of the lute and the improvisation of the flute on top. The simple accompaniment is certainly dance like in character. It is a piece from Intavolatura de Cimbalo (Harpsichord Tablature) by Antonio Valente, a Neapolitan composer and organist. This collection was published in Naples in 1576. Lo Ballo Del' Intorcia is a lively dance piece typical of the Renaissance period. It's known for its dancelike rhythms, lively melodies, and often features variations and improvisatory passages characteristic of the keyboard music of the time. Valente's work represents an important contribution to the keyboard repertoire of the late Renaissance, showcasing the vibrant musical scene of Naples during that era.
