Duration 13 minutes; 30 secondsBy ROBERT VAN HORNE Composing THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO for Piano & Orchestra was a journey of inspiration, passion, and deep personal connection for me. Having traveled to China, I was most impressed with seeing the Great Wall. Years later, I composed a musical work for piano and orchestra - a creative and classic concerto, capturing the Great Wall's grandeur and majestic attraction.My first visit to the Great Wall of China was in 1983 while engaged as a pianist onboard a cruise ship that sailed the waters of Asia. My first impression of seeing the Great Wall and the scenic landscape surrounding it, was one of awe and amazement.At that time, I did not realize the lasting effect this memorable attraction would have on me. Inspired and motivated by several cherished Chinese excursions to the Great Wall during my cruise ship engagement, I began the monumental task of scoring music for piano and orchestra several years later. An excerpt from 2008 Music Teacher of California Magazine review states “…The Great Wall Concerto is pleasant to listen to and has a retro 1940’s movie soundtrack mood about it - Rachmaninoff style chords against melodies in the strings...Listening to this piece, I imagined a film starring Joan Fontaine and Claude Rains as star crossed lovers fleeing their respective spouses on a visit to China.â€After many years of offering the original Conductor’s Piano & Orchestra Score of the concerto with instrumental parts (currently available at Sheet Music Plus and Sheet Music Direct), the Duo Piano Score of THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO for 2 Pianos, 4 Hands is now also available at those two websites.Both Piano I and Piano II parts are clearly notated with phrasing, dynamics, accents, suggested fingerings and musical word descriptions for 2 Pianos, 4 Hands performances. THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO for 2 Pianos, 4 Hands makes a wonderful and memorable performance piece for two piano recitals as well as a score for practicing with an orchestra, since Piano I is the original piano part.A 2 Pianos, 4 Hands recording or video of THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO is not available at this time, however, a 2006 recorded version with Piano & Orchestra is available for demo purposes only. FROLICAdvanced Intermediate Piano Soloby ROBERT VAN HORNE  9 pagesDuration is about 3:20 In 1995, while performing at Nordstrom Valley Fair in San Jose, CA, I was asked to participate in a group of other Nordstrom pianists from all over the United States in a charitable Holiday project to benefit the “Make A Wish Foundation.†I was told to record several Holiday pieces and submit them to the main office in Seattle. It was a sunny Saturday morning in May when I recorded in my home a few of my favorite holiday songs, like Silent Night, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and other Christmas carols.After doing this, I asked myself, why don't I compose a new instrumental piano piece and submit it along with the other familiar demo examples. I imagined children playing in the snow, sledding down hills, their excitement on Christmas morning, and the wonderful spirit of the holiday season. After a little while I composed this piece. I then thought to myself; “I’ll call it CHRISTMAS FROLIC. Even though Nordstrom never used this piece on their Holiday CD, I performed it for audiences. I remember once telling a friend, “Here’s a new piece I composed called CHRISTMAS FROLIC, however, it can only be played during the Christmas season. My friend replied; “Robert, why don’t you just call it FROLIC, then you can play it all year long.The sheet music is clearly notated with dynamic and articulation marks, phrasing, pedal indications, suggested fingerings and appropriate musical terms for playing. This advanced intermediate piano solo can be played year around. It is an excellent teaching piece that can be used in recitals and school musical events and makes and excellent encore for professionals.It is a delightful musical listening treat for audiences and ideal for more advanced piano students. FROLIC was recorded as a piano selection in 1998 on Robert’s CD entitled PIANO & MEMORIES. Many of these chords include jazz ninths. Time: 2:30 A kindly old gentleman who attended my concerts would always request BUMBLE BOOGIE. To honor his request, I decided to create my own arrangement using two Classical music favorites. As a piano entertainer, Liberace was known for taking Classical music and popularizing it. So in the style of Liberace, I took Grieg's A MINOR PIANO CONCERTO and Rimsky-Korakov's FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLE BEE, added a twist of left hand Boogie Woogie and created the BUMBLE BOOGIE CONCERTO. This arrangement is clearly notated with dynamic marks, phrasing, suggested fingerings, pedal indications, and appropriate musical terms for playing. The left hand incorporates a Boogie Woogie style ostinato while the right hand plays the main themes of the famous Grieg Concerto and Flight Of The Bumble Bee. I added my own musical transitions to create a flamboyant sound of suspenseful tremolandos and showy runs, concluding with two flashy glissandos. This is a wonderful recital and encore piece that will delight audiences...ideal for both students and professionals. After attending a piano concert in 2009 featuring several works by Maurice Ravel, Robert was inspired to write this piano work in the style of the Impressionistic French composers. It comprises lyrical melodies in mostly 9/8 and 5/4 meters and sequential patterns, using predominately notes from the whole tone scales. The left hand ostinato occurs mostly throughout while the right hand melody is heard in different keys. As the piece concludes, there is a brief reprise of the waltz melody that slowly fades away. The score is clearly and carefully notated with dynamic marks, phrasing, pedal indications, suggested fingerings, and appropriate musical terms for playing. This piano solo makes a wonderful recital and encore piece that will delight audiences...ideal for both students and professionals. Duration time is about 4:30.
