Nada que ver. mercenary waltz for piano The Spanish expression nada que ver has two senses: literal and idiomatic. In its broader sense, nada que ver is just that: there is nothing to see (this is what the police usually say when they want you not to stop). But as an idiom, nada que ver implies what you are saying is absolutely unrelated and therefore you are totally wrong. Why is this waltz mercenary? Because it is very direct, traditional and does not intend to experiment with anything. In addition to the original version (for solo piano) the composer has made one for violin and piano (which can be played without major problems with flute, or with clarinet with slight adaptations). This piece is placed somewhere between classical music and new tango. Moderator Louis Barabbas wrote about Ausente for the BBC blog Fresh On The Net nr. 305 (19 November 2018), http://freshonthenet.co.uk/2018/11/faves305 Described as 'somewhere between classical music and new tango' the artist’s phrasing here is telling: somewhere rather than something. For in Juan Maria Solare’s Ausente (absent) we are certainly transported. Each angular phrase jutting up like stone columns or distended stalactites in a limey cave. The trickling thrust of its furtive intent feels somehow elemental yet focused through an urban noir prism, drops of heavy water in varying temperatures, some icicles and some steam, shards of smoky light poking around slow moving fan blades and between the rusty teeth of ancient window grills, monstrous warped shadows cast up from humble orphaned minutiae. Music as beautiful and unsettling as it is hard to dance to. The idea of dancing this piece was a surprise for me, since tango music doesn't need to be danced to (you can also just listen to it). But if you wonder how this tango would appear danced, imagine it is not called tango but contemporary ballet rooted in tango - and suddenly you find ways of dancing it... provided an open-minded choreographer is on board! If someone wants to dance this music in the style of the tango of 1920, they will have a hard time. I have no idea how (or why) I wrote this piece. It happened quite quickly and flowed from my fingers more than my head (or heart). I had an image of a man from Barcelona marching hysterically on a parade ground (1st section) and then the piece morphed into another man having an equally hilarious dance lesson on Strictly Come Dancing (2nd section) (John Seargent?) The main problem I have is packaging this number - is it a March?, Is it a Waltz?, Is it Novelty Piano? Is it Classical? It even has some Ragtime suggestions. This could be my publishers nightmare... I know? It's Super-marltz Anyway The thing is now born and off it went. (deliberate mixing of tenses).

This little waltz .was not .discovered until recently. The manuscript .was passed from the dedicatee ('dedica: alla gentile Signora Giovanna Albano Sottomano per omaggio cordiale di Nino Rota Bari 12/7/1945') to her heirs and .has remained in their possession ever .since. This is why it has not been included in Rota's catalogue of works .until now.
Thus, .it is all the more delightful that we can now publish this lively piano work for the first time and .in doing so, add another piece to Rota's popular compositions for piano.
