The harmony of this piece is based on presenting a chromatic field (the twelve notes) subdivided into three diatonic fields (of 4 notes each). Program Notes: At the Edge of the Body’s Night (2008) for piano and digital acoustics is a setting of Seven Poems by the late poet, Mark Strand. These poems intrigued me with their potent brevity and mysterious symbolism. I found in their riddle-like form a concise emotional message, ideal for creating short melodic themes and inspiring fantastic piano music. When I recorded Mark’s voice reading the poems, I knew that his recitation would be part of the compositional resources for the piece. His resonant voice, enhanced by the audio editing process, provided a powerful context for the musical interpretation of his words. The addition of a soprano voice (Ashley Parker) in the digital landscape alludes to the traditional art song setting of poems. and her siren-call voice recalls the female muse that I imagined inspired the poet in writing his words. The piano music guides the listener throughout this fantastic journey of sound and music reflecting on the meaning and character of the poems and driving the dream-like narrative forward. Performance of the digital acoustic: Each of the six movements (I & II are combined) for piano are accompanied by a digital audio landscape as part of the performance. At the beginning of each section, a cue is notated in the score to start the audio wave file. It is recommended that a high fidelity audio play back system be employed in the recital hall or performance space. The sound system could be interfaced with a laptop computer or iPad operated by the pianist using a foot pedal similarly used with iPads supporting a digital part or it could be executed during the performance by a technician. The rental of the digital acoustic files includes a Key File license from Qlab that TheComposerStudio will email to be uploaded to a PC or Mac laptop computer for the duration of the rental. The uploaded software will ensure that the files are executed during a performance with ease and accuracy. The rental agreement also includes support from TheComposerStudio.Com, LLC from the time of rental through the performance of the piece. Quite possibly the longest set of piano variations in the entire classical music literature, with the exception, perhaps, of certain sets of variations for piano by Kaikhosru Shapurgi Sorabji. This work ends with a monstrous 35-page long fugue. In the 18th century, Bach composed the Goldberg Variations (30 variations), in the 19th century Beethoven composed the Diabelli Variations (33 variations), in the 20th century Frederic Rzewski composed The People United Will Never Be Defeated (36 variations), and now, in the 21st century, Gary Noland has composed his monumental 39 Variations on an Original Theme in F Major. (There seems to be a pattern of three variations added on for each century). This is a work for adventurous first-rate pianists! Some of the variations are self-contained and may be played separate from the whole.I'm fascinated by your variations. Perhaps a marathon performance with many pianists doing several variations? This set of three pieces is well-suited for advanced students or professional performers who enjoy creating and shaping mood, atmosphere and color on the piano. They were composed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Claude Debussy’s birth. For that reason, they are based on various composing techniques and aesthetic ideas that he developed. Even so, there was no attempt to make them actually sound like Debussy’s music. In fact, while composing them I often felt like I was looking at Debussy’s techniques through the distorting lenses of music that came after him, but that he had influenced.I - Drifting Through ChangeOne sort of change in this piece comes from the interaction of two repeated rhythmic patterns of different lengths. Episodes of contrasting character then drift in and out of the piece creating more changes. The effect is as if one is floating quietly through empty space, but occasionally drifting past various objects or situations.II - Building CloudsTo me, the opening of this movement sounds like an idea from Debussy’s Nuages that has been turned inside out. Unlike Debussy’s more delicate clouds, however, the clouds of this piece grow turbulent and dramatic. III - Moonless HeathFor this movement, I imagine walking through an open untamed field on a dark moonless night and not being sure what I might be passing by. In terms of color and technique, this piece shows a more obvious relationship to Debussy’s music that the first two. It begins with a simple melody similar to that of his Bruyére, after which a Debussy-inspired ostinato gently moves the music forward. Structurally, the whole piece is an inverted palindrome so that a melody from the beginning returns in retrograde-inversion at the end, becoming a brief quote of Debussy’s music. Performance duration ca. 11 minutes.

Program note: There is a lot of time to compose when you are stuck at home during the Pandemic 2020.. This is the second work I completed under lockdown. The first one, Kindertodtenlieder for soprano and piano, I started on April 26 and it was completed on May 13th. While exercising at home, I was watching on YouTube Debussy’s Préludes Book 1 and 2, and the idea came to me that I should try my hand at writing something that is impressionistic. Why not? So I started my own set of preludes using the Debussy as my model. Each movement will take two or three notes from the original Debussy version and then I would divert and go in a complete different direction, following my gut instinct. Capricious FantasyAs per the request of pianist Michael Tsalka, this flowing, expressive and lyrical piece is based on motives from the music of Classical Bohemian composer Johann Baptist Wanhal. Motives from his Capriccio No. 3, for piano, are used as fundamental building blocks, but the style of their expression and development is radically different. Because motives from different sections or movements of Wanhal’s piece all appear in this single movement, the character and expression here is more changeable, less stable and some might even say more romantic than Wanhal’s capriccio. Technically, this piece borrows ideas of repetition and continuous flow from recent minimalist music, but the effect is more lyrical, flexible and dramatic than classic minimalism. It begins with the repetition of four chords that were derived from notes used in one of Wanhal’s melodic motives. New melodies based on that motive then enter with different phrase lengths, creating a gentle dialogue of independent voices. Eventually, a faster idea from the same capriccio is introduced, but it is first played slowly and freely before its tempo increases. The entire piece then continues unfolding as a freely flowing dialogue of moods, tempos and characters based on these three simple ideas and it culminates with fast notes and strong declarations before subsiding into a gentle ending that includes all three motives.Performance duration ca. 6 minutes.
