Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.790152 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Diamond S Music. Classical,Concert. Score. 14 pages. Diamond S Music #4269079. Published by Diamond S Music (A0.790152). Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 - 1st Movement, commonly known as Sonata Pathétique, was written in 1798 when the composer was 27 years old, and was published in 1799. It has remained one of his most celebrated compositions. Although commonly thought to be one of the few works to be named by the composer himself, it was actually named Grande sonate pathétique (to Beethoven's liking) by the publisher, who was impressed by the sonata's tragic sonorities. Prominent musicologists debate whether or not the Pathétique may have been inspired by Mozart's piano sonata K. 457, since both compositions are in C minor and have three very similar movements. The second movement, Adagio cantabile, especially, makes use of a theme remarkably similar to that of the spacious second movement of Mozart's sonata. However, Beethoven's sonata uses a unique motif line throughout, a major difference from Haydn or Mozart’s creation. This is the original Beethoven arrangement of this sonata., commonly known as Sonata Pathétique, was written in 1798 when the composer was 27 years old, and was published in 1799. Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1368471 By Jose Valladares. By Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Jose Valladares. 19th Century. Score. 9 pages. Circlesquare Music #952818. Published by Circlesquare Music (A0.1368471). The Sonatina in F Major, Anh. 5, No. 2 is often attributed to Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the most celebrated composers in Western music history. However, it's important to note that the authenticity of this piece as a work by Beethoven has been questioned by musicologists. The Anh. in the title stands for Anhang, which means appendix in German and refers to a cataloguing system used for works that are either of doubtful authenticity or definitively known not to be composed by Beethoven. Despite this, the piece remains popular among students and teachers for its pedagogical value.Assuming the piece is studied as part of Beethoven's attributed works, here are some key aspects you might expect from the Sonatina in F Major, Anh. 5, No. 2:Sonatina Form: The sonatina is a simplified version of the sonata, generally shorter and less complex, making it suitable for early intermediate students. It usually consists of two or three movements, with the first often following a sonata-allegro structure but in a more condensed form.Key of F Major: The key of F Major tends to have a bright and cheerful character. In a sonatina, this key would lend the piece an uplifting and pleasant quality, making it enjoyable for both performers and listeners.Classical Style Characteristics: Even though the authenticity is in question, pieces attributed to Beethoven typically showcase characteristics of the Classical period, such as clarity in structure, balanced phrasing, and harmonic exploration. The Sonatina in F Major would likely reflect these elements.Technical and Musical Aspects: Sonatinas provide an excellent opportunity for students to develop fundamental skills such as phrasing, articulation, and dynamic contrast. This particular sonatina in F Major would probably include lyrical melodies, clear textures, and typical Classical period accompaniment patterns.Pedagogical Value: Given its approachable difficulty level, the Sonatina in F Major, Anh. 5, No. 2 serves as an excellent teaching piece for introducing young or early intermediate students to the sonata form and Classical style playing.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1281191 Composed by Wanda Landowska. Arranged by Zellev. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Folk,New Age. Score. 7 pages. Zellev Music #872533. Published by Zellev Music (A0.1281191). Key Signature: Fâ?¯ minorTime Signature: 3/4Tempo: Allegro vivace (143)Difficulty: AdvancedWanda Landowska (July 5, 1879 - August 16, 1959) was a Polish harpsichordist and composer who led the revival of the popularity of the harpsichord in the early 1900s. She was one of the earliest advocates and scholars on historically informed performance practices, and she made the first-ever recording of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations on the harpsichord.Landowska was born in Warsaw in 1879 and started playing the piano when she was four years old. As a child, she studied with Jan KleczyÅ?ski and then Aleksander Michalowski. Kleczynski noticed in her lessons that she had an affinity for older Baroque music, and he didn't want to impose his sensibilities onto the already apparent musical prodigy. Consequently, her mother decided that Kleczynski was too lenient of a teacher and sent her to study with the stricter Michalowski, who was a Chopin specialist. When she was 16 years old, Landowska moved to Berlin to study composition with Heinrich Urban, but was discouraged by the rigid curriculum. However, while in Berlin she composed songs and orchestral works, and she met her future husband, Henry Lew. In 1900, the young couple moved to Paris and got married. There she became associated with the Schola Cantorum, and was introduced to Vincent D'Indy, Albert Schweitzer, and other prominent performers and musicologists of the era.Throughout the next ten years, Landowska toured Europe and Russia, and dedicated herself to researching the authentic performance practices of older music. Her husband assisted her in this research, and they often utilized libraries that they encountered while touring. She concluded that it's more appropriate to play Baroque keyboard music on the harpsichord rather than on the piano. By 1909, Landowska and her husband published the book Musique Ancienne, which was the culmination of all of their research regarding the performance practices of Baroque music. She also started teaching harpsichord classes in 1913 at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin.Ten years later, Landowska made her debut in the United States, performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Stokowski. Also in 1923, she performed in the world premiere of Manuel de Falla's El retablo de maese Pedro, where she met Francis Poulenc and asked him to write a harpsichord concerto for her. She also commissioned a concerto from Falla in 1925, which would prove to be a modern masterpiece. In 1929, Landowska performed the premiere of Poulenc's Concert champêtre in Paris. By this time, she had settled in a town north of Paris, and was teaching from her school L'Ã?cole de Musique Ancienne, which she established in 1925. She offered private and group courses and an annual summer concert series that was very popular. Landowska taught and performed in this capacity until 1940, when she had to abandon the school, her extensive library, and her home because of World War II. With the assistance of her student Denise Restout, she escaped to Portugal and then sailed to the United States, and eventually settled in Lakeville, Connecticut. She continued to perform and teach in the U.S., and at the age of 70 she recorded the complete Well-Tempered Clavier, which was highly acclaimed. Landowska was 80 years old when she passed away in Lakeville in 1959.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1427909 Composed by David Neff. Christian,Lent,Religious,Sacred,Spiritual. Score. 4 pages. David Neff #1008654. Published by David Neff (A0.1427909). This piano prelude on a familiar African-American tune tries to capture the good news that there is indeed healing for sick souls. While it is appropriate at any time of year, it is especially well-suited to the season of Lent. The spiritual responds to the plaintive question of the weeping biblical prophet Jeremiah. In the face of the spirit sickness of his people, Jeremiah cried out, “Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?” This song answers in the affirmative: “There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.”Thus Jeremiah’s dismal view is met with hope and reassurance. The song was first collected by the African-American musicologist Frederick J. Work (1907) but there are documented examples of the song’s precursors as early as 1859.Play this piece with tenderness and joy.

Fantasia Sonata in D Major for piano solo - Ludwig van Beethoven (Unv 12 / deest 45) - Reconstructio

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.933520 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, Cees Nieuwenhuizen. Classical. Score. 48 pages. Upstream Music #482215. Published by Upstream Music (A0.933520). There are many more unfinished than completed compositions of Beethoven that have been preserved. ln these fragments one sees ideas for individual works. A large number of sketchbooks and sketches from the composer were preserved and are housed in libraries and private collections all over the globe. Some sketches are no more than brief experiments or short elaborated ideas, but there are also fragments preserved that nearly give us a complete picture of a composition. In the so-called Kafka sketchbook, which was published in 1970 in London, approximately 500 fragments of manuscripts were bundled that stem from 1786 - 1799. The Fantasia Sonata in D (deest 45) for piano forte in three parts, was hidden in the archives since 1792. This sonata of the young Beethoven, with striking similarities to the Moonlight sonata and the Pastorale has never been performed on stage. Young pianotalent Martin Oei played it for the first time in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, October 21st, 2012. The large, over 1100 bars comprising torso now known as Fantasia Sonata in D from 1792, cannot be called a sketch anymore, although Beethoven has not completed the work and used many ideas in other, later works. The reconstruction of the sketches was done by the Dutch Beethoven musicologist and composer Cees Nieuwenhuizen. The piece was probably written in Bonn, three years before he started to write his first official piano sonata of a series of 32 sonatas. In November 1792 Beethoven went from Bonn to Vienna to study with the famous composer Joseph Haydn (1732–1809). Beethoven rapidly proceeded to make his mark as a brilliant keyboard performer and as a gifted young composer with a number of works to his credit. In 1795 his first mature published works appeared, and his career was officially launched. Striking harmonies The re-using of previously drafted material is quite common in Beethoven's works. Apparently the material wasn't yet ripe enough at the time of its origination, or perhaps Beethoven changed his mind with regards to the new composition. This could very well be so regarding the torso from Kafka’s sketchbook that we now call the Piano Fantasia sonata in D. This piece contains 1100 bars of music, not taking into account the alternative bars. The piece is composed by Beethoven in 1792 - 1793 and was set up as a tripartite sonata in D with remarkable abnormalities in terms of form and content. There are striking harmonies that cannot be found in other works composed in that same period. It’s possible that the composer didn’t have the courage to publish it or that indeed the time was not yet ripe for it. Finally the composer let the draft go and never came back to it. Or did he? Thematic similarities We find phrases in several later works that share similarities with ideas and themes from Fantasia sonata in D. The first part of Fantasia sonata has the same theme as the trio of the third movement of Symphony no. 7 (in A Major Opus 92). Even the key and also the rhythm in 3/4 time are the same. This cannot be a coincidence. Similar mood and thematic parallels can be found in the Pastorale, the Sonata for piano no. 15 (Opus 28): it is striking that this piece is also composed in D and in 3/4 time. We find similar dramatic expression in the Sonata for piano no. I 7 in d minor Opus 31 no. 2. The second movement of the Fantasia sonata nearly has the same theme as the second movement of the Sonata for piano no. 23 in minor (the Appassionato Opus 57). Martin Oei, Daiel Wayenberg, Cees Nieuwenhuizen at The World Premiere in The Concertgebouw Beethoven begins the third movement of the Fantasia sonata with the main theme of the first movement, but now in e minor. lts appearance in minor is an entirely new idea. Nevertheless Beethoven doesn't elaborate the idea any further because it disappears after 29 bars. Now a new agitated theme starts in d minor, which was announced in the first movement, but now reappears in its complete.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.972645 Composed by James Siddons. Arranged by James Siddons Music and Writings. 20th Century,Concert,Folk,Gospel,Jazz. Score. 19 pages. James Siddons Music and Writings #4350561. Published by James Siddons Music and Writings (A0.972645). About the Sonata Hymnica Series Program Note Composer James Siddons draws on the ethos of American rural hymns and spirituals to create evocations of the deeper, larger meaning of familiar church melodies. These sonatas for piano solo explore these deeper meanings in a variety of contemporary musical influences, while keeping in mind the acoustics of small rural churches of the late nineteenth century, with wooden floors and walls, high ceilings, and dimensions determined by local builders who knew how to shape a room for excellent acoustics in an age of no electricity and no microphones. These sonatas are but partly about the specific melodies and words, and mostly about their meaning in spiritual contemplation . . . and the piano, resonating, reverberant, sometimes whispering---as a sacred harp. Although these sonatas have no specific titles, the first sonata may be thought of as the Prayer Sonata, the second as the Travel Sonata, as in a spiritual journey, and the third sonata is about our greatest fear, that of being alone and without God. Performance Note The pianist must keep in mind that these sonatas are about playing the piano as much as playing a composition. Musical effects characteristic of the piano and descriptive of the memory in American culture are the substances of these piano solos. Touch is important: in many places, several dynamics are called for on the same beat. All three pedals on an American piano (damper, sostenuto, and sustain) are needed. The orchestral and cinematic structure of this music requires extensive use of three staffs, which may consist of two treble and one bass staff, or one treble and two bass staffs. In basic grand-staff passages, the two staffs may both be treble or both bass. The musical influences in these sonatas include religious song in rural America, the chromaticism and Expressionism of Arnold Schoenberg and his followers, and the tone colors of the music of Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu.DurationsSonata Hymnica No. 1 --- 15 minutes.Sonata Hymnica No. 2 --- 11 minutes. Sonata Hymnica No. 3 --- 9 minutes. About the Composer Composer, musicologist, and pianist James Siddons studied composition with Dika Newlin, a protégé of Arnold Schoenberg, and electronic music with Merrill Ellis, founder of the electronic music program at the University of North Texas, where he also earned a PhD in musicology. After a year at the University of London, where he studied musical analysis at King’s College and electronic music at Goldsmiths’ College, Siddons spent two years in Japan as a research scholar at Tokyo University of Arts, participating in the Ethnomusicology Seminar of Fumio Koizumi. Siddons has also studied theology and liturgy at the Duke University Divinity School. In addition to books and articles on contemporary music and music in Japan, Siddons was written compositions in many genres. Piano Solo - Digital Download SKU: A0.1178488 Composed by Julián De La Chica. Classical,Contemporary,Film/TV. Score. 25 pages. Vagabundo Music Publishing #778453. Published by Vagabundo Music Publishing (A0.1178488). The current pianistic postminimalism draws heavily from Ambient music, this is how it tries to build surfaces. We hear it in popular figures such as Max Richter, Hania Arani, Olafur Arnalds or Nils Frahm. In the Silencios Fatuos (2021) by Colombian composer Julián De La Chica, this search seems to find threads that weave with the phosphorescent and radioactive shadows left by the twentieth century, and to which we return when listening to the flashes of sonorities that refer us to Ryuichi Sakamoto or David Sylvian. In previous productions, such as the  Preludes Op. 8, and his Voyeuristic Images Op. 10, De La Chica's pianism shows a constant exploration and research. The composer-pianist urges within the parameters of the new simplicity, challenging himself in a kind of minimal eroticism. In Silencios fatuos the artist gradually sheds his skins, confronting the very fatuity of postminimalism. And in this way, he seems to sprout abstaining from any violent rebellion, in a kind of superfluity, allowing the passage of time, building surfaces with curved lines that twist on themselves without noise, without groans, contemplating the absurd with an unsettling serenity.— Susan Campos-Fonseca, PhDMusicologist & composer

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.972635 Composed by James Siddons. 20th Century,Contemporary,Ragtime,Standards. Score. 10 pages. James Siddons Music and Writings #3022927. Published by James Siddons Music and Writings (A0.972635). These seven short pieces were composed in the early months of 1976 as imitations of some of the composers and musical styles of the early twentieth century. They were never performed or published at the time. They are useful as didactic studies for student pianists. The seven pieces areI. Intonatione In the Whole-Tone ScaleII. Prélude and Nocturne in ModesIII. An Impression of ImpressionismIV. An Imitation of Roy HarrisV. Adding Chord-Tones While Shifting MetersVI. Ragtime BitonalityVII. Diatonic Waltz Program Notes: The Intonatione In the Whole-Tone Scale recalls the Renaissance Italian musical form that evolved into the prèlude in later organ music, as well as the use of Italian forms in the atonal music of Arnold Schoenberg, and some neo-Baroque composers of the twentieth century. In contrast, the whole-tone scale is reminiscent of generally tonal composers, including Debussy. The Martial Prèlude and Nocturne in Modes recalls the many pre-twentieth century pairings of preludes with fugues and other forms. The pairing with a nocturne evokes an air of Romanticism. The Martial Prèlude is a march-like fanfare, in Lydian mode on C. The Chopinesque Nocturne is in Phrygian mode, on E flat. An Impression of Impressionism evokes some of Debussy’s Preludes pour Piano, including a suggestive title at the bottom of the page, as Debussy himself did. For the young pianist aiming to master the works of Debussy, the arpeggio patterns, block chords, and sequential motives will prove helpful as introductory exercises. An Imitation of Roy Harris was inspired by the occasion in 1976 when James Siddons heard Roy Harris speaking in person about his compositions. Siddons was impressed by Harris’ youth in Oklahoma, and how the solidity of American rural life shaped Harris’ symphonic music. When taking questions at the end of the lecture, a young composer asked Harris about his creative methods when composing music. Well, Harris responded, You don’t pull up a potato just to see if its growing. Adding Chord-Tones While Shifting Meters is a technical exercise that is nonetheless fun to listen to, and fun to play. A student pianist should be asked to analyze the harmony in this piece, and to describe what shifts are taking place when the musical meter (as well as phrasing and rhythm patterns) change. The echoes of Stravinsky and Bartók should be apparent to the listener and pianist. Ragtime was not regarded as art music of the same caliber as Stravinsky and Schoenberg, or even Copland and Gershwin, until the 1970s. The inclusion of ragtime in these seven pieces would not have been accepted by composers of the early twentieth century, Stravinsky excepted. Ragtime Bitonality explores how such piano music might have sounded had major composers of the 1900-1920 era taken an interest in its march-like vitality. There is even a touch of atonality! In contrast to the powerful rhythms and juxtaposed tonal relations in much early twentieth-century music, there were works by many composers that continued familiar melodic patterns and balanced forms, offering musical relief in a turbulent era in music history. The Diatonic Waltz is offered here as a quiet, peaceful conclusion to our tour of musical styles in classical music of a century ago. About the Composer: James Siddons is a composer and pianist as well as musicologist. His research guide to the music of Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu was published in 2001. Easy Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.596616 Composed by Juan MarÃa Solare. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score. 5 pages. Juan Maria Solare #6211543. Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.596616). Mientras dormÃas (Spanish for While You Were Sleeping) is a simple neoclassical and postmodern lullaby, composed (in its original version) for solo piano. (To say of a lullaby that it is simple is quite foreseeable: the striking thing would be a complex lullaby.)The unspoken interlocutor, the you alluded to, can be anyone: son, lover, pet ... but also a sleeping audience whom you try to shake with your harangue, informing them of what they have just lost, of what happened while they were distracted.Technically, it is a simple deconstruction or recontextualization of the famous Wiegenlied by Johannes Brahms. Hence the categorization of postmodern, due to the use of the camouflaged quotation as an essential structuring device (although a well-prepared musicologist should better not read this).Character: gentle andante (walking). Piece composed in Bremen (Germany), November 17 and 18, 2020. Duration: approximately 3:45. International Standard Musical Work Code (ISWC): T-301.822.636-9
