Key Signature: G majorTime Signature: 3/4Tempo: Vivace, ma ritmico (vivace, considerably, 148bpm)Difficulty: IntermediateWilliam Alwyn (1905-1985) Fantasy Waltzes: No. 8 in G Major The Fantasy Waltzes is a suite of eleven piano pieces composed in London between June 1954 and April 1955 and is arguably one of Alwyn’s finest works for piano solo. Alwyn uses the basic three-four waltz rhythm with a great variety of style, and much of the music has that of a romantic approach, although here and there are nods to the composer’s earlier neo-classical style. The idea for the Fantasy Waltzes originated while Alwyn was on holiday in Norway after a visit to Grieg’s lakeside home. Although conceived as a continuous cycle, the suite does divide into two parts, Nos. 1-6 and Nos. 7-11, which encompass many moods from happy to sad, to mysterious and solemn, with the eighth waltz being one of the most attractive of the set. The Fantasy Waltzes are dedicated to the New Zealand pianist Richard Farrell, who gave the first performance of the work in a BBC broadcast on 2nd June 1957. Less than a year later, Farrell’s promising career as a concert pianist was cut tragically short after being killed in a car accident. Alwyn admired Farrell’s playing greatly and dedicated the fifth of his Twelve Preludes for piano to Farrell’s memory.

Sonata for Piano No. 6 Meditation is in two movements. The two movements are titled River's Flow and Prayer. The shorter first movement is both lyrical and motivic using some added tone harmony and the full expanse of the keyboard. The reference to the opening main idea played very softly at the end of the movement creates a sense of return to the movement's beginnings. The gentle opening of the second movement begins with a chant-like melody played in the lower register of the instrument. The movement grows from this point drawing its musical material from the opening melody and building to the climactic section of the work. Three staves are used to notate this section of the movement with the full expanse of the keyboard again being explored. Like the first movement, the second movement ends softly. However, the second movement ends with every note in the D natural minor scale (or D Aeolian mode) sounding together, creating a darker ending and a contrast to the conclusion of the first movement. Both movements feature expressive playing and mostly slow tempos and are intended to convey the “Meditation†part of the title by painting a picture of both introspection and transcendence.

This is the second Prelude from my first set of 24 Preludes for Solo Piano. Attention to dynamic contrast is important in this simple march-like piece as a gradual shift from the quietest to loudest dynamic should be heard each time the theme is heard. No expense should be spared in the final iteration of the theme in terms of dynamics and while there is a metronome marking at the start it is a guideline, the piece should be neither fast nor slow but with a simple adherence to the idea of the 'martellato' direction. This piece is rather simple except for the accel. section at the end which requires some finesse, however for a beginner pianist it should not be too much of a challenge. Performance time should be roughly 2 minutes.

It is in concert G major and has a lydian influence throughout in the harmonies. The piece loosely touches on multiple keys with lots of quavers movement to keep the idea of flowing thoughts, its ending is surprisingly on the chord of the 4th- again ending on the lydian note! The full score is 6 pages and it is just over 5 minutes 30 in length. Intermediate level but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability.

This three-movement Romantic sonata was composed in 1987 and revised in 2016. The idea of sonata-allegro structure, which in a classical sonata would apply to the first movement, is distributed across all three movements of this work: The first two movements serve as exposition, and their thematic materials are then developed and recapitulated in the third movement. In the coda all the themes are woven together in a magnificent contrapuntal tapestry. This sonata is designed to be performed as a whole, but the lyrical second movement is also effective when performed independently.

Menu is a phonetic distortion of Minuet. My piece is a jazz arrangement of the famous Minuet in G from the Anna Magdalena Notebook. The idea of making jazz arrangements of certain classical pieces, while not a new concept, occurred to me many years ago and this small work is the initial result. Fusing a well-known work with an entirely different style is a perfect amalgam of old and new.

Yet, this whole idea of music of the night did not originate with him, but with John Field. Clementi's sorely-tried apprentice and protege', and a confirmed alcoholic, moved from London and Clementi's captivity to spend his adulthood, short as it was, in Moscow, of all places. It was there he began to write his long series of romantic, ( small R? ) pieces, with simple vocalistic melodies, over an arpeggiated left-hand bass. This piece marks the beginning of the genre, and, as such, warrants the attention of everyone who admires Chopin's works. Our setting here uses chord symbols for every LH arpeggio, so that the player can get used to harmonic identification as the primary means of seeing and hearing the LH. All the ornamentation is written out, for stylistic clarity. As with so much classical music, a slow pace brings out lingering subtleties, while a faster one can create movement and excitement, if one has the technique! MBB .

Using fugal technique, I began to develop a cyclical idea of contrapuntal development coupled with meditative sections that present the themes/motives to be worked with. After composing a few of these, I noticed a great deal of divergence from my intended concept of the form. The results are awesome though -and I think this series of piano works is definitely going somewhere!

The prelude was not a major form in the Classical period, so I have tried to write a prelude, in an unusual key, that uses some of the characteristic musical elements of the time, and has a highly concentrated sonata-form as its structure, while still keeping to the single-idea concept of a true prelude. Syncopation and dotted rhythms throughout. Gb rather than F# so the modulation is to Bb minor, and not A# minor! Ouch... The tempo is sprightly, without being rushed or frantic. Approximate time is 2 mins, 15-30 secs. The complete set of 24 preludes is being made available as single titles here on www.SheetMusicPlus.com They cover every style, from medieval modality through Baroque, Classsical, early and Late Romanticism, into Impressionism, modernism and abstraction. This set of music for piano is based my Twenty Etudes For Guitar. The guitar and the piano are certainly cousins so I believe the essence of works for one instrument can be expressed on the other, in either direction. While these pieces may in fact work as etudes for piano I have purposefully renamed them. Whether or not they work as etudes I will leave up to each individual pianist and piano teacher the extent of their didactic usefulness. Ultimately though all music can be used for study and my wish is these pieces can be used for study and performance. They are relatively brief and ideally played in sets, the number and selections being determined by the performer. Guitarist Neal Fitzpatrick has a B.M. from the Hartt School where he studied with Alan Spriestersbach and his M.M. from The Yale School of Music where he studied with Benjamin Verdery. He also studied extensively with Sharon Isbin and Sal Salvador. Based in Connecticut, he is active as a soloist and in the chamber music scene.
