Friends shouldn't just hang out in fair weather, so here is All Weather Friends, a gentle swing waltz ideal for established intermediate players at about the Grade 4-5 standard (ABRSM).The melody and accompaniment is based upon a classic jazz waltz rhythm, so to get into the feel of this piece, you may find it useful to first practice clapping this rhythm:Remember that the quaver eighth notes are swung.The trick with this piece is to let the melody sing out above the jazz waltz accompaniment, so keep an ear on the melody at all times.In bar 21, the semiquaver 16th notes can be played a little faster than written, which will create more of a 'turn' ornament. Have a listen to the performance recording clip (above) at about halfway through to get the idea.This jazz waltz piano sheet music provides excellent practice for working on phrasing and sustain pedal technique. Occasionally, you may find a couple of hand position changes that risk disrupting the flow of the melodic phrase. In these instances, try a touch of sustain pedal to smooth out the transition. An example of this can be found in bar 31.After the repeated opening melody, the middle section moves into the key of G minor, featuring a rising arpeggio-based accompaniment with sustain pedal. There is a lot of quaver eighth-note movement in this section, so be sure to keep this rhythm smoothly swinging in the usual triplet manner:This middle section reaches a crescendo at bar 37 with a rippling chord effect between both hands. Try experimenting with different ways of splitting up these chords - you could ripple up from the left hand to the right hand, or try rippling both hands at the same time. Stick with whatever sounds good to you!After a poco rall the original melody returns via a D.C. al Coda. There are 3 pieces for each of the four seasons. The first piece in each season is at the mid to late elementary level, the second piece is at the early intermediate level and the third piece is at the intermediate level. The Glistening Woodland Waltz, with lyrics, for the winter season, is in 3/4 time, and uses a broken C chord waltz pattern in the left hand bass clef part. The right hand uses many skips and finger stretches to reach the notes that step outside of five finger positions. Other titles available in this set entitled Something for Every Season are: Spring Time Minuet, Fishing in the Brook, April Showers and May Flowers, Trampoline Tango, Reflection on the Water, Lazy Days, Harvest Time Minuet, Family Gathering, Crunchy Leaves, Winter Fun Suite, and The Blizzard.

Alwyn uses the basic three-four waltz rhythm with a great variety of style, and much of the music has that of a romantic approach, although here and there are nods to the composer’s earlier neo-classical style. The idea for the Fantasy Waltzes originated while Alwyn was on holiday in Norway after a visit to Grieg’s lakeside home. Although conceived as a continuous cycle, the suite does divide into two parts, Nos. 1-6 and Nos. 7-11, which encompass many moods from happy to sad, to mysterious and solemn, with the eighth waltz being one of the most attractive of the set. The Fantasy Waltzes are dedicated to the New Zealand pianist Richard Farrell, who gave the first performance of the work in a BBC broadcast on 2nd June 1957. Less than a year later, Farrell’s promising career as a concert pianist was cut tragically short after being killed in a car accident. Alwyn admired Farrell’s playing greatly and dedicated the fifth of his Twelve Preludes for piano to Farrell’s memory.

The A sections are nearly identical, only the measure before the last is slightly different.The counting is easy as the LH keeps the beat most of the time. Note-reading could be challenging for a pianist who has not much experience with chromaticism and ledger lines. The A section is in G minor and features mostly triplets in the RH with oom-pa-pa accompaniment in the LH. Even though it feels and sounds busy and energetic, it still needs to gently sway, with some judicious give and take in the tempo.The middle section is in G major and moves the melody into the LH. The LH melody is mostly quarter notes, and the RH accompaniment is either quarter or eighth notes which makes for a much calmer feeling.This waltz would best suit a pianist who has experience with either RH passage work or LH waltz accompaniment with wide leaps, or both. Short, two-page Etude to practice chromatic scale patterns. The counting is easy as the LH provides the beat. The note-reading could be challenging for someone new to chromatic scales. However, there are no sharps or flats in the key signature which instantly eliminates one possible challenge. Technically it is not as difficult as it may seem at first as most of the triplet chromatic scale patterns are less than a measure long, providing frequent chances for the RH to rest or at least breathe. However, like with any passage work, it is important to not press / push into the keys. While the harmony of the first two lines is very traditional, using chord progressions that an (early) intermediate pianist would be familiar with, from the 3rd line on there are frequent modulations and surprise key changes which may pose a challenge for a pianist who has not as much experience with that. Musical / interpretation challenges could be to keep it light, to shape the many short melodic patterns, and to play with a smile.

The waltz was written sometime between 1843 and 1848, but was not published until 1860, after the composer's death. The first theme of the piece uses a simple but effective melody, conveying a sad portrait, with decorative ornaments used throughout. The second theme is more interesting and lively, although it still has a certain sadness. About halfway through the piece, there is a modulation into A major, featuring a happy and joyful melody. The piece concludes with the main theme, followed by a short coda. The Level is Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate and the duration is approximately 2.01 minutes. Tempo for the first section should be around 80-100 BPM, but you can go faster if you would like, and the middle section should be about 50% faster. In the last section, take very heavy rubato.
