Published by Mazuk Music (A0.933991). Features for Carillon and Brass is a two movement work to highlight carillons and brass instruments. Carillons, also known as bell towers, is a keyboard instrument housed in many church towers or towers in municipal buildings. The actual sound is created by hammers hitting several large bronze bells. These bells can weigh up to 100 tons. Additionally, their distinct shape gives them a distinct sound. The first movement, Fanfare, combines many of the common associations of carillons and brass. The carillon opens on a repeated note, which is reminiscent of bell towers signaling the hour. And brass instruments are commonly associated with fanfares, especially with fast, repeated notes. The minimalist style of this movement perfectly suites these associations. The second movement features a more lyrical side of both the carillon and brass. The entire movement is based on Dies Irae, a Gregorian Chant from the 1200s. While the entire chant is presented at various points, it is only done so in fragments. I listened for several minutes and amazingly never grew tired of the old tune. Between the percussive nature of the instrument and the unique intervals the out-of-tune comb robotically produced, I could not help but imagine what the tune would sound like when played by the large, rotating drum found on so many carillons. I remember visiting Belgium and seeing these extremely large automatic-playing drums. They resembled so much, on a larger scale, the music boxes I had been so intrigued by since I was a child. The human desire for and fascination in automatic music has long been a part of our musical tradition. While this dream has long since been achieved, these short etudes celebrate the bond between two past efforts to make this fascination a reality: the music box and the carillon.”Adam Lenhart, 2024Performance Notes These short etudes are written to be practiced and performed on any octave of your instrument. You may find certain etudes are even more effective when displaced, depending on the timbre of the carillon in question. Repeats may be executed indefinitely; upon repeating, you may choose to transpose to one octave higher/lower if desired. Let these short pieces provide a foundation to improvise upon, or as an exercise in ornamentation. After a final repeat or variation, some etudes provide a final bar or chord. Titles that do not should treat the repeat as a double bar line.

While most of us no longer live within earshot of bells, many will find a catchy and simple melody still wakes us up in the morning, reminds us to go to that meeting we forgot about, or even just helps us to do day-to-day tasks. As an avid alarm-user myself, I find music assisting me with punctuality just as it has for my ancestors. I wanted to create a piece commemorating this bond between music and time, inspired by both traditional carillon melodies, as well as modern day ringtones. My piece Musical Clock contains movements for both beginners and intermediate players. This composition was first premiered by carillonist Adam Lenhart at the 53 bell Charles Baird Carillon in Ann Arbor, Michigan.------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

With cascading seventh chords and a hymn-like melody, Twilight reflects a peaceful evening as the last sunlight fades into a star-studded night sky. Storm opens with swirling fourths and a dramatic melody in the bass. The whirling winds of the trebles are frequently broken by musical thunder in the bass and an ascending lightning motif-the storm lulls and surges, reaching a rapid and dramatic finale. Scott R. Hummel is a composer and musician from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Scott holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Music in Audio and Music Production from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania. He has performance experience in keyboard instruments, choral music, and percussion. His introduction to the carillon came through listening to the 62-bell instrument housed in the Chimes Tower at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Scott also serves as an instructor for the North American Carillon School where he teaches music theory. In addition to carillon, Scott has written for various other mediums, including choir, pipe organ, and percussion. His involvement in the music industry extends beyond composition and performance to audio engineering and lighting design. Scott continues to compose and arrange new works for carillon.
