Winner of the 2019 SMP Press Contemporary Composition award, Wu Xing - Sonata for Five Elements (5 movements, 15 min. 30 sec) was composed by Jeffrey Hoover for Yusheng Li, who initiated the first professional university saxophone degree in China. A work for alto saxophone and piano, Wu Xing reflects a fusion of American and Chinese musical aesthetics and compositional techniques. Each movement represents an element in the traditional Wu Xing generative cycle. Musical elements of one movement carry into the next, in the same way these traditional Chinese elements evolve into the next: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The fourth movement, Metal, is for unaccompanied saxophone, and includes extended techniques including microtones, multiphonics, and altered tone colors. As with other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, Hoover has also created a series of paintings that visually interpret the music: Dancing in the Trees, The Ancient Lance, The Dragon's Creation, Temple Bells and Swords, and Life of the Earth. In the way the music is a fusion of American and Chines techniques, the paintings incorporate the Wu Xing philosophy approach. Images of the paintings may be projected during performance and are available directly from the composer.Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as and .Sc. from Ball State University. His career in higher education has included both faculty and arts administration appointments. This is a work ideal for both, professional performers as well as students of the year before College level (ie. 17 years old)In the past, I had the chance to experience how performing with a musician who is also your personal partner (wife, girlfriend, etc.) can ease the process of merging together, enhancing the performance as if it were by a single musician rather than two separate individuals. So, when I was asked to write a piece for a duo in such circumstances, like the Rose-Gibbs Duo, I saw it as a great opportunity to explore the possibilities of blending, fusing, and merging musical content, sound, and other parameters into a cohesive whole.Therefore, this work explores the concept of musical discourse produced by the interaction of both instruments, which often have to align their accents, timbre, or dynamics to become one entity; as if melting together, as if two solids became liquid and fused to form a new alloy. This work was composed for and premiered by Dariusz Samol at The Festival of New Music in Szamotuly, Poland in 2004. The American premiere was given by Joe Murphy at Mansfield University in 2005. The opening movement uses a rhythmic first theme followed by a lyrical second theme that has a jazz flavor over a walking bass line. The development section uses motives from the first theme only and the recapitulation states the themes in reverse order. The second movement alternates between a dramatic statement and a lyrical melody with lush harmony. The last movement is in a modified rondo form with a lot of rhythmic drive and chromaticism.

Ruby and Steel (duration 7 min.) is a fantasy work for alto saxophone and piano, reflecting on the physical qualities and contrasts between an unlikely pairing of materials – nature's precious gemstone ruby and the manmade material steel. The ideas of the red glow of molten steel and the red light of ruby are held in common. Establishing a modern yet Romantic atmosphere, an extended piano solo opens the work. The music is developed through a thematic transformation process: gestures of earlier music reappears as transformations of its previous selves. The interaction (both musical dialogue and subsequent agreement) between piano and saxophone is a prominent characteristic, along with ebb-and-flow of tempo. As with several other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, there is an abstract painting–Ruby and Steel–created by Hoover as a visual interpretation of the musicJeffrey Hoover's work– music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra –has received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. Fantasie Variation on Mazurek Dabrowskiego was commissioned in 2010 by David Wozniak. Wozniak suggested using the Polish National Anthem as the basis of a composition that can serve as a fiery opener to a concert. After a short introduction, the anthem is stated using a repetitive rhythmic motif in the piano. Variation one is a minor variant that has a chromatic obligato in the saxophone on the repeat. After a two measure interlude in 4/4 that breaks up the 3/4 meter of the mazurka, Variation two begins. This variation uses motives from the anthem to create a new saxophone melody. Variation three changes meter often and is more technical and angular. A repeat of the minor variant brings the first fast section to a close. After a transition to a slower tempo, a mysterious variation with sudden outbursts occurs. It uses a lot of feminine endings that are characteristic of some Polish music. The tempo slows once again before variation seven which is a lyrical and romantic treatment of motives from the anthem. The final fast section begins with a rhythmic 5/8 variation that changes to 6/8 for the second part of the anthem’s structure. An ornamental version of the anthem with the mazurka rhythm returns at the end before a rousing coda brings the work to a close. This composition is recorded by David Wozniak and Krista Wallace-Boaz on the Emeritus label American Fusion CD.

This work was composed for David and Dorinne Bilger. It was first recorded by the Bilger Duo on their album The Bilger Duo Plays Recital Favorites. As the title implies, this composition is a dialogue between the two instruments, first tender and intimate and then more animated. A return to intimacy returns in the middle with new material and at the end with a recapitulation of the opening ideas. It was recorded again on compact disc by the Swiss Duo Dilemme in 1996 and has been re-released in 2000 on the AUR label as part of their Millenium Tribute to Adolphe Sax series.
