Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.551493 Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Halloween,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 62 pages. Jmsgu3 #5306287. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.551493). 1. Morning Mood, 2. Ase's Death, 3. Anitra's Dance, 4. In the Hall of the Mountain KingGrieg BackgroundIn the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.LegacyGrieg is celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.Holberg Suite and Misc. SummaryIt must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534527). It was in the process of preparing the publication of the works of Demersseman and of Ali Ben Sou Alle that suggested to me the idea of the typical 19th century practice of the Fantasy and Variations on well-known themes. The saxophone lends itself perfectly for this stylistic exercise. I therefore chose to write for this instrument, which the piano supports seriously. My republican roots (in the French sense) suggested that I set several revolutionary songs from 1789. I therefore chose the emblematic “ Ah ça ira ! â€, after having seen the famous sequence of “Si Versailles l’était conté†where Piaf sings this song hanging of the grill of the Palace of Versailles, in the superbe version by Jean Françaix.I added at the end “ La Carmagnole †and the famous “ Il pleut bergère †a foreshadowing of the destiny of Marie-Antoinette who is said to have enjoyed singing this air. One will find, a bit hidden, a short citation of a work for organ by Bach. This isn’t a pastiche but rather a sort of modern update to this form in respecting its codes, its forms of this type of work which disappeared temporarily due to forced musical austerity.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.971650 Composed by Jeffrey Hoover. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and part. 25 pages. Musicart Publications #4628067. Published by Musicart Publications (A0.971650). Ruby and Steel (duration 7 min.) is a fantasy work for alto saxophone and piano, reflecting on the physical qualities and contrasts between an unlikely pairing of materials – nature's precious gemstone ruby and the manmade material steel. The ideas of the red glow of molten steel and the red light of ruby are held in common. Establishing a modern yet Romantic atmosphere, an extended piano solo opens the work. The music is developed through a thematic transformation process: gestures of earlier music reappears as transformations of its previous selves. The interaction (both musical dialogue and subsequent agreement) between piano and saxophone is a prominent characteristic, along with ebb-and-flow of tempo. As with several other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, there is an abstract painting–Ruby and Steel–created by Hoover as a visual interpretation of the musicJeffrey Hoover's work– music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra –has received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Whether making interdisciplinary works, or traditional stand-alone sonic or visual art, Hoover shapes his work through inner vision and practical experience. Jeffrey Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.Jeffrey Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as a M.M. and Bch.Sc. from Ball State University. His career in higher education has included both music faculty and arts administrative appointments.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.549443 Composed by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 15 pages. Jmsgu3 #3494751. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549443). Score: 10 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 3 pages. Duration: 4:25. Not difficult, but requires sensitivity & dynamic control. Suitable for recitals, church meditations, or school programs. School Years First of all, Sullivan attended music school at the Royal Academy of Music. Because Sullivan was so talented, the Academy awarded him the Mendelssohn Scholarship for two years in a row. He, therefore, studied with John Goss, who studied with Thomas Atwood, who in turn studied with Mozart. Sullivan similarly studied the piano at the Academy with Arthur O’Leary. Study Abroad During his first year, he also earned money by singing solos in the Chapel Royal. At the end of his second year, the Academy consequently continued his scholarship and sent him to study at the Leipzig Conservatoire. He certainly studied composition, and likewise counterpoint and piano. Hence, during his final year in Leipzig, Sullivan finally completed his graduation composition project: Incidental Music for Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Association with Gilbert It seems like Sullivan built the bulk of his composing career largely in the 1860s. As a result, he became famous for his incidental music for the Tempest and his Irish Symphony. He, therefore, began collaborating with the poet W. S. Gilbert in the 1870s. Rather than focus on serious opera, Gilbert and Sullivan, in contrast, concentrated on comic operas such as H. M. S. Pinafore, the Pirates of Penzance, and the Mikado. Therefore, certainly as a result of his education and experience, Sullivan composed a total of 24 operas, 11 symphonic works, and 10 choral pieces. Even more, he wrote a large number of noteworthy hymns such as Onward Christian Soldiers. Lost Chord Winds The general style of his music is maybe similar to Mendelssohn, Schumann, and perhaps Liszt. It seems like Sullivan was fond of writing distinct melodies for each character in his operettas. His melodies combine together as the characters did. Furthermore, he was a master orchestrator, and therefore played the flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone fluently. The Lost Chord Sullivan wrote his most noteworthy song the Lost Chord in 1877. As a result, it was a great success and was certainly performed all over the world by a variety of singers such as Enrico Caruso. Because Sullivan was the most famous composer in England, the Lost Chord became the most famous of all British or American songs of the 1870s and 1890s. Consequently, in 1888 Thomas Edison recorded The Lost Chord for the phonograph. It was one of the first songs ever recorded. Furthermore, Queen Victoria knighted Sullivan in 1883. Â

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533499). Meyerbeer’s Opera Le Prophète was one of the most influential works of the 19th century, inspiring Verdi, Wagner, Liszt and others with its dramatic score. Caprice sur Le Prophète de Meyerbeer begins with an extended Aria with several cadenzas. The work ends with a Polka in Rondo form which has a brillant variation. One of the most enigmatic figures in the history of Wind Music, Ali Ben Sou Alle (Charles-Valentin Soualle) was born in 1820 in Arras, France. After receiving his first prize in Clarinet at the Paris Conservatory in 1844. he served as the director of music of The French Marine Band in Senegal, and then was named first clarinet solo at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. However, after the Revolution of 1848, Soualle was forced to flee France to England where he settled in London, playing in the Orchestra of the Queen's Theatre. His songs and piano pieces were published in London. While in London, Soualle met another exiled French musician, Louis Antoine Jullien, who conducted a light music series in London. Jullien encouraged Soualle to take up the saxophone, and after modifying the instrument by adding a single octave mechanism (the modern system used today) and keys for the lower register, Soualle became known as a virtuoso and began touring performing solo recitals (or mono-concerts, as they were called at the time) calling his modified saxophone the «turcophone ». He performed in all the European capitals and then traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Manilla, Java, through China and then to India where he finally settled in Mysore, becoming the director of the Royal Music for the Maharadjah. It was during this period that he converted to Islam and changed his nmae to Ali ben Sou Alle (or Ali, son of Soualle). He subsequently travaled to Ile Maurice, to French Polynesia, the Cap of Natal and the Cap of Good Hope. All of these voyages were subjects of musical works which Soualle entitled Souvenirs de... and may perhaps have been part of a collectionknown as The Royal Album which was presented to the Prince of Wales after a royal concert. Soualle returned to Mysore in 1858 and was almost killed in the Indian Revolution.Around 1860, Soualle returned to France for health reasons and began publishing his own music. On March 27 1865, he performed a command performance for the Emperor Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace in the presence of the entire Imperial Family. After 1865, nothing more is known about him.

Jmsgu3 #3531403. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549727). Duration: ca. 7:00, Score: 12 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano: 7 pages. An epic choice for a recital or funeral. Fauré Background: In the first place, Gabriel Fauré 1845 –1924) was a famous French composer, musician, and educator. Furthermore, his musical ideas influenced numerous 20th-century composers. Therefore, historians regard him as one of the leading French composers of his time. Famous Works: Among his most famous compositions, by and large, are the Pavane, Elegie (op. 24), Requiem, Sicilienne, Nocturnes for piano and the songs Après un rêve and Clair de lune. Inasmuch as his early works are well-known and relatively easy to perform, Faure’s music seems to have become gradually more difficult during his later life. In other words, his later works are somewhat esoteric and complex. Early Home Life: Fauré was in fact born into a well-cultivated family. His aptitude for music became particularly clear early on - when he was still a boy. Under these circumstances, his parents sent him to a music institution in Paris. Consequently, the training he received there prepared him for a career as a church organist and choirmaster. Middle Life: It is important to realize that Fauré studied music composition with the French musical mastermind Camille Saint-Saëns, who became his lifelong friend. Fauré eventually graduated from college and earned a living as an organist and educator. During this period, he had, on the whole, little time to compose. He consequently became more successful in his middle age, becoming organist of the Église de la Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatoire. However, he still needed time on balance for composing. Therefore, given these points, he withdrew to the countryside during the summer to focus on composing. Later Life: Fauré was, in the final analysis, recognized in France as the foremost French composer of his time. The French government held a national musical tribute particularly for him in Paris. The French President notably headed the ceremony. Elsewhere, on the contrary, Fauré's music was slow to become accepted, except of course, in England. Legacy: Historians often describe Fauré's music in general as a transition between the end of Romanticism and the beginning of modernism. As an illustration, when Fauré was born, Chopin was still composing. However, by the time of Fauré's death, jazz and atonal music, in particular, had come to fruition. Fauré, by all means, suffered from increasing deafness in his later years. Some musicologists believe this to be indeed the cause of the esoteric nature of Faure’s final works.

The haunting, melodic beauty in this arrangement of Wexford Carol is full of lush harmonies and imitative countermelodies making it a great piece to perform in Christmas concerts and in church services. There are two performance options in this arrangement. One option is to, obviously, perform the piece as written all the way through. (approx. 3:50) The other (less recommended) option would be to omit one of the 3 verses which cuts over a minute of performance time. (approx. 2:40)Both Alto and Tenor Saxophone parts are included at the end of the PDF.The words of the final verse is only part of what makes this carol so powerful:With thankful heart and joyful mind,The shepherds went the babe to find,And as God’s angel has foretold,They did our Savior Christ behold.Within a manger He was laid,And by His side the virgin maidAttending to the Lord of Life,Who came on earth to end all strife.

David McKeown #4839877. Published by David McKeown (A0.587745). Sleeping Beauty, is the second ballet of three composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Here, the famous Waltz is arranged for Solo Alto Saxophone and Piano, directly from the orchestral score. The first performance of the ballet was in St Petersburg in 1890. Like his other ballets, Sleeping Beauty was slow to gain popularity with the public and international recognition only came after Tchaikovsky’s death. Included in the single download are nine pages of piano score and an attached four-page part for the solo instrument. Musicians at an upper intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The melody is expressive and legato; the accompaniment is challenging in parts with a high tempo throughout. Both parts require dramatic dynamic contrasts and the solo part explores a wide range of the instrument. The overall performance time is around five minutes. Published by David McKeown (A0.587786). The most popular of Scott Joplin’s piano rags during his lifetime, The Maple Leaf Rag was published in 1899. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films. This version for Alto Saxophone and Piano includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only.Musicians at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The overall performance time is around four minutes.Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with phrasing, syncopated rhythms and light articulation. Click the YouTube link to hear a full performance of the clarinet version of this arrangement.  There are many more top quality arrangements and compositions by David McKeown for you to browse at http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/publishers/david-mckeown/6203?aff_id=673683

This example of Eighteenth Century marketing was successful! The Sonata was a hit with both critics and the buying public and did much to establish the young composer’s reputation. This arrangement transcribes the piano score as a Solo for Alto Saxophone with Piano accompaniment. There is a separate solo part included with the score. The full length youtube performance is the clarinet version of this arrangement.Soloists at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The rhythms are mostly straightforward, and there is plenty of scope for expressive, lyrical playing with subtle tempo changes. Menuet II.Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer, musician, organist, and harpsichordist in the Baroque period of music. He is considered one of the greatest and most influential composers of his time and of all time, and his works form an essential part of the standard concert repertoire. Bach is credited with being largely responsible for the development of the sonata form in the Baroque era. He created several new forms of writing, such as the sinfonia and the prelude, which became popular in the Baroque. Bach also regularly combined two or three voice parts in the form of canons or fugues. His forms were complex and innovative and helped to establish the sonata as a form of composition. He composed some of the most famous and beautiful sonatas in music history. Bach's influence on the sonata form was massive.

Both the piano and the separate solo part are included in the one downloadable pdf file. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.534438 Composed by Jules Demersseman. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 19 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3493579. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534438). One of the first original compositions written for the saxophone, by one of Sax's closest associates. Jules Demersseman was born on January 9, 1833 in Hondschoote, a small town in the north of France now near the border of Belgium. He entered the Paris Conservatory in 1844 in the class of Jean-Louis Tulou and won a first prize in flute in 1845. Demersseman had a career as a pedogogue and soloist, often performing his own compositions. A close friend of Adolphe Sax, he wrote some of the first works ever written for the saxophone, as well as for the saxhorn and for Sax‘s valved trombone, most of which were published by Sax himself.. Demersseman died in Paris on December 1, 1866 at the age of 33. The work is in the form of a long lyrical episode punctuated with more florid passages which serve as counterpoint to the main melody.. It is important to listen to vocal performances in this style, especially in performing the solo cadenzas, which (in spite of the notation) are not necessarily meant to be performed as virtuoso effects., but rather as a means of displaying expression and beautiful tone.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.971651 Composed by Jeffrey Hoover. 20th Century,Contemporary,World. Score and part. 57 pages. Musicart Publications #4627679. Published by Musicart Publications (A0.971651). Winner of the 2019 SMP Press Contemporary Composition award, Wu Xing - Sonata for Five Elements (5 movements, 15 min. 30 sec) was composed by Jeffrey Hoover for Yusheng Li, who initiated the first professional university saxophone degree in China. A work for alto saxophone and piano, Wu Xing reflects a fusion of American and Chinese musical aesthetics and compositional techniques. Each movement represents an element in the traditional Wu Xing generative cycle. Musical elements of one movement carry into the next, in the same way these traditional Chinese elements evolve into the next: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The fourth movement, Metal, is for unaccompanied saxophone, and includes extended techniques including microtones, multiphonics, and altered tone colors. As with other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, Hoover has also created a series of paintings that visually interpret the music: Dancing in the Trees, The Ancient Lance, The Dragon's Creation, Temple Bells and Swords, and Life of the Earth. In the way the music is a fusion of American and Chines techniques, the paintings incorporate the Wu Xing philosophy approach. Images of the paintings may be projected during performance and are available directly from the composer.Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as and .Sc. from Ball State University. His career in higher education has included both faculty and arts administration appointments. An infectiously catchy melody make this jazz-style jaunt incredibly fun to play; for Eb or Bb Saxophone (both parts included) and piano. Sunny Blue meanders through various styles; a straight start (mainly 6/8), launching into a groovy swing (following with optional improvisation, or use one of the two written out 'solos' provided). The journey then gravitates to a waltz, before completing its course by ending with a swing ending, and dramatic finish. Sunny Blue has a duration of 3'22 minutes, and is aimed at grade 6/+ players and makes a fantastic concert item. The YouTube video demo shows the whole piece performed on alto sax. You will however receive a universal piano score, and then two saxophone parts (one for Eb, and one for Bb sax).
