Ruby and Steel (duration 7 min.) is a fantasy work for alto saxophone and piano, reflecting on the physical qualities and contrasts between an unlikely pairing of materials – nature's precious gemstone ruby and the manmade material steel. The ideas of the red glow of molten steel and the red light of ruby are held in common. Establishing a modern yet Romantic atmosphere, an extended piano solo opens the work. The music is developed through a thematic transformation process: gestures of earlier music reappears as transformations of its previous selves. The interaction (both musical dialogue and subsequent agreement) between piano and saxophone is a prominent characteristic, along with ebb-and-flow of tempo. As with several other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, there is an abstract painting–Ruby and Steel–created by Hoover as a visual interpretation of the musicJeffrey Hoover's work– music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra –has received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Whether making interdisciplinary works, or traditional stand-alone sonic or visual art, Hoover shapes his work through inner vision and practical experience. Jeffrey Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.Jeffrey Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as a M.M. and Bch.Sc. from Ball State University. His career in higher education has included both music faculty and arts administrative appointments.

Published by Nikolai Clavier (A0.942498). I was asked to write this piece for a Norwegian saxophonist studying in Copenhagen. He was looking for new music from each of the Scandinavian countries, and I decided to make my contribution a homage to the beautiful nature that Norway has to offer. Thus I drew inspiration from traditional folk music, as well as the majestic images of mountains, fjords and valleys across the Norwegian landscape. This piece has five movements and each has an illustrating title, creating a narrative sequence of movements. A vignette is a brief evocative description, account or episode. This produced a challenge in the sense that I had to be musically brief and technically concrete withing the span of a short movement. This in addition to the challenge of creating appropriate soundscapes and colors. The five movements are:I. Views over the FjordII. Winter sceneryIII. Nora at the farmIV. The Midnight Sun over the Finnmark HighlandsV. Autumn rain at the southern coastAn other interesting fact to note is the fact that the last four movements has rather specific seasons attached to themselves. Second movement is a winter movement with the original title Snow covered mountains and icy waters, and then follows a spring movement, a clear summer movement and autumn at last.

This version is arranged as a solo for Alto Saxophone and Piano.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, especially at weddings. The melody is mainly in the solo part. The performance time is a little more than one minute. The short sample here and the full length version on the youtube link are from the Clarinet version of this arrangement.Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with phrasing and expressive playing. The rhythms are straightforward though there are unexpected accidentals in the middle section which might pose a challenge for finger coordination and reading. Ave Maria was written by Franz Schubert in 1825 as the sixth song in his song cycle based on Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake. It is perhaps the best known of all his melodies, adapted for piano by Franz Liszt, and for orchestra many times since. It is often sung with the Latin lyrics of the Catholic hymn of the same name and has been heard everywhere from the Disney movie Fantasia to the funeral of J.F. Kennedy. The Bridal March was written by Richard Wagner in 1850, scored for orchestra and chorus, and opening the third act of his opera, Lohingren. Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, and its popularity has endured ever since.The Prince of Denmark’s March is better known nowadays as the Trumpet Voluntary and is often used in wedding ceremonies. It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard. Felix Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was originally written in 1842 as incidental music to Shakespeare’s famousplay, Midsummer Night’s Dream. When Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, it became instantly popular and has remained a wedding favourite ever since.These four arrangements are also available as single titles for $3.99 each.
