Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.533353 Composed by Ali Ben Sou Alle, Vincenzo Bellini. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Concert,Opera,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 28 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #2363203. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533353). One of the most enigmatic figures in the history of the Saxophone, Ali Ben Sou Alle (Charles-Valentin Soualle) was born in1820 in Arras, France. After receiving his first prize in Clarinet at the Paris Conservatory in 1844. he served as the director ofmusic of The French Marine Band in Senegal, and then was named first clarinet solo at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. However, after the Revolution of 1848, Soualle was forced to flee France to England where he settled in London, playing in the Orchestra of the Queen's Theatre. His songs and piano pieces were published in London. While in London, Soualle met another exiled French musician, Louis Antoine Jullien, who conducted a light music series inLondon. Jullien encouraged Soualle to take up the saxophone, and after modifying the instrument by adding a single octavemechanism (the modern system used today) and keys for the lower register, Soualle became known as a virtuoso and begantouring performing solo recitals (or mono-concerts, as they were called at the time) calling his modified saxophone the«turcophone ». He performed in all the European capitals and then traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Manilla, Java, throughChina and then to India where he finally settled in Mysore, becoming the director of the Royal Music for the Maharadjah. It wasduring this period that he converted to Islam and changed his nmae to Ali ben Sou Alle (or Ali, son of Soualle). Hesubsequently travaled to Ile Maurice, to French Polynesia, the Cap of Natal and the Cap of Good Hope. All of these voyageswere subjects of musical works which Soualle entitled Souvenirs de... and may perhaps have been part of a collection knownas The Royal Album which was presented to the Prince of Wales after a royal concert. Soualle returned to Mysore in 1858 and was almost killed in the Indian Revolution.Around 1860, Soualle returned to France for health reasons and began publishing his own music. On March 27 1865, heperformed a command performance for the Emperor Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace in the presence of the entire ImperialFamily. After 1865, nothing more is known about him. This fantasy begins with motifs from the 1st act chorus « Sempre Felc’Amina » ». The Count’s first act aria « Vi ravisso, o loughi ameni » is followed by an extended cadenza and leads to Amina and Elvino’s first act duo « Prendi l’amel ti dono ». Amina’s second act aria « Ah non guige! » is presented with a brilliant variation to bring the work to a close.

The canzone is famous as a showcase for tenors. Raffaele Mirate's performance of the bravura aria at the opera's 1851 premiere was hailed as the highlight of the evening. Before the opera's first public performance (in Venice), the aria was rehearsed under tight secrecy:  a necessary precaution, as La donna è mobile proved to be incredibly catchy, and soon after the aria's first public performance it became popular to sing among Venetian gondoliers.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 3 - SKU: A0.533345 Composed by Ali Ben Sou Alle. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 10 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #2348193. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533345). Ali Ben Sou Alle was born Jean-Baptiste SOUALLE in 1824 in Arras, France. He first studied the clarinet, winning a first prize in Clarinet in the class of Klosé at the Paris Conservatory. He then entered the Paris Opera orchestra, but left France in 1848 because of the revolution, fleeing to London. In 1850, he met Louis JUILLIEN, another early saxophonist, who encouraged Soualle to take up the saxophone. Soualle made several modifications to the instrument, including changes to the octave mechanism and the other keys for trills and alternative fingerings, many of which are used in modern saxophones. He named his hybrid creation the turcophone and began composing works for the instrument, which included fantasies on operatic themes, character pieces and a series of descriptive works which document several concert tours in Europe, Australia and the Orient which Soualle undertook. Upon his return to France around 1861, after his conversion to Islam, he changed his name to Ali Ben Sou Alle. Under that name, he performe recitals for the Prince of Wales and for the Emperor Napoleon III and his family in 1865. After this date, no trace of his career has currently been uncovered and it is though that he probably died around 1867. This work is .in two large sections, the first in the form of a lyrical aria, the second a lively schezando.

Diego Marani #6012989. Published by Diego Marani (A0.528426). The Hungarian Dances (German: Ungarische Tänze) by Johannes Brahms (WoO 1), are a set of 21 lively dance tunes based mostly on Hungarian themes, completed in 1879. They are among Brahms's most popular works and were the most profitable for him. The better-known Hungarian Dances include Nos. 1 and 5, the latter of which was based on the csárdás Bártfai emlék (Memories of Bártfa) by Hungarian composer Béla Kéler, which Brahms mistakenly thought was a traditional folksong. This arrangement for alto sax with piano accompaniment reflects faithfully the original.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1046936 By Keith Terrett. By Giacomo Puccini. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Classical,Opera,Romantic Period. Score and part. 5 pages. Keith Terrett #651276. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1046936). An arrangement of one of Puccini’s greatest arias for Eb Alto Saxophone & Piano. Great piece to improve your bell canto style of playing. Take a listen to Conrad Gozzo’s playing on the Tutti Trumpet CD for a fine example! Quando me'n vo', also known as Musetta's Waltz, is a soprano aria, a waltz in act two of Puccini's 1896 opera La bohème. It is sung by Musetta, in the presence of her bohemian friends, hoping to reclaim the attention of her occasional boyfriend Marcello. This scene takes place at the Café Momus [fr]. Shortly after Mimì, Rodolfo, and their friends have taken seats for a drink, Marcello's former girlfriend, Musetta, shows up with her current patron, the elderly Alcindoro. They quarrel for a bit, then the episode begins as Musetta initiates her move on Marcello. She grabs the spotlight, musically speaking, for a short self-promoting aria (Quando me'n vo'). It is a song directed at the people in the café as much as at the audience in the theater. Popular renditions of the melody were produced during the 1950s, including an American Top 40 hit by Sammy Kaye (You) and a version by Della Reese (Don't You Know?), which reached number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. You will find more Italian arias and Neapolitan songs in my Sibelius & ArrangeMe stores.

Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #2348197. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533347). One of the most enigmatic figures in the history of the Saxophone, Ali Ben Sou Alle (Charles-Valentin Soualle) was born in 1820 in Arras, France. While in London, Soualle met another exiled French musician, Louis Antoine Jullien, who conducted a light music series in London. Jullien encouraged Soualle to take up the saxophone, and after modifying the instrument by adding a single octave mechanism (the modern system used today) and keys for the lower register, Soualle became known as a virtuoso and began touring performing solo recitals (or mono-concerts, as they were called at the time) calling his modified saxophone the «turcophone ». He performed in all the European capitals and then traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Manilla, Java, through China and then to India where he finally settled in Mysore, becoming the director of the Royal Music for the Maharadjah. It was during this period that he converted to Islam and changed his nmae to Ali ben Sou Alle (or Ali, son of Soualle). He subsequently travaled to Ile Maurice, to French Polynesia, the Cap of Natal and the Cap of Good Hope. All of these voyages were subjects of musical works which Soualle entitled Souvenirs de... and may perhaps have been part of a collection known as The Royal Album which was presented to the Prince of Wales after a royal concert. Soualle returned to Mysore in 1858 and was almost killed in the Indian Revolution. Around 1860, Soualle returned to France for health reasons and began publishing his own music. On March 27 1865, he performed a command performance for the Emperor Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace in the presence of the entire Imperial Family. After 1865, nothing more is known about him. Soualle not only performed on the clarinet, saxophone and piano, but also frequently sang during his concerts. He also wrote songs while he was in London. His opera fantasies are usually written for the Alto saxophone and are generally in the form of an introductory aria with cadenza, a theme with one or more variations and then a final waltz movement in rondo form with a final brillant variation. This specific work opens with motives from the Opera‘s overture, leading to Donna Anna’s 1st act aria Or sai, chi l'onore. The duet Là ci darem la mano is the subject of two variations followed by a brief interlude using Zerlina’s aria Batti, batti, o bel Masetto and then the final section is the duo Andiam’ Andiam ‘ Mio Bene between Don Giovanni and Zerlina which ends the Act I duet. The work ends with a brillant coda

Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #1069727. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.1493037). Maria-Félicie-Clémence de Grandval (1828–1907) was born on January 28, 1828 at Saint-Rémy-des-Monts, France and died on January 15, 1907 in Paris. After the death of her mother, Louise Adèle du Temple de Mésières, her father the Baron de Reiset, a military officer remarried with an Englishwoman and moved his family to London. After beginning her musical studies privately, she studied the piano with the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, who was a family friend. Returning to France, she studied the piano briefly with Chopin and composition with Camille Saint-Saëns, who remember their first meeting: “I was 12 when I heard the vicomtesse de Grandval for the first time, who was 18. It was at a musical morning concert at the home of the violinist de Cuvillon. She sang a song of her own composition ‚La Source, in which she accompanied herself. I was struck by the fluidity of her playing, which purely and without useless inflections, was quite close to my way of viewing music. This unified and tranquil style came out of her studies with Chopin.” Camille Saint-Saëns: Quelques mots sur l’exécution des œuvres de Chopin, in: “Le courrier musical de Paris” 13 [1910], S. 386). At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa. She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully Prudhomme, Michel Carré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.) She is chiefly known today for her music for wind instruments, especially for the oboe.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.534135 Composed by Louis Adolphe Mayeur. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Concert,Opera,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 29 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3133401. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534135). Louis Adolphe Mayeur (1837 - 1894), was a Belgium clarinetist, saxophonist, composer and conductor who spent most of his musical career in France; Entering the French Military in 1855, he was a clarinetist in the Second Régiment of the Cuirassiers (Mounted Calvary) of the Garde Impériale. A student of Klosé at the Paris Conservatory, he received his First Prize in Clarinet in 1860. One of the inner circle of Adolphe Sax (along with fellow Belgiums Jules Demersseman and Jean-Baptiste Singelée, whose “Quartet for Saxophones“ was premièred with Mayeur playing and Demersseman conducting), Mayeur took up the saxophone and was quickly engaged as the saxophone soloist in the Opera House of Brussels, La Monnaie (the Mint). Sax commissioned a number of works from Mayeur for the saxophone, which were published by his company and used in his class at the Paris Conservatory.By 1871, Mayeur was also named Saxophone Solo with the Paris Opera, performing in opears and ballets by Halévy, Meyerbeer, Thomas, Saint-Saens, Massenet, Délibes and Paladlihe. It would appear that sometime during this period, his relations with Sax became difficult, culminating in his publications of works by Buffet-Crampon, one of Sax’s rival companies and one of the main protagonists in the series of lawsuits which led to Sax’s bankrupcy. Mayeur’s own declining health lead to his death in 1894.The Grande Fantaisie de Concert sur Rigoletto dates from 1877. The contrasting sections use motifs from arias and duets from Verdi’s opera. Florid cadenzas seperate the various sections, but those passages should be played in the manner of “bel canto†ornamentation, always lyrical and songlike. Versions are available from Musik Fabrik for Symhony Orchestra (on rental : 2222/2000/Timp/hp/strings) and for Concert Band (for sale). The score plus solo part for each of the versions is available for sale, as well as the individual parts for the concert band version
