Scheherazade, also commonly Sheherazade Op. 35, is a symphonic suite composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1888 and based on One Thousand and One Nights (also known as The Arabian Nights). This orchestral work combines two features typical of Russian music in general and of Rimsky-Korsakov in particular: dazzling, colorful orchestration and an interest in the East, which figured greatly in the history of Imperial Russia, as well as orientalism in general. After the opening which uses motives from the Overture, the main melody of the famous Sextet is presented. The tenor aria from the last act is presented with several vrariations. Finally, motifs form the fmaous mad scene end the work in a brilliant valse.One of the most enigmatic figures in the history of the Saxophone, Ali Ben Sou Alle (Charles-Valentin Soualle) was born in 1820 in Arras, France. After receiving his first prize in Clarinet at the Paris Conservatory in 1844. he served as the director of music of The French Marine Band in Senegal, and then was named first clarinet solo at the OpÃ©ra-Comique in Paris. However, after the Revolution of 1848, Soualle was forced to flee France to England where he settled in London, playing in the Orchestra of the Queen's Theatre. His songs and piano pieces were published in London. While in London, Soualle met another exiled French musician, Louis Antoine Jullien, who conducted a light music series in London. Jullien encouraged Soualle to take up the saxophone, and after modifying the instrument by adding a single octave mechanism (the modern system used today) and keys for the lower register, Soualle became known as a virtuoso and began touring performing solo recitals (or mono-concerts, as they were called at the time) calling his modified saxophone the Â«turcophone Â». He performed in all the European capitals and then traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Manilla, Java, through China and then to India where he finally settled in Mysore, becoming the director of the Royal Music for the Maharadjah. It was during this period that heconverted to Islam and changed his nmae to Ali ben Sou Alle (or Ali, son of Soualle). He subsequently travaled to Ile Maurice, to French Polynesia, the Cap of Natal and the Cap of Good Hope. All of these voyages were subjects of musical works which Soualle entitled Souvenirs de... and may perhaps have been part of a collection known as The Royal Album which was presented to the Prince of Wales after a royal concert. Soualle returned to Mysore in 1858 and was almost killed in the Indian Revolution. Around 1860, Soualle returned to France for health reasons and began publishing his own music. OnMarch 27 1865, he performed a command performance for the Emperor Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace in the presence of the entire Imperial Family. After 1865, nothing more is known about him.

I therefore chose to write for this instrument, which the piano supports seriously.My republican roots (in the French sense) suggested that I set several revolutionary songs from 1789. I therefore chose the emblematic â€œ Ah Ã§a ira ! â€, after having seen the famous sequence of â€œSi Versailles lâ€™Ã©tait contÃ©â€ where Piaf sings this song hanging of the grill of the Palace of Versailles, in the superbe version by Jean FranÃ§aix.I added at the end â€œ La Carmagnole â€ and the famous â€œ Il pleut bergÃ¨re â€ a foreshadowing of the destiny of Marie-Antoinette who is said to have enjoyed singing this air. One will find, a bit hidden, a short citation of a work for organ by Bach.This isnâ€™t a pastiche but rather a sort of modern update to this form in respecting its codes, its forms of this type of work which disappeared temporarily due to forced musical austerity.ï»¿

When Queen Victoriaâ€™s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, it became instantly popular and has remained a wedding favourite ever since.This version is arranged for Solo Alto Saxophone and Piano and the performance time is around three and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and interchangeable. Repeats may also be ignored. Here, the famous main theme is arranged for Solo Alto Saxophone and Piano, directly from the orchestral score. The first performance of the ballet in Moscow in 1877 was not well received. The production was fraught with disagreements between choreographer and composer; the Russian audience were suspicious of the storyâ€™s Germanic origins and the music was regarded as too complex for ballet. Tchaikovsky did not live to see a triumphant revival production in 1895 that confirmed Swan Lake as one of the greatest ballet scores of all. Included in the single download are six pages of piano score and a separate two-page part for the solo instrument. The short sample here and the full length version on the youtube link are from the Clarinet version of this arrangement.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The melody is expressive and legato; the accompaniment is challenging in parts, with tremolos and rich chords. Both parts require dramatic dynamic contrasts and the solo part explores a wide range of the instrument.
