Innovations First of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and certainly instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and likewise reverberation for maximum effect. Seems like Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was rather the first to indicate them such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He therefore developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style. Polychoral Works Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather more than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements which seem bizarre on paper, can in contrast sound perfectly in-balance. First Works Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets along with his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Seems like Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material, but developing it by sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, here the instruments are certainly an essential part of the presentation. Also, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Homophony Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. Avatar: The Way of Water, is the long-awaited sequel to the award-winning film from 2009.  The soundtrack for the new film was written by Simon Franglen, who originally wrote 5 hours of music to cover any and all situations in the almost 3-hour movie.  From Darkness to Light is a beautiful instrumental piece in the movie that shows off the beauty of the water.  On paper, the music seems a little too simple, but the chord progressions together with the moving parts make for quite a beautiful and memorable piece.  This arrangement is scored for clarinet choir - Eb, 4 Bb, alto, bass and contrabass.  One of the most important parts of this piece is what helps create the mood, which is where the part called “Shimmer†comes in.  In an interview, Simon Franglen said that an important part of the music is the feeling of light, and he achieved that by including shimmering sounds into his tunes.  With that in mind, this is how the “Shimmer†part can be played:  Hang a few keys (house keys, car keys, etc.) that have different pitches on short lengths of string.  Use a small metal or wooden object to lightly hit the keys to create little “dingsâ€.  Be creative with this percussive part!  You can use whistle tones, a little xylophone, wind chimes, etc.  The idea is to create a magical mood without overpowering the music.  Play this part wherever there is a note in the measure.  Duration: 3.75 minutes.

If your choir doesn't have a contrabass, then it can be substituted by another bass, or any Bb instrument in a similar range, but it is a part that needs to be covered, as it has important (but quite simple) bass lines.  There are 2 body percussion parts that are quite simple, but particularly important.  It's a stomp and clap (or snap).  You could also use 2 different drums, buckets, etc.  Substitute a low pitch for the stomp and a higher one for the clap. Duration: 3 minutes.

A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. They also gave the first performance of the song in the United States in New York City in 1839. By the 1840's, the song was well known and was reported to be a favorite of Frederick William IV of Prussia. During this period, the melody changed slightly to become the version that is commonly heard today. The version of the melody that is generally used today is a slow, meditative lullaby, or pastoral, differing slightly from Gruber's original which has a moderate tempo. The song has been translated into about 140 languages and has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. CELEBRATION FANFARE and PROCESSIONAL FOR CLARINET CHOIR: Eb soprano, three Bb soprano, Bass, Contra-alto or/and and Contra-bass. The third clarinet is fairly easy. It is designed to be suitable for any large indoor space, using mostly whole-tone mode to reduce clashes of harmony caused by echoes. The Eb clarinet is in antiphony with the rest, and should be positioned well away from them. Rondo, with fanfares, a march and a processional pavan. It would be easy to cut almost any section--treat it as a fanfare kit. 2 minutes 40 seconds.

This is the beginning of Scene 4 of the oratorio, The Annunciation to the Shepherds, after the birth of Jesus. The word pastorale in baroque music is a melody in thirds over a drone bass. Originally called Pifa, this movement was named after the shepherd bagpipers - pifferari - who used to play their instruments in the streets of Rome at Christmastime. Scored for 3 Bb and Bb bass clarinets. Optional parts are: *Eb clarinet to play in addition to, or in lieu of the 1st part *Alto clarinet to play in addition to, or in lieu of the 3rd part *Bb contrabass clarinet to play in addition to the bass part an octave lower Duration: 2.5 minutes.

It is based on Cornelius Ryan's 1959 non-fiction book of the same name about the D-Day landings at Normandy on June 6, 1944. Â The picture opens with a view of the beach and the sounds of the waves washing ashore. Â There is a lone helmet lying upside down on the beach, and over the sounds of the sea, and we hear the motif from Beethoven's 5th Symphony, the dot-dot-dash of morse code signaling V, for victory. Â Throughout the film we hear variations on the theme of the march which culminates in the playing of the full march as the credits roll. Here scored for clarinet choir is the march from The Longest Day, as written by Paul Anka.

ISBN 9790570483563.For 3 Bb Clarinets and 1 Bass Clarinet, 'Mercy' is an obsessively expressive Adagio (so to say, a Samuel Barber's equivalent for woodwinds) with a homophonic texture, like a four part chorale. Rhythmically, this piece offers no problems. While the first part requires more experienced players, parts 2, 3 and 4 are relatively easy to play. Most groups would be able to master this piece after only a couple of rehearsals. Some would say that mercy is a virtue, others (following Nietzsche) that it is a weakness. Do not seek in this piece a one-to-one musical transcription of merciful feelings, but rather concentrate on the smoothness and tender sound quality associated with it. Rather than 'pity', mercy is about empathy, togetherness and support - this attitude can also show while performing music.
