This arrangement of the Allegro movement from Henry Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. This selection is one of the arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library, many of which are being made available for the first time. They have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (13 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. This particular arrangement is for a Clarinet Octet, consisting of 8 Bb Clarinets, but there are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this piece. You may find something else that may suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles also available for purchase. This piece was originally written for voice and piano, without any words, but sung with just a vowel sound - most times, ah. Because there are no lyrics, Rachmaninoff left it up to the musicians and listeners to interpret it as they wished.

The 1st part has most of the lead, although each instrument is featured at different times in the piece. This setting was made by John Gibson for clarinet 1-3, alto clarinet (with an alternate 4th Bb part), and bass clarinet. This could be performed by just 5 players, or as a clarinet choir (without contra's or Eb soprano).

The truly distinctive sound has ensured that the piece has continued to be played and arranged for all sorts of groups in the almost century-and-a-half since the play was first performed. This particular arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for a Bb clarinet quartet. The melody jumps between all four parts and players will need to be able to play most of the range of the instrument regardless of which part they are playing. That said, most intermediate players should be able to play this piece given they have the range and it will be a challenge for less experienced players. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813438). Canon (Pachelbel) (Bb) (Clarinet Octet) - Advanced/Intermediate - . This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Clarinet Octet. Three Clarinets play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other five instruments. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (36 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, but another version is also available in the key of D Major if you would prefer. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar which are also available. There are quite a few other arrangements in a variety of styles and I'm certain you will find something else which might interest you as well. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement of Pachelbel's Canon will be a challenge to some performers but will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

He moved to Russia in 1897 to play the trumpet in various groups and to teach music. Böhme wrote 46 known compositions. This sextet was written for brass instruments, and is one of his best-known pieces. It is quite a gem, and I wanted to make it available to other instrumental groups to perform. The entire work is available for purchase, but this selection is the 1st movement of 4 only. Scored for 4 Bb, alto, and bass clarinets. There is an optional Eb part that can be played in addition to or in place of the 1st Bb clarinet part. This work is suitable for intermediate-advanced musicians. Duration: 5.75 minutes.
