The Sonata also maintains the composer's original key of C Major which requires the clarinet performers to play in the key of D Major, thereby raising the difficulty level slightly, to a level 5 or 5.5. The first two sections are typical of the tango rhythms you would expect to hear- very syncopated in all parts against a strong melodic line. The 3rd section by contrast is more lyrical in nature, but the underlying tango rhythms present light punctuations in support. The final section is a return of the main theme-then onto a short coda to finish.Aimed at the intermediate player, the full score is 15 pages- parts 3 pages, and it is nearly 4 minutes long.Price is for the full score and parts.Great for concerts, events, contests etc.

Published by James Haynor (A0.782237). William Byrd (birth date variously given as c.1539/40 or 1543 – 4 July 1623), was an English composer of the Renaissance. He wrote in many of the forms current in England at the time, including various types of sacred and secular polyphony, keyboard (the so-called Virginalist school), and consort music. Although he produced sacred music for Anglican services, sometime during the 1570s he became a Roman Catholic and wrote Catholic sacred music later in his life. Libera me, Domine written for five voices is a great example of his work and transcribes well for clarinet quintet. ( Duration 6:30 )

Published by Stephen Davies (A0.1050184). Percy Graingers' interesting life and eccentricities are widely known, however he was a master of his art. Most musicians will be familiar with the Tonic-Solfa ( Do Re Me etc), without boring you too much, a 'moveable' Do is the tonic of any key, a 'Fixed Do' is always a C !! In this piece Grainger employs his own 'Immovable Do', a C that is constant throughout the piece, even though it's in F!!! Now this would cause difficulties for any wind group!!! Graingers' instructions for anyone playing the melody on the Harmonium & Organ .. these notes should be stuck fast with pencils, and thus held down to the very end of the piece... So my solution is to seamlessly dovetail the C between an Eb and a Bb Clarinet, so that the fixed Do is to all intents and purposes always sounding. Graingers subtitle to the piece was ' The Cyphering C', which according to Chambers dictionary Cyphering means:- ' In an Organ, continuous sounding of a note not played, due to a mechanical failure '! The more melodic parts are a joy to listen to, with an infectious original tune, weaving between all the players.

Helpful hints: In addition to getting the counts down, even more important is to practice feeling the music collectively together because rigid counting takes away from the flowing emotive nature of the piece. There are actually 3 smaller ensembles within this piece that all three subgroups must musically move together in harmony, rhythm, and balance. When that is achieved, the music and harmonic overtones will be exquisite. The instrumentation is also so important because of the timbre that each instrument contributes to the ensemble. Waltz of the Harlequins is an original piece- The Harlequin is the best-known of the comic servant characters from the Italian commedia dell'arte- popularised in Paris in the 16thc. The Harlequin is characterized by his checkered costume. Their role is that of a light-hearted, nimble, and astute servant, Harlequin inherits his physical agility and his trickster qualities, as well as his name, from a mischievous devil character in medieval passion plays. This concert piece written in waltz time (almost 1 in a bar)is playful and light, and represents the characters escapades. It is in ternary for in Concert C minor with the middle section in A flat major major before returning to the opening them and coda. It has been set to intermediate although some parts an early intermediate player would manage. The whole score in on the youtube link for you to assess.
