Published by JB Linear (A0.581881). Klarifications for Clarinet Choir is a three movement piece for a large clarinet choir. It is set for Eb Soprano (one player), Bb clarinet 1-2-3, 2 alto clarinets, 2 bass clarinets, and Bb Contra. This would be best in a clarinet choir with at least two on a part in the Bb clarinet section. Here is what Margaret Thornhill wrote about this piece in The Clarinet magazine, June 2017: The dramatic first movement is a dialogue between an eefer (Eb clarinet) and the rest of the ensemble, incorporating paraphrases of excepts from Bach to Bizet. It is followed by a surprising second movement chorale with slap tongue, flutter tongue and finger popping intended to be individually miked. The final movement is an exciting montuno, including a section where each person can choose which riffs to play.The 1st movement, Canons Firing From an Ever Rising Staircase, Or, Heed the Effer's Frantic Calls To explain the title just a bit, the ever rising staircase is an aural trick that, if done precisely, sounds like the music keeps rising without really doing so. This was derived from what is called a Shepard's Tone. The canons firing are not cannons! The bass instruments play small sections of actual canons (like fancy rounds) written by J S Bach, Mozart, and others. Each time the solo Eb clarinet (the Effer) announces the coming canon firing in a frantic sort of way. The 2nd movement (Close Encounters with Basses) makes use of a number of unusual sounds on clarinet (or parts thereof) along with a few extended techniques that are fairly easy to play with the clear instructions provided. The altos, basses, and contra should be closely miked to be heard.The 3rd movement (Sometimes Free - A Montuno) starts off with a rich beat in the basses and gradually joined with the rest of the clarinets. In the montuno section there are 4 bar phrases each player can choose from to play during the 32 bars. They may choose what they will, either playing a different variation each time, using the same one each time, or choosing to not play for a particular 4 bar section. This is not a free improvisation, however! This is definitely for an advanced group of players. The 1st movement is also available separately. The sample recording uses Finale software in the 1st and 3rd movement, and John Gibson's recording of the 2nd movement.

How well would it do without a video? I don't know, but if you have some brave souls in your group, you could put on a funny skit to go along with this piece. This piece is just meant to be entertaining and something that your audience could get a good laugh at.  Scored for clarinet choir - 3 Bb, alto, bass, and Bb contrabass.  There are optional Eb contra alto and double string bass parts that double the bass and contrabass part.Duration: 2.5 minutes.

SWEET SUITE: QUARTET FOR CLARINETS Featuring the music of ALEXANDRE GUILMANT In this delightful suite of 4 movements, I have chosen four very eclectic works by the French Organist and Composer Alexandre Guilmant. In his time (1837-1911) he helped found the Schola Cantorum of Paris, and served as Professor of Organ at the Paris Conservatoire from 1896 until his death. His Wiki entry is an interesting read!! Oh, and don't be fooled by the gentle lilt of the first movement! 1. CHANT DU MATIN This jolly piece has a very memorable theme, with an almost Music Hall 'middle eight' section, littered with grace notes, and ends with a big 'film' finish! 2. This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Clarinet Quintet. Three Clarinets play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other two Clarinets. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (30 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, but another version is also available in the key of D Major if you would prefer. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. Grant Horsley #736950. Published by Grant Horsley (A0.1136960). Cocktails is a lazy, bluesy, jazzy relaxing style piece scored for Clarinet in E flat, 3 B flat Clarinets, Alto and Bass Clarinet. It is in a relaxed 12/8 with plenty of lush harmonies. It is in concert B flat major in ternary form (middle section in E flat major) and a small coda. I have set it to intermediate level as most of the rhythmic work is quarter notes and eighths. It could be a useful for gaining experience playing in 12/8 time as well as learning the style. The full score is 9 pages without repeats- parts are 2 pages each and the range of the instruments is about 2 octaves- top part a touch more. The full score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. It is 4 mins 37 in length- ideal for concerts, recitals, contests, festivals, occasions, Christmas or just something different to add to the repertoire. Price is for the full score and all parts.

This was a light, popular, and dramatic entertainment form of the late 16th century, sometimes regarded as one of the precursors to opera. Al bel de tuoi capelli is just such a madrigal. Vocalise is such a beautiful piece that it has been arranged for every instrument and vocal combination out there. This piece was originally written for voice and piano, without any words, but sung with just a vowel sound - most times, ah. Because there are no lyrics, Rachmaninoff left it up to the musicians and listeners to interpret it as they wished.

Dave Brubeck wrote In Your Own Sweet Way as a jazz balled for his wife, Iona in the early 1950's. The song was covered by many jazz artists and became a jazz standard. The 1st part has most of the lead, although each instrument is featured at different times in the piece. This setting was made by John Gibson for clarinet 1-3, alto clarinet (with an alternate 4th Bb part), and bass clarinet. This could be performed by just 5 players, or as a clarinet choir (without contra's or Eb soprano).
