'Petite Suite' By Alexandre TansmanScored for Clarinet Sextet by Stephen Davies.If one asked have you heard of Alexandre Tansman? to a 100 people (... who are presumably none pianists!), the answer would probably be mostly 'no'.Tansman left us in 1986 with a body of work that is diverse and inventive, reflecting on a long and complicated life. His biography of his good friend Igor Stravinsky is still the 'go to' book on the subject.This little taster of Tansmans music was of course written for piano, however opening up the score for Clarinet Sextet reveals all kinds of possibilities.This arrangement is in 7 very short movements, hopefully leaving the listener wanting more!!A brief biography of Tansman can be found here:https://youtu.be/ROLBDPJZzDI?si=87dZe45mkQIXANYd

Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.1377700). Instrumentation: Eb Clarinet, four Bb Clarinets, Alto, Bass, Contra-alto and Contrabass Clarinets. The son of a tanner, John Wilbye was born at Brome, Suffolk. Wilbye is probably the most famous of all the English madrigalists; his pieces have long been favourites and are often included in modern collections. His madrigals include Weep, weep mine eyes, Weep, O mine eyes and Draw on, sweet night. He also wrote the poem, Love not me for comely grace. His style is characterized by delicate writing for the voice, acute sensitivity to the text and the use of “false relations between the major and minor modes.The text for this one goes:Ah! cannot sighs not tears, nor aught else move thee To pity me, who more than life do love thee?O cruel fates! see, now away she’s flying,And fly, alas! alas! and leave me dying.Farewell, most fair, farewell, yet more disdainful: Was never grief like mine, nor death more painful.No 30 from the Second Set of Madrigals, 1598. originally for SSATTB a capella. As Wilbye labelled this Apt for Viols or Voices, I felt justified in making this arrangement.

Five musical movements: 'CREEPING PLATES: very slow and ponderous music and foreboding 12-note serial progressions. HOT VENT GASES depicts the toxic bubbles rising from the ocean floor. VENT LIFE represents the weird worms, microrganisms, crabs and fish which survive there. VOLCANO Â music describes explosions, falling boulders and terror, and finally mourns the loss of life, devastated landscape and villages. EARTHQUAKE: Â the music tries to depict the swaying effect and noise, falling bricks and running feet. More mourning. Commissioned by Hull Eclectic Clarinet Collective. Â 9minutes.

Published by Stephen Davies (A0.1050184). Percy Graingers' interesting life and eccentricities are widely known, however he was a master of his art. Most musicians will be familiar with the Tonic-Solfa ( Do Re Me etc), without boring you too much, a 'moveable' Do is the tonic of any key, a 'Fixed Do' is always a C !! In this piece Grainger employs his own 'Immovable Do', a C that is constant throughout the piece, even though it's in F!!! Now this would cause difficulties for any wind group!!! Graingers' instructions for anyone playing the melody on the Harmonium & Organ .. these notes should be stuck fast with pencils, and thus held down to the very end of the piece... So my solution is to seamlessly dovetail the C between an Eb and a Bb Clarinet, so that the fixed Do is to all intents and purposes always sounding. Graingers subtitle to the piece was ' The Cyphering C', which according to Chambers dictionary Cyphering means:- ' In an Organ, continuous sounding of a note not played, due to a mechanical failure '! The more melodic parts are a joy to listen to, with an infectious original tune, weaving between all the players.

Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891971). Clarinet Sextet, very loosely based on SONATA by LUDVIG SCHYTTE. In this arrangement I have taken the liberty of fusing Victorian harmonies with a much more jazz based chordal approach, this behemoth of 306 bars has only one semi-quaver hidden away! Ludvig Schytte (28 April 1848 in Aarhus – 10 November 1909 in Berlin) was a Danish composer, pianist, and teacher. Born in Aarhus, Denmark, Schytte studied with Niels Gade and Edmund Neupert, and Liszt. In 1884, he travelled to Germany to study with Franz Liszt. Schytte lived and taught in Vienna between 1886 and 1907 and spent the last two years of his life teaching in Berlin. Originally trained as a pharmacist, Schytte composed a Piano Concerto in C-sharp minor, Op. 28, and a Sonata in B-flat, among numerous other piano works. He also wrote two operas: Hero (25 September 1898 in Copenhagen) and Der Mameluk (22 December 1903 in Vienna). His shorter works are still used today as educational studies for piano students. Incidentally I am reliably informed that his name is pronounced in Danish as Lullfig Shooter, just in case of any confusion!!!
