In this arrangement of 'Berceuse' by Cyril Scott, I've taken the liberty of adding Jazz changes to the original score, but maintaining the melodic flow, which incidentally, has a delightful descending melody line that is shared between all the players. This piece has been arranged and adapted for Clarinet Sextet, wildly ignoring the original articulation and dynamics to suit an ensemble of Clarinet technicians playing at their best!! SOLEMN DANCETypical of Scott's style, the time signature is not a constant throughout, the added articulation is meant to bring out the extraordinary harmonies he employs, a particularly lush piece best performed in a generous acoustic. FUGUEPossibly the most bizarre fugue that I've ever heard, in the original there is an Adagio beginning and coda, which is omitted here simply to get to the 'nuts and bolts' of this unusual fugue. Scott uses chromaticism in both the melody and the harmony, interspersed with soft landings, and hard tranches of vertical and horizontal passages that grow deeper and deeper. As usual the time signatures are, at times, random.Â

The lyrics come from the Defence of Fort M'Henry, a poem written on September 14, 1814, by 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large U.S. flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, known as the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the U.S. victory. This arrangement of ?Ye Banks and Braes O? Bonnie Doon? by Percy Grainger is based on his own arrangement for wind band, first published in 1936. His original setting of the work for a chorus of women?s unison voices, accompanied by men?s voices, whistlers, and harmonium or organ at will was written in 1903. It is a simple melody based on a poem by Scottish poet Robert Burns, The Banks of Doon, written in 1793. A small group of 6 players can play this arrangement effectively: 4 B-flat Clarinets, Alto Clarinet, and Bass Clarinet. However, many optional parts have been included (as Grainger would have liked!) and can supplement or replace the instruments in the core ensemble as desired, including:
E-Flat Clarinet (for Clarinet 1)
Basset Horn/Bass Clarinet 2 (for Alto Clarinet)
