This piece has been arranged and adapted for Clarinet Sextet, wildly ignoring the original articulation and dynamics to suit an ensemble of Clarinet technicians playing at their best!! SOLEMN DANCETypical of Scott's style, the time signature is not a constant throughout, the added articulation is meant to bring out the extraordinary harmonies he employs, a particularly lush piece best performed in a generous acoustic. FUGUEPossibly the most bizarre fugue that I've ever heard, in the original there is an Adagio beginning and coda, which is omitted here simply to get to the 'nuts and bolts' of this unusual fugue. Scott uses chromaticism in both the melody and the harmony, interspersed with soft landings, and hard tranches of vertical and horizontal passages that grow deeper and deeper. As usual the time signatures are, at times, random.Â

This arrangement is re-spelled as a 3/4 time signature, implying a waltz-like feel and making the syncopated rhythms much easier to read. Each part has beautiful legato lines and the melody is spread throughout the parts.The Alto Clarinet part can also be played by a Bb Clarinet; an alternative 5th Clarinet part is included.Only Clarinet 1 goes above a high C, so the other parts are accessible for less experienced players.If additional clarinettists are available, it is recommended that Clarinets 3 & 4 are doubled, as these are the parts with the fewest rests.The full score is also included for reference or for use by a conductor.

The English translation is as follows: Salvation is created, in midst of the earth, O God, O our God. Alleluia. (source: CPDL.org)While this work began for choir, an arrangement was written for concert band in 1957 by Bruce Houseknecht. That version was my first exposure to the work. I thought it would work well with the organic sound of a clarinet choir and set out to arrange it. In this arrangement, I went back to the original choral work. I kept the original time signature throughout most of the piece. However, I did transpose the piece into a more clarinet-friendly key.

Scored for E flat Clarinet, 3 B flat Clarinet, Alto and Bass Clarinet, March of the Musketeers is a bright heroic march based upon the characters in the story of The Three Musketeers Quite a simple piece, it is in ternary form starting in the concert key of F major with the middle section in B flat major, before returning to F major and on to a flourishing ending. The outer sections have strong melodic lines underpinned crisp staccato support providing a solid striding beat. The middle section (which should be played in exactly the same pulse) is more lyrical and legato featuring triplets, but still retains the underpinning crotchet beat, but with a more delicate approach for variation. After a short link passage which features a couple of time signature changes, the main theme returns with a short coda- like few bars to take the piece to a conclusion. The full score is 15 pages and the parts are 3 each. It is 4 mins 15 in length. The whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. Hauntingly beautiful is how the Recordare from Mozart's Requiem is often described. Originally written for an orchestra and four vocal soloists, it has now been transcribed by Regis Bookshar for a Clarinet Quintet, consisting of 5 Bb Clarinets and would be a wonderful addition to any music library. This arrangement will provide students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long, sustained phrases, and also to give them the chance to play this beautiful composition, something which they may not have had the opportunity to do, otherwise. The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has performed the Trumpet Quintet version of the Recordare for funerals, providing beautiful, introspective music for the occasion. There is some controversy surrounding the circumstances of the Requiem's composition because Mozart died before he could complete it. Count Franz von Walsegg had commissioned a Requiem Mass but Mozart had received only half of the payment in advance. So, upon his death on December 5th, 1791, his widow, Constanze, wished to have the work completed secretly by someone else and submit it to the count as having been completed by Mozart to collect the final payment. Joseph von Eybler was one of the first composers to be asked to complete the score and had worked on a number of movements but felt unable to complete the remainder and gave the manuscript back to Constanze Mozart. The task was then given to another composer, Franz Xaver Sussmayr. Sussmayr borrowed some of Eybler's work in making his completion, added his own orchestration to other movements and added several new movements which a Requiem Mass would normally comprise. He then added a final section by adapting the opening two movements which Mozart had written to the different words which finish the Requiem Mass, which according to both Sussmayr and Mozart's wife, was done according to Mozart's directions. The completed score, initially by Mozart but largely finished by Sussmayr, was then dispatched to Count Walsegg complete with a counterfeited signature of Mozart dated 1792. Despite the controversy over how much of the music is actually Mozart's, the commonly performed Sussmayr version has become widely accepted by the public, and is considered one of Mozart's finest compositions. The Recordare is considered by many people to be one of the most beautiful compositions in Mozart's entire catalogue.
