The music is thought to have originated in Muslim Spain a thousand years ago and spread across North Africa in the following centuries. The music is set to the ancient Muwasha poetry, often with secular themes such as love. Andalusi music remains popular today, especially in Morocco, and has influenced many other forms of Arab music. Øب aims to capture the melody and spirit of this timeless music.Øب is written for players at an advanced intermediate standard and upwards. The preamble is in free time, like an improvisation, followed by the melody and instrumental interludes in a typical ten beat cycle. Øب has a performance time of around three minutes. This version is arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Alto Saxophone. Down by the Riverside was sung in African-American communities before the American Civil War but did not appear in print until included in a 1918 collection of spirituals. Several versions were recorded by gospel choirs in the ‘20s and ‘30s, and Down by the Riverside, with its lyric, I ain’t goin’ to study war no more, was adopted as an anti-war song by the ‘60s counterculture.Down by the Riverside is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. Three choruses and two verses are played, with variations, in a gospel swing style. Published by David McKeown (A0.591141). The Candy Cakewalk is a fun and original duet written by David McKeown for one Flute and one Alto Saxophone. The Candy Cakewalk is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. The Cakewalk was popular in the early twentieth century but its origins go back to slave plantations in the nineteenth century where dancers would often compete for a prize of cake. The music was a marriage of European March and African-American syncopation and was a forerunner of Ragtime. The Candy Cakewalk is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo, some syncopated rhythms and accidentals. The playing-time is around one and a half minutes, but can be lengthened by adding repeats at the performer’s discretion.
