A fun, challenging arrangement for four cellos, preferably five if you can find a fifth cellist. Originally for voice and piano, this version also has elements of Berlioz' and Liszt's orchestral adaptations.

Cello 4: the father

The accompanying parts are passed around among the players, so nobody is playing endless triplets. Parts 1-4 all get the melody and the opening "horse" theme.

All parts go into treble clef. All parts are difficult, but parts 4 and 5 are easier than the others.

This arrangement of Coldplay's Viva la Vida for cello ensemble was originally created for a Boulder Cello Project collaboration with Chase the Music. An 11-page score and four separate two-page cello parts are included. It can be played by groups as small as a quartet and works best with at least two cellists per part.

The thick texture of a cello ensemble is offset with driving articulated rhythms to bring vibrant energy to this piece that can only be offered by strings. In concert settings, optionally add driving bass drum quarter notes throughout, slightly ahead of the beat. Duration is approximately 4:05 at the indicated tempo.

Leonard Cohen's beautiful 'Hallelujah' carefully transcribed for cello or lower string ensemble. This arrangement is written for four cellos with an optional double bass part, but you could also omit cello 2 to form a cello trio. The cello 1 part has tenor clef in it (approx. Grade 6 standard), but there is an ossia for the highest section written an octave lower. The arrangement has a gentle sound, but the arpeggio cello 3 part is reminiscent of the Jeff Buckley version.
