I recently discovered Reynaldo Hahn via the superb soprano Veronique Gens' album Néère. She included in her album selections from Reynaldo Hahn's song setting of poems by Charles Marie René Leconte de Lisle called Études Latines. There are eighteen of these very enigmatic and fanciful poems about Greek or Latin gods and goddesses: Apollo, Venus, Lydia, Bacchus, Diane, Phoebe, Phyllis, Glycère, Naiads, Pyrrha, etc. Hahn set ten of these poems in an array of vocal settings: choral, solo male or female voices. For my song cycle I chose the remaining eight that Hahn did not use. I. Licymnie II. Glycère III. Hymne 01 IV. (sans titre) V. Hymne 02 VI. Pyrrha VII. Lydia VIII. Envoi.

I composed this piece as part of a larger song cycle, Colores mexicanos, which I wrote as part of an undergraduate thesis, Colores mexicanos: The Mexican Art Song and Setting Mexican Texts to Music (2016). This cycle explores various texts from various perspectives throughout Mexican history, culture, and society, while reflecting influences from Mexican folk and academic music within the composition. Si yo nunca... is the second piece in the cycle, and like the first, it features text from the Cantares mexicanos, written by Mexica authors during the beginning of the Spanish viceroyalty period in the 16th century. This text uses vague, abstract language to emphasize the idea that human culture never truly disappears, and it’s fitting for a state freshly defeated by another civilization. The musical setting features the Andulusian cadence, a compositional device frequently used in Latin American music, distorted across various octaves and in various figures, as the singer suggests that there is more after death, a fitting metaphor for an ancient yet very active culture that still pervades Mexican society today.

The third song, Colloque sentimental, was written in 2003 for Alison Smart and Katharine Durran’s New French Song project. It was as a result of having written one short song to words by Verlaine that I subsequently decided to set two further poems to make a group of three. All three were also set by Debussy: L’ombre des arbres and Chevaux de bois appear in Ariettes Oubliées, while Colloque sentimental belongs to Debussy’s second set of Fêtes Galantes. The poems I have grouped together are linked by the idea of three different landscapes. In the first, Verlaine precedes the words of his own sad, pale landscape with words from Cyrano de Bergerac about a nightingale who fears himself about to fall into a river and drown. In the second poem the landscape has been occupied by a fairground where men, women and children watch as the hobby-horses go round and round before night falls and the church tolls a passing-bell. The third poem takes us into an old park where two ghosts recall their past. The one wonders if the other remembers the happy days of their past lives, but the other doesn’t want to remember, barely acknowledging the closeness they once shared, seeing only that ‘hope has fled, defeated, towards the dark sky.’ I am very grateful to Roger Nichols and Dominique Mols for their advice with the setting of the French texts and with the translations. John Casken Colloque sentimental was first performed by Alison Smart and Katherine Durran at the Purcell Room in London on 13 July 2004.

Mein Freund!, Eva's aria from Richard Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg. Dramatic sopranos who love this aria no longer need to fear bringing it in for auditions, last-minute performing engagements, or other situations in which the pianist is unlikely to know this aria and may become rattled by the chaotic piano reductions in the currently available vocal scores. Pianists with limited practice time may now enjoy playing this aria comfortably as well. Because vocal line/orchestral doublings are characteristic of Wagner, those have been preserved in this edition. All Accessible Accompaniments, including this one, boast several unique features:1. No reduction ever requires stretches of over an octave, not including bass notes meant to be held or “fudged†with the pedal (though octaves may also contain chord tones within them). This reduces the amount of rearranging that smaller-handed pianists must already do. Obviously, further reworkings are to be expected and pianists should feel free to add to or modify what I’ve provided.2. I’ve included less essential, but potentially desirable additional voices/passages in cue-size noteheads so that pianists can easily see them, but know that they are not necessary in a “sink or swim†accompanying situation. Sopranos who love this aria no longer need to fear bringing it in for auditions, last-minute performing engagements, or other situations in which the pianist may have to sight-read from the often chaotic vocal score, particularly if the murmuring section after the standard audition cut, which is very poorly rendered in the standard reduction, is also being included. Pianists may now enjoy playing this aria comfortably, without risking strain/injury or audition-room chaos.This Accessible Accompaniment is more generous than standard audition cuts, ending just before L'enfant re-enters with j'ai peur. It is 91 measures in total and ideal for recitals as well. All Accessible Accompaniments, including this one, boast several unique features:1. These two pieces are based on texts by the great twentieth century poet Eugenio Montale, from Le occasioni and Ossi di seppia collections. The first Non recidere forbice tries to evoke the drama of the text through a melodic line with an articulate profile characterized by taglient intervallari jumps, and a harmony often scarce as thin and desolate is sometimes the poetic text. Antico sono ubriacato della voce is the second text, more extensive, on which the other lyric develops, characterized by the presence of an almost continuous rhythmic movement in the piano part in order to make the one, incessant and deep, of the waters of the sea , protagonist of this poetic song. There are numerous madrigalisms and musical devices designed to underline the expressive climate of each single text expression while trying to maintain a basic unity for the whole composition.
