My husband and I had known Richard and Karen from our time as fellow graduate students at the Yale School of Music; Richard had studied composition and Karen piano, both very talented musicians and lovely people, so I was touched to be asked and very happy to write Peace on Earth as a gift for their daughter Katie, who was graduating from Oberlin Conservatory. Katie patiently waited out the coronavirus pandemic and on April 16, 2023 she and pianist Nomin Samdan premiered Peace on Earth on her masters degree recital at the Bard College Conservatory, where she was wrapping up her studies in the Vocal Arts Program. She wrote about Peace on Earth in her recital program notes that, “Hall responds to Williams’ catalog of constellations through slowly shifting harmonies and smooth, swung rhythms. The composer imagines the night sky as though one is dreaming it, ‘...whether it’s really up there above us or just taking place within the sleeping person’s soul.’ Through this luscious song, we are invited to daydream collectively and to come into a more unified consciousness.â€.

Composer’s Note - Sifting the StarsIn 2015 I was commissioned by Sydney Philharmonia Choirs to create a Christmas show for kids. Being me, I decided that I wanted to make it a narrative show because I’m ambitious that way. It was called Cog in the Machine (a family Christmas tale with a twist) and alongside the carols was a gentle commentary on the commercialisation of the festive season, and how our priorities of family celebration are often overshadowed by the extravagance of gift giving.One of the main characters in the story is a smart, sassy teenage girl called Stella. She loves science, particularly astronomy (hence the name!) and it was therefore a family tradition for her to put the star on the top of the Christmas tree each year. This particular Christmas, she has a bit of a disagreement with her mother and as she’s putting the star on the tree, she goes into a kind of dream sequence, floating about the galaxies inside her head, trying to process her adolescent need for independence and protection in equal amounts. Janis Joplin (3’24)Compositional Notes I met Cuban-American Silvia Curbelo when we were both artists in residency at the Seaside Institute. When she shared a few of her poems I was immediately taken by the melodic flow of her words, the imagery and her strong delivery. W. S. Merwin has describe her work as …accomplished, daring, full of intelligence; it is the generous first manifestation of an authentic and original gift. This second set of songs from The Secret History of Water was composed for one of my private voice students, a coloratura soprano with excellent pitch retention and a secure range extension. I’m in love, I’m floating is a whimsical poem that captures the essence of being in love, acting foolishly and impulsively, yet somehow grounded in the knowledge that she is still capable of counting her options like black sheep. Last Call is my musical interpretation of Curbelo’s enigmatic poem contemplating different personalities in a bar. In the third song, Janis Joplin, here is another whimsical, yet deeply touching poem with nostalgia as the key component.I loved including a quote from Me and Bobby McGee. Louise Labé (1524-1566) wrote 24 sonnets.  I read somewhere (probably wikipedia) she was inspired by Francesco Petrach (1304-1374) when she wrote her sonnets, so much so that the first sonnet is in Italian.  In 2014 I wrote a song cycle of poems by Gaspara Stampa who was a contemporary of Labé.  Both poets wrote about the suffering and longing due to unrequited love.  Of the 24 I chose seven.1. Sonnet 1 ... Non havria Ulysse o qualqu'atro mai 2. Sonnet 2 ... O beaus yeux bruns3. Sonnet 3 ... Deus ou trois fois bienheureus la retour4. Sonnet 8 ... Je vis, je meurs: je me brule et me noye5. Composer’s Note - The BirdsI lived for a couple of years in a little top floor Art Deco apartment in Sydney’s Kings Cross. There were always birds sitting on my window sill because of the huge Jacaranda tree outside. I was at a bit of a crossroads in my life at that time, and would spend at least an hour daily walking in the neighbourhood, along those twisting, sloping streets and slowly eroding sandstone staircases so typical of Sydney’s harbourside suburbs. On the wall by such a staircase very close to my home was a tiny red spray painted bird with little music notes emanating from his beak. His was a constant presence in my life, I really rather liked him.Birds seemed to be making appearances everywhere in my life at that time, which I took as some kind of message from the universe. I was reading quite a lot of Christina Rossetti that year too, enjoying her writings about birds and all that they symbolised for her; beauty and sadness, hope and joy. There was a quiet optimism in her words, sometimes veiled but always present, which propelled me to write this song cycle T​ he Birds.​-- Sally Whitwell

The third song, Colloque sentimental, was written in 2003 for Alison Smart and Katharine Durran’s New French Song project. It was as a result of having written one short song to words by Verlaine that I subsequently decided to set two further poems to make a group of three. All three were also set by Debussy: L’ombre des arbres and Chevaux de bois appear in Ariettes Oubliées, while Colloque sentimental belongs to Debussy’s second set of Fêtes Galantes. The poems I have grouped together are linked by the idea of three different landscapes. In the first, Verlaine precedes the words of his own sad, pale landscape with words from Cyrano de Bergerac about a nightingale who fears himself about to fall into a river and drown. In the second poem the landscape has been occupied by a fairground where men, women and children watch as the hobby-horses go round and round before night falls and the church tolls a passing-bell. The third poem takes us into an old park where two ghosts recall their past. The one wonders if the other remembers the happy days of their past lives, but the other doesn’t want to remember, barely acknowledging the closeness they once shared, seeing only that ‘hope has fled, defeated, towards the dark sky.’ I am very grateful to Roger Nichols and Dominique Mols for their advice with the setting of the French texts and with the translations. John Casken Colloque sentimental was first performed by Alison Smart and Katherine Durran at the Purcell Room in London on 13 July 2004.

Halevi Songs is a 3-movement song cycle, composed in 2002. It is a setting of three poems (in English translation of the original Hebrew) of Judah Halevi, who was a Jewish scholar and poet who lived in Spain in the Middle Ages. The three movements are I. The Mirror, II. Do the Tears Know?, and III. Calm After the Storm. Each is just under three minutes. The total duration of the piece is between 8.5 and 9 minutes. The audio clip is from the third movement, in a performance of the sextet version of this piece. A complete recording is available upon request from the composer at ebrill@hcc.edu. The performers are Dianne Smith (soprano), Janet Polvino (flute), Isabelle Boggs (clarinet), Bob Ferrier (guitar), Craig Bitterman (percussion), and Joyce Crouch (piano). It may be performed with just piano accompaniment as well. Composer's Notes: The translation of the first poem, The Mirror, is by the 19th century American poet Emma Lazarus, most famous for her familiar words engraved on the Statue of Liberty: Give me your tired, your poorâ?¦ There has been some interesting academic discussion concerning this poem. It is generally attributed to Halevi, but some scholars now believe it may have been written by someone else. (I have also seen the translation attributed to someone else.) The second poem, Do the Tears Know? was originally a tombstone inscription for one of Haleviâ??s friends. This setting was written to honor my father, Harold Allan Brill, who passed away in January, 2000. The third poem, Calm After the Storm, is actually the second half of a longer poem about a sea voyage. The three songs are meant to be performed continuously, without a break in between. The text is a poem by Isaac Watts (1674-1748), the English hymn-writer better known for such traditional favorites as Joy to the World or When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. Appearing in 1715 under the title, Hush! My Dear, Lie Still and Slumber, the lullaby portrays a mother singing to her baby of the serenity and comfort her baby enjoys, contrasted with the bleak conditions in which the baby Jesus was born. As she sings, the mother figuratively takes her child to the cross and expresses her longing to see the child come to know the Savior who died there. In this setting for solo soprano, accompanied by piano and cello, there are moments of tenderness, interspersed with interludes of intense emotion, finished with a tranquil conclusion.
