Moments in which, induced by adrenalin, the blood pressure rises. Blood vessels which seem to constrict, pump enormous quantities of blood the pressure of which might make one believe that the head is going to explode. In The Judgment, an innocent opening story leads to one of the most unusual showdowns in world literature: The beloved father sentences his son to death by drowning; the son immediately obeys since his life, his existence almost explodes, becomes blurred, dissolves at the moment the judgment is pronounced. For me, the 'self' driving him – I imagine this as a high sound in the inner ear – could only be a soprano. This is why the actual 'fall' has turned out to be clear, almost friendly and why Georg only seems to want to breathe a soft and quiet 'Dear parents, I have always loved you' during the fall while no longer keeping the singing tone, shortly before death, almost casually, takes hold of him. English â?¢ Spanish.Four Arms, Two Necks is a setting of a 17th century anonymous poem. The timelessness of the words in the love poem struck me and I set it to music, later dedicating the song to two friends, Anda and Bill Winters, in celebration of a wedding anniversary. Orpheus is from William Shakespeareâ??s play The Life of King Henry VIII. Between 1996-2000, I composed and produced the music for audio recordings of all 38 Shakespeare plays in the Complete Arkangel Shakespeare collection. This song from the play was originally written for lute accompaniment and I later arranged the lute part for piano. Agua, Dónde Vas? is a setting of a poem by Federico GarcÃa Lorca. In 1998, I visited Barcelona to renew with a dear friend, Lucia from an illustrious family of flamenco musicians and dancers. We had met in 1985 when I first visited Granada and was hanging out in the flamenco tablaoâ??s of the Albaicin and Granada proper. Through Lucia I got a glimpse of a world in which Lorcaâ??s poetry vibrated daily and as casually as the music, songs and rhythms that peppered and punctuated conversations, discussions, exchanges of opinions, mealtimes in homes and bars and the precious moments of just hanging out. © 2023 Dominique Le Gendre.

Appearing in 1715 under the title, Hush! My Dear, Lie Still and Slumber, the lullaby portrays a mother singing to her baby of the serenity and comfort her baby enjoys, contrasted with the bleak conditions in which the baby Jesus was born. As she sings, the mother figuratively takes her child to the cross and expresses her longing to see the child come to know the Savior who died there. In this setting for solo soprano, accompanied by piano and cello, there are moments of tenderness, interspersed with interludes of intense emotion, finished with a tranquil conclusion.

Her poems are understated and compact. Her love of Nature focuses on small things- birds, bees, meadows and a pond. In creating the musical settings, the composer (herself a New Englander) endeavored to capture the spirit of the poetry, and of the poet, with songs diverse in style, and concise in form. Everything from romance to frogs is explored, briefly. Composer’s Note - Warm Where Snowflakes LieThrough my music, I try to bring to people a sense of optimism about the world. Music has the power to uplift, to exalt, to fill people with joy and hope, so I am drawn to texts that do a similar thing. Christina Rossetti’s poem ​The Key-Note​ has this optimism, even with a gentle sting in the proverbial tail. She appreciated that everything has a season, that life happens in cycles, that in the face of the darkest Winter there is always the hope of Spring, a hope made real by the appearance of the red-breasted robin in the snow. This song is for anyone who has ever felt hopeless, disenfranchised, or unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel.-- Sally Whitwell
