English â?¢ Spanish.Four Arms, Two Necks is a setting of a 17th century anonymous poem. The timelessness of the words in the love poem struck me and I set it to music, later dedicating the song to two friends, Anda and Bill Winters, in celebration of a wedding anniversary. Orpheus is from William Shakespeareâ??s play The Life of King Henry VIII. Between 1996-2000, I composed and produced the music for audio recordings of all 38 Shakespeare plays in the Complete Arkangel Shakespeare collection. This song from the play was originally written for lute accompaniment and I later arranged the lute part for piano. Agua, Dónde Vas? is a setting of a poem by Federico GarcÃa Lorca. In 1998, I visited Barcelona to renew with a dear friend, Lucia from an illustrious family of flamenco musicians and dancers. We had met in 1985 when I first visited Granada and was hanging out in the flamenco tablaoâ??s of the Albaicin and Granada proper. Through Lucia I got a glimpse of a world in which Lorcaâ??s poetry vibrated daily and as casually as the music, songs and rhythms that peppered and punctuated conversations, discussions, exchanges of opinions, mealtimes in homes and bars and the precious moments of just hanging out. © 2023 Dominique Le Gendre.

The text is a poem by Isaac Watts (1674-1748), the English hymn-writer better known for such traditional favorites as Joy to the World or When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. Appearing in 1715 under the title, Hush! My Dear, Lie Still and Slumber, the lullaby portrays a mother singing to her baby of the serenity and comfort her baby enjoys, contrasted with the bleak conditions in which the baby Jesus was born. As she sings, the mother figuratively takes her child to the cross and expresses her longing to see the child come to know the Savior who died there. In this setting for solo soprano, accompanied by piano and cello, there are moments of tenderness, interspersed with interludes of intense emotion, finished with a tranquil conclusion.

I’m in love, I’m floating is a whimsical poem that captures the essence of being in love, acting foolishly and impulsively, yet somehow grounded in the knowledge that she is still capable of counting her options like black sheep. Last Call is my musical interpretation of Curbelo’s enigmatic poem contemplating different personalities in a bar. In the third song, Janis Joplin, here is another whimsical, yet deeply touching poem with nostalgia as the key component.I loved including a quote from Me and Bobby McGee. Louise Labé (1524-1566) wrote 24 sonnets.  I read somewhere (probably wikipedia) she was inspired by Francesco Petrach (1304-1374) when she wrote her sonnets, so much so that the first sonnet is in Italian.  In 2014 I wrote a song cycle of poems by Gaspara Stampa who was a contemporary of Labé.  Both poets wrote about the suffering and longing due to unrequited love.  Of the 24 I chose seven.1. Sonnet 1 ... Non havria Ulysse o qualqu'atro mai 2. Sonnet 2 ... O beaus yeux bruns3. Sonnet 3 ... Deus ou trois fois bienheureus la retour4. Sonnet 8 ... Je vis, je meurs: je me brule et me noye5.
