A tour de force that, I hope, encompasses the full excitement and dynamic range of the original. Not for the faint-hearted, and not a quick learn. Also check the range, as it ascends to C5 in the top down to a rumbling D2 in the bass. However, I run along the lines that if I can get to the top and bottom, then dedicated sections will also be able to do so.  Complex splits in parts after the key change make this challenging to pull off, and adding in the body percussion makes this a real showstopper in a festival or competition. Melody bounces between top tenor and baritone, with harmonies provided by seconds and bass.

THE PARTING BEFORE THE BATTLE was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) an Irish writer, poet and lyricist celebrated for his Irish Melodies. He is best remembered for the lyrics of The Minstrel Boy and The Last Rose of Summer and one of the first recognized champions of freedom in Ireland. As an impressionable young man with a quick Irish temper, the execution of a close college friend during the United Irishmen's Rebellion aroused in Moore a patriotic fervor that provided his greatest literary inspiration. Thomas Moore's best known work included a brilliant biographical masterpiece taken from the confidential memoirs of Lord Byron. His own Memoirs, Journal, and Correspondence are an invaluable social record of life in England and Ireland during the first half of the nineteenth century. James W. Knox, composer, depicts a battle of the brave Irish men and women who have courageously fought against those who seek destruction. The chorus should sing with great boldness and display a sense of honorable pride. To create a dramatic affect, James also used Erse or Gaelic with an ancient proverb, Nà neart go cur le chéile. (There is no strength without unity.) This text is used throughout the piece in addition to the poem. The proverb is set to the melody of Dies irae , which is a famous Gregorian chant dating back to the 13th century and is found as part of the Latin sequence in the Requiem. .

Rather than compose on the computer as I usually do, I wrote by hand as I determined the best four-part canonic treatment for each of the phrases of the chant. Composing this was akin to assembling a puzzle, both in mindset (this note fits best here) and addictive quality (need to finish this now!). Originally conceived as a short organ piece, I quickly chose to add the English text from the Hymnal 1982 then text directly from the Liber Usualis, a Catholic book of Gregorian chants commonly used until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). This piece is similar in style to an Italian Renaissance canzona or early German Baroque kanon. It should be performed with performance practice of those eras in mind, including lifts after dotted notes, metric accents, and minimal vibrato, especially at cadences. Lines that end in a melisma should be performed by singing the final vowel and placing the consonant at the release of the final melisma note. The first verse may be sung in unison or as a solo as printed below. The verses may be sung in alternatum (odd verses, printed below: solo chant, even verses: choir). There is a new modulation in the middle that gives a nice lift to the arrangement. The arrangement is not too difficult at all and most groups would be able to learn it very quickly. The arrangement is a cappella with the singers snapping throughout. But a Bass and Drums could be easily added to give an even cooler groove to it (the Bass could just double the lowest vocal part). Rather than compose on the computer as I usually do, I wrote by hand as I determined the best four-part canonic treatment for each of the phrases of the chant. Composing this was akin to assembling a puzzle, both in mindset (this note fits best here) and addictive quality (need to finish this now!). Originally conceived as a short organ piece, I quickly chose to add the English text from the Hymnal 1982 then text directly from the Liber Usualis, a Catholic book of Gregorian chants commonly used until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). This piece is similar in style to an Italian Renaissance canzona or early German Baroque kanon. It should be performed with performance practice of those eras in mind, including lifts after dotted notes, metric accents, and minimal vibrato, especially at cadences. Lines that end in a melisma should be performed by singing the final vowel and placing the consonant at the release of the final melisma note. The first verse may be sung in unison or as a solo as printed below. The verses may be sung in alternatum (odd verses printed below: solo chant, even verses: choir).
