The song tells the Biblical story of Mary of Bethany and her distraught pleas to Jesus to raise her brother Lazarus from the dead. Other narratives relate to The Exodus and the Passage of the Red Sea, with the chorus proclaiming Pharaoh's army got drown-ded, and to God's rainbow covenant to Noah after the Great Flood. Mary Hopkin's 1968 debut single of Those Were the Days, which was produced by Paul McCartney of the Beatles, became a number one hit on the UK Singles Chart. In the 8th century, a monk named Dallan Forgaill wrote the Irish poem, Rop tú mo Baile (Be Thou my Vision), to remember and honor the faith that St. Patrick had shown in his defiance of King Logaire of Tara’s decree three centuries earlier. His poetry lived on as a part of the Irish monastic tradition for centuries until, in the early 20th century, Mary Elizabeth Byrne translated the poem into English, and in 1912, Eleanor Hull versified the text into what is now the lyrics of a well-loved hymn. The music SLANE is an ancient Irish folk tune which became a hymn tune when it was arranged by David Evans and set to the Irish hymn Be Thou My Vision in 1927.
