It is a song of lost love that starts off with wistfulness, moves through anguish, and ends with feeling that hope is not all lost. Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1351). 8.27 x 11.7 inches.In 2017, I was commissioned by the Svanholm Singers to write a work for inclusion in a concert marking 70 years since the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Choosing a text was difficult. I came across upon a poem by American poet Maya Angelou, but it struck me as being too powerful and emotional for the music I was writing to carry it; everything I composed sounded banal next to Angelou's words. I soon realized that I could use silence to enhance the text, rather than heaping layers and layers of music upon it. Silence is both terrifying and serious - in a sense, it is the only adequate counterpoint to the poetry. So, I decided to build the piece on silence. Though the beginning of the piece is the opposite of silence - a scream of desperation - I followed that outburst by cutting the poem's stanzas into single words, repeated in a different order each time, almost in the manner of a mantra. Finally, they end up in the right order and suddenly the words take on their rightful meaning. I hope, in this way, the music is equally powerful as the words. Son to Mother has been well-received and has gone on to become one of the most widely performed pieces I have written. It has been performed at various festivals and in various countries, including Taiwan, France and China - where it only just made it past the government censors.Also available for mixed choir.Henrik Dahlgren is a Swedish composer, born 1991. He has been studying at the Academy Of Music in Malmo with Prof. Rolf Martinsson and the Royal College Of Music in London with Dr. Haris Kittos. Henrik started his musical career as a drummer and has ever since worked in a very wide range of different genres and styles, both as a performer and as a composer.

On Christmas Day is a medley of I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day and I Saw Three Ships by Mark R Lewis. John Baptiste Calkin wrote the music for I Heard the Bells in 1872 as an adaptation of the earlier poem Christmas Bells by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I Saw Three Ships is an English carol thought to originate from the 17th century, though the lyrics used is most modern arrangements come from later published versions.This arrangement is intended to be performed by TTBB divisi choir and accompanied by a 3-5 octave handbell choir. All four voice parts pass the melody back and forth and are featured at different times and explore different vocal and accompaniment styles throughout the piece. Most intermediate choirs should be able to perform this piece, although the bass 2s should be able to sing down to a D2 (there are optional notes if this is too low). The handbell part is not particularly difficult but is active across the whole ensemble and uses mallets through one of the middle verses. There are also several key changes that will require quick bell changes or sharing of bells. It is also worth noting that I Heard the Bells is in 4/4 and I Saw Three Ships is in 6/8.This download includes a piano and choir score for when handbells are not an option as well as the handbell sheet music. Handbells are the preferred accompaniment, although it will still sound good with just piano.

Ska/pop band Madness recorded this song in 1981 and it has become a firm favourite, especially at weddings and anniversary parties. This arrangement avoids the obvious piano chords in the vocal parts, focusing more on melodic polyphony. It is not too difficult to put together and has exciting parts for all singers. I've also done optional parts for the sax/guitar solo in the middle; these are provided in C (treble and bass clefs), B flat and E flat to cater for almost any solo instrument you have available to play it (possibly a choir member?). This solo should be loud and raucous! The piece still works perfectly well without, however. It is great to perform and to listen to for the audience. Enjoy!

An easy going three-part vocal arrangement of the well-known classic Bye Bye Blackbird. The vocal arrangement is straightforward, with a little rhythmic variety added for interest. The piano accompaniment is lightly swung and hints at the 1920's heritage of the song.Originally written for performance by a male voice choir, the parts are all easily accessible for use in SSA too.
