And though the music is a little more meditative than many tunes, it is still in keeping with the original expression that helped give rise to the hymn: “Had I a thousand tongues, I would praise Him with them all!” After the piano and flute introduction, the new tune is lightly harmonized in both stanzas, but each has it’s own unique voicing at My gracious Master and You break the power, respectively. The brief flute/C instrument solo can add a lot to the piece, but an optional cut from the end of m.41 to m.59 and on to the key change could be offered in the score. After the key change the melody returns in unison, followed by a worshipful close. This TTBB arrangement captures the original song's energy with driving rhythmic patterns that interlock to create the illusion of a larger group from as few as 8-10 singers. With accessibility and achievability in mind, this arrangement is a quick learn for most any mens a cappella group. It sits comfortably within the middle of each sections range allowing for a strong and confident performance every time. The counter melody during the bridge section sets it apart from other run of the mill arrangements, making it impressive and unique to the audience despite its accessible and easy nature for the singers. Great for groups starting out and looking for something thats a quick learn, but also a great addition to bolster the programs of more advanced groups! There are many arrangements of this piece out there, but this one speaks for itself and was a favorite at many of my own groups performances. Enjoy!

It has been used in all sorts of contexts, from a goodbye song on American Idol and Coca Cola commercials to the 2008 US Presidential election. THE PARTING BEFORE THE BATTLE was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) an Irish writer, poet and lyricist celebrated for his Irish Melodies. He is best remembered for the lyrics of The Minstrel Boy and The Last Rose of Summer and one of the first recognized champions of freedom in Ireland. As an impressionable young man with a quick Irish temper, the execution of a close college friend during the United Irishmen's Rebellion aroused in Moore a patriotic fervor that provided his greatest literary inspiration. Thomas Moore's best known work included a brilliant biographical masterpiece taken from the confidential memoirs of Lord Byron. His own Memoirs, Journal, and Correspondence are an invaluable social record of life in England and Ireland during the first half of the nineteenth century. James W. Knox, composer, depicts a battle of the brave Irish men and women who have courageously fought against those who seek destruction. The chorus should sing with great boldness and display a sense of honorable pride. To create a dramatic affect, James also used Erse or Gaelic with an ancient proverb, Nà neart go cur le chéile. (There is no strength without unity.) This text is used throughout the piece in addition to the poem. The proverb is set to the melody of Dies irae , which is a famous Gregorian chant dating back to the 13th century and is found as part of the Latin sequence in the Requiem. .
