Published by Paul A. Jorg (A0.522449). Here is a bit of history from Hymnary,org of the composer, Jesse Brown Pounds, a young lady from a suburb of Cleveland, OH. She was not in good health when she was a child so she was taught at home. She began to write verses for the Cleveland newspapers and religious weeklies when she was fifteen. After an editor of a collection of her verses noted that some of them would be well suited for church or Sunday School hymns, J. H. Fillmore wrote to her asking her to write some hymns for a book he was publishing. She then regularly wrote hymns for Fillmore Brothers. She married Rev. John E. Pounds, a pastor of the Central Christian Church in Indianapolis in1896, and one year after marriage, wrote this hymn. The arrangement is for 4 part male harmony (TTBB) a cappella. .

Its beginnings are suspect: Is this a variation of the African-American spiritual “The Golden Chariot” or is this a parody of a Salvation Army revivalist hymn? The dilemma: How to get a dead man’s body back home while at sea. Why preserve his corpse in a barrel of rum! Written as a companion piece to the composer's setting of Simple Gifts (also commissioned by Cantus four years earlier) this is an arrangement of this iconic folk hymn that sounds traditionally American, immediately recognizable, and not overly arranged, while still having something fresh to say musically using the sonorous sounds of men’s voices.Knowing that Cantus planned to place How Can I Keep From Singing? at the end of their tour program, the final bars were fitted with an extended cadence to bring their staged performances to a satisfying and heartfelt close.

This year, my grandmother, Bobbie Kay Turner, celebrates her ninetieth birthday. In planning for the celebration, I was stumped about what to give her. I wanted it to be unique, something no one else would think of. Finally, I had the idea to compose a new song. I contacted my friend, James, and he was immediately on board. In fact, he had the first draft of a new poem back to me within the day!  When my grandmother (“Mimi†to her grandkids) was 36 years old, she and my grandfather moved to Cayman Brac, Cayman Islands with their six children to serve as missionaries; and she has been there since. So, when I think of Mimi, I can’t help but think of the many times I’ve sat and watched the ocean with her. Knowing this, James created a text that depicts life as a ship’s journey across the sea. Throughout the song, you will catch snippets of my grandmother’s favorite hymn Amazing Grace which, like Horizon, is a song about a journey. My grandmother has lived a full, long life and continues to joyfully live each day. James’s beautiful lyrics perfectly capture her journey, particularly the final stanza. Mimi is known for being full of energy and abounding in love for those around her, and she never stops telling anyone who will listen about the divine light of an eternal home. –    Shelton, October 18, 2022.
