On Christmas Day is a medley of I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day and I Saw Three Ships by Mark R Lewis. John Baptiste Calkin wrote the music for I Heard the Bells in 1872 as an adaptation of the earlier poem Christmas Bells by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I Saw Three Ships is an English carol thought to originate from the 17th century, though the lyrics used is most modern arrangements come from later published versions.This arrangement is intended to be performed by TTBB divisi choir and accompanied by a 3-5 octave handbell choir. All four voice parts pass the melody back and forth and are featured at different times and explore different vocal and accompaniment styles throughout the piece. Most intermediate choirs should be able to perform this piece, although the bass 2s should be able to sing down to a D2 (there are optional notes if this is too low). The handbell part is not particularly difficult but is active across the whole ensemble and uses mallets through one of the middle verses. There are also several key changes that will require quick bell changes or sharing of bells. It is also worth noting that I Heard the Bells is in 4/4 and I Saw Three Ships is in 6/8.This download includes a piano and choir score for when handbells are not an option as well as the handbell sheet music. Handbells are the preferred accompaniment, although it will still sound good with just piano.

This arrangement is scored for a tenor soloist plus TTBB a cappella accompaniment. My own a cappella group performed it for many years and it was one of our most requested numbers. We often closed our performances with it. It's great for school or collegiate groups, and very easy to learn and sing. The feel of this arrangement is much like Geoff Muldaur's setting with guitar on The Secret Handshake.This song dates back 1o 1919, but Brumley codified it in 1937 with his arrangement in Favorite Radio Songs. Woodie Guthrie loved the song, but created his own set of more secular lyrics. This arrangement bridges both settings, with Woody's lyrics for the concluding verse, which nonetheless fit the gospel message quite well.

And, since both the anthems and contemporary worship songs of today tend to neglect the second coming of Christ here’s an offering from the spiritual/anthem/jazz confluence.Angel, Blow that Trumpet is based on I Corinthians 13:50-57 and I Thessalonians 4:13-18. The style? Well, let’s call it “Natalie Sleeth meets New Orleans jazz!”You’re almost sure to find the voicing very approachable, yet thrilling for SATB (TTBB and SSA also available).The accompaniment is a dixie-land styling originally conceived for piano, string bass/fretless electric bass/standard bass guitar (it would be fun to have someone do it on the “big bass viol”), Bb clarinet, trombone and Bb trumpet. These parts are included with the choral score.Above all, it's fairly easy to learn and fun to sing!The clarinet and trombone parts are a lot of fun and the trumpet part features an easily playable/adaptable ending that nails the piece (actually the lower version is really nice). Plus, with the single exception of swinging the eighth note pairs, there’s no improvisation required here. The version of Beethoven's 'Drei Equale' for male choir was added to the original's first and the last movement by Ignaz Seyfried, a friend of Beethoven. The second movement was performed on a later moment, but the link between the instrumental version (with text by Frans Grillparzer) was not made. I have taken the freedom to put these two together in this score, and transposed it one major second down to make it fit smoothly in between the other two movements. The first and last movement also contained a text in Latin, but since the second movement was only available in German, I also used the German texts for the other movements.

When I first read this text (No. 14 of the odes) I was struck by how prescient the words were, fitting not only the needs and aspirations of early Christians but the cry of hearts today.In keeping with the tone and historicity of the words I chose a musical setting reminiscent of Gregorian chant, albeit with richer harmonies. The mood is contemplative, prayerful, and could be used to effect in many types of worship services.
