In this version I have musicalized the corresponding text to the responsory, but adding the alleluia, which is typical of the antiphon. The motet passes in a pastoral atmosphere beholding the birth of Jesus. With this work, I have finally put music to the same set of texts used by Francis Poulenc for his Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël. The whole set is a tribute to his memory and his powerful influence on my training as a composer.

Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1351). 8.27 x 11.7 inches.In 2017, I was commissioned by the Svanholm Singers to write a work for inclusion in a concert marking 70 years since the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Choosing a text was difficult. I came across upon a poem by American poet Maya Angelou, but it struck me as being too powerful and emotional for the music I was writing to carry it; everything I composed sounded banal next to Angelou's words. I soon realized that I could use silence to enhance the text, rather than heaping layers and layers of music upon it. Silence is both terrifying and serious - in a sense, it is the only adequate counterpoint to the poetry. So, I decided to build the piece on silence. Though the beginning of the piece is the opposite of silence - a scream of desperation - I followed that outburst by cutting the poem's stanzas into single words, repeated in a different order each time, almost in the manner of a mantra. Finally, they end up in the right order and suddenly the words take on their rightful meaning. I hope, in this way, the music is equally powerful as the words. Son to Mother has been well-received and has gone on to become one of the most widely performed pieces I have written. It has been performed at various festivals and in various countries, including Taiwan, France and China - where it only just made it past the government censors.Also available for mixed choir.Henrik Dahlgren is a Swedish composer, born 1991. He has been studying at the Academy Of Music in Malmo with Prof. Rolf Martinsson and the Royal College Of Music in London with Dr. Haris Kittos. Henrik started his musical career as a drummer and has ever since worked in a very wide range of different genres and styles, both as a performer and as a composer.

It was included on their 1982 album Toto IV, and released as a single on September 30, 1982. It reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart on February 5, 1983 (the band's only number one there), and number three on the UK Singles Chart the same month.The initial idea and words for the song came from David Paich. Jeff Porcaro explains the idea behind the song: a white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past.Paich said: At the beginning of the '80s I watched a late night documentary on TV about all the terrible death and suffering of the people in Africa. It both moved and appalled me, and the pictures just wouldn't leave my head. I tried to imagine how I'd feel about if I was there and what I'd do.In 2015, Paich explained the song is about a man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance. In 2018, Paich explained the song is about a person flying in to meet a lonely missionary. As a child, Paich attended a Catholic school. Several of the teachers had done missionary work in Africa, and this became the inspiration behind the line I bless the rains down in Africa.About the arrangementI have tried to keep as much of the original material used by Toto as possible, within the confines of a male voice choir arrangement. The arrangement is for TTBB and piano and can include sound effects made by the choir at the beginning to imitate rain and a thunderstorm. A bongo/djembe drum can be played through the choruses to add more of an African percussive feel. The premise behind the piece is that the first tenor represents a boy realizing that his childhood is fleeting away. The other sections represent his collective internal self in the form of past, present, and future, offering consoling words towards the boy. This piece is to be driven with passion and emotion, as the premise is something most listeners will find connections to in their own lives. A Bridge Between an Ocean is a great piece for an advanced men's group and would work well in any classical contemporary performance setting. This piece may also be appropriate for advanced high school and collegiate level groups. It is suggested that a pianist sit in rehearsals (not for performance) to help the members of the choir learn their parts.

Little could he know how industrialism, urbanisation, exploitation and a general lack of respect would come to be a threat to Mother Earth. When we hear the nightingale, the cuckoo, and the rumbling of thunder in Beethoven's sixth symphony, the aim of the composer is to express his emotions with regard to these sounds of nature rather than imitate them (Mehr Empfindung als Malerei!). Yet the Pastoral Symphony became a model for 19th century programme music composers who wished to renew the symphonic format with storytelling and a freer artistic idiom. The vocal work Det forlorade paradiset (The lost paradise) makes reference to Beethoven's ontologically anchored love for Creation, but also to the fundamental tension between the idyllic and encroaching threats, the very factors that give the Pastoral Symphony its richness and inevitability. The lyrics have nothing to do with John Milton's famous epos Paradise Lost, they foretell an approaching apocalypse created by mankind in this age of pollution and climate change. The choral text consists of fragments of Schiller's Ode an die Freude (used by LvB in his 9th Symphony). A few quotes by Beethoven will be recited as well.The basic principal of this composition is to present soothing parallel - tonally based - streams of nature sounds and idyllic surroundings with the gathering of ominous clouds of approaching disaster: ferocious fires, torrents of rain and stormy winds (where the singers make use of clusters, chanting, growl, stamping their feet, etc). Doch mehr Empfindung als Malerei! (emotion rather than mere imitation). A nod or two to Mr. Beethoven by way of droning and using chromatic runs. The performance can be choreographed for extra impact, but it is equally possible to perform the music as a concert piece. - Kjell Perder.

The initial idea for this song came from a point in a sermon (in June of 2020) by a pastor at my church (who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty 😊).  The point was that we can’t get to heaven by following the Law.  Only the Gospel can do that.  Therefore, the song is a Gospel song, even though the word “gospel†never appears in it.The song opens with the statement that the Law can’t “save your soulâ€.  It also points out that the Law can’t do miracles (like physically healing the body).  The song also addresses what the Law CAN do.  The song also alludes to a game (croquet) and a food (cinnamon toast) to demonstrate that neither a “Rule book†nor a “Recipe Book†can get us to heaven.  These allusions are a bit humorous and unexpected and therefore fit well in the genre of the Barbershop Quartet style.).

She was not in good health when she was a child so she was taught at home. She began to write verses for the Cleveland newspapers and religious weeklies when she was fifteen. After an editor of a collection of her verses noted that some of them would be well suited for church or Sunday School hymns, J. H. Fillmore wrote to her asking her to write some hymns for a book he was publishing. She then regularly wrote hymns for Fillmore Brothers. She married Rev. John E. Pounds, a pastor of the Central Christian Church in Indianapolis in1896, and one year after marriage, wrote this hymn. The arrangement is for 4 part male harmony (TTBB) a cappella. .
