These three dramatic but humorous episodes in the life of the great king, to texts by Thackeray and the composer, tell us first of all how the elderly King Canute was tiring of life as, no longer young, he even yawned while his favourite male voice choir was performing. The second movement tells of all the victories he had won - but, as the third movement tells us, there was one thing left to do - conquer the sea!  Sadly, however, the sea disobeyed his commands, and 'King Canute is dead and gone, but the legend still lives on'. The story is untrue, of course, but if it happened, though it probably didn't, it would have been in the vicinity of the Battle of Ashingdon, near to the town of South Woodham Ferrers, Essex, UK - where the songs were first performed by the South Woodham Ferrers Male Voice Choir. Khe Sanh (named after the Vietnam War's Battle of Khe Sanh) was written by Don Walker, the pianist for the Australian rock band Cold Chisel. It tells about an Australian Vietnam veteran trying to deal with his return to civilian life – womanising, post traumatic stress disorder, drug addiction, working on oil rigs and flying helicopters, travelling the world in search of answers. It is a life, he says, that only other vets (veterans) would understand.Released in May 1978, the song achieved only modest success on the national charts at the time, but did reach No. 4 in Cold Chisel's home town of Adelaide. In 2001, APRA, the Australasian music industry's peak body, listed Khe Sanh at number eight in a poll of all-time best Australian songs. In November 2014, the song was added to the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia registry of historically, culturally and aesthetically significant sound recordings.Khe Sanh still receives strong airplay on Australian radio stations with a classic rock format.This arrangement for male choir (TTBB) features a piano accompaniment with guitar chords.

Published by Jonathan Kilhams (A0.943042). About the piece Can't Help Falling in Love is a 1961 song recorded by American singer Elvis Presley for the album Blue Hawaii (1961). It was written by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss and published by Gladys Music, Inc. (The melody is based on Plaisir d'amour, a popular French love song composed in 1784 by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini). The song was initially written for a woman as Can't Help Falling in Love with Him, which explains the first and third line ending on in and sin rather than words rhyming with you. Can't Help Falling in Love was featured in Presley's 1961 film Blue Hawaii. During the following four decades, it has been recorded by numerous other artists, including Bob Dylan on his 1973 album Dylan, Tom Smothers, Swedish pop group A-Teens, and the British reggae group UB40, whose 1993 version topped the U.S. and UK charts. Elvis Presley's version of the song topped the British charts in 1962, spending four weeks at no. 1. The single is certified Platinum by the RIAA, for US sales in excess of one million copies. In the United States, the song peaked at No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 behind Joey Dee and the Starliters' Peppermint Twist and went to No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart for six weeks.About the arrangement This arrangement was inspired by the Elvis Presley version in 1962 and also the Pentatonix version recorded in 2017. It has been arranged for choirs that like to perform off by heart as the verse and chorus harmony are the same with very slight additions. Mark R Lewis #1090864. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1516691). The text for “Where Is Hope?” is adapted from the Lamentations Chapter 3 and is an expression of hopelessness, almost depression. The text starts out with the singer feeling lost, alone, and in pain. As the song progresses, the singer remembers God’s promises to always help and be with us. By the end of the song, the singer has regained hope and is triumphant and comforted. First and foremost, the music is very much intended to support the lyrical content of this song.Throughout the song, the key switches from major to minor (both parallel and relative) quite frequently. The piece starts with a very free section with almost no tempo alternating between just voices and simple piano accompaniment. The middle sections have stricter tempo and more active piano accompaniment and the final section increases in speed and excitement with piano truly accompanying the voices instead of just mostly mirroring them. Throughout the piece, meter always follows word stress so there are a surprising number of time signature changes with lyrical clarity always being more important than strict meter. All that said, the rhythms are not too difficult throughout the song and while there are some dissonant harmonies, the musical lines themselves should be singable by most intermediate choirs. The most challenging voice part is probably the tenor 1 line which spends a lot of time in the higher ranges. There are a few optional parts for the tenor 1s that will truly test the range of the singers.

And, since both the anthems and contemporary worship songs of today tend to neglect the second coming of Christ here’s an offering from the spiritual/anthem/jazz confluence.Angel, Blow that Trumpet is based on I Corinthians 13:50-57 and I Thessalonians 4:13-18. The style? Well, let’s call it “Natalie Sleeth meets New Orleans jazz!”You’re almost sure to find the voicing very approachable, yet thrilling for SATB (TTBB and SSA also available).The accompaniment is a dixie-land styling originally conceived for piano, string bass/fretless electric bass/standard bass guitar (it would be fun to have someone do it on the “big bass viol”), Bb clarinet, trombone and Bb trumpet. These parts are included with the choral score.Above all, it's fairly easy to learn and fun to sing!The clarinet and trombone parts are a lot of fun and the trumpet part features an easily playable/adaptable ending that nails the piece (actually the lower version is really nice). Plus, with the single exception of swinging the eighth note pairs, there’s no improvisation required here. This year, my grandmother, Bobbie Kay Turner, celebrates her ninetieth birthday. In planning for the celebration, I was stumped about what to give her. I wanted it to be unique, something no one else would think of. Finally, I had the idea to compose a new song. I contacted my friend, James, and he was immediately on board. In fact, he had the first draft of a new poem back to me within the day!  When my grandmother (“Mimi†to her grandkids) was 36 years old, she and my grandfather moved to Cayman Brac, Cayman Islands with their six children to serve as missionaries; and she has been there since. So, when I think of Mimi, I can’t help but think of the many times I’ve sat and watched the ocean with her. Knowing this, James created a text that depicts life as a ship’s journey across the sea. Throughout the song, you will catch snippets of my grandmother’s favorite hymn Amazing Grace which, like Horizon, is a song about a journey. My grandmother has lived a full, long life and continues to joyfully live each day. James’s beautiful lyrics perfectly capture her journey, particularly the final stanza.
