Bill Staine's cheerful and catchy song is a transparent metaphor for the value of diversity and inclusion. This arrangement was written a workshop song for novices to learn in an evening, but with the opportunity to develop it into a performance piece suitable for audience participation. Delayed chordal patterns in the middle voices help to fill out the tone, allowing even smaller groups to achieve a satisfyingly full sound. There is space left for for the rap section if desired, otherwise the piece is written in a way that allows for it to be cut out. This is a solid piece for any male acapella group. It can be learned quickly- and with a relatively simple alternating melody line, allowing for two soloists, it serves as a solid opener and/or a chance to showcase a couple singers who maybe aren't as strong of soloists within the group. Either way, its a fun song!

It was included on their 1982 album Toto IV, and released as a single on September 30, 1982. It reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart on February 5, 1983 (the band's only number one there), and number three on the UK Singles Chart the same month.The initial idea and words for the song came from David Paich. Jeff Porcaro explains the idea behind the song: a white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past.Paich said: At the beginning of the '80s I watched a late night documentary on TV about all the terrible death and suffering of the people in Africa. It both moved and appalled me, and the pictures just wouldn't leave my head. I tried to imagine how I'd feel about if I was there and what I'd do.In 2015, Paich explained the song is about a man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance. In 2018, Paich explained the song is about a person flying in to meet a lonely missionary. As a child, Paich attended a Catholic school. Several of the teachers had done missionary work in Africa, and this became the inspiration behind the line I bless the rains down in Africa.About the arrangementI have tried to keep as much of the original material used by Toto as possible, within the confines of a male voice choir arrangement. The arrangement is for TTBB and piano and can include sound effects made by the choir at the beginning to imitate rain and a thunderstorm. A bongo/djembe drum can be played through the choruses to add more of an African percussive feel. It sits comfortably within the middle of each sections range allowing for a strong and confident performance every time. The counter melody during the bridge section sets it apart from other run of the mill arrangements, making it impressive and unique to the audience despite its accessible and easy nature for the singers. Great for groups starting out and looking for something thats a quick learn, but also a great addition to bolster the programs of more advanced groups! There are many arrangements of this piece out there, but this one speaks for itself and was a favorite at many of my own groups performances. Enjoy!

This year, my grandmother, Bobbie Kay Turner, celebrates her ninetieth birthday. In planning for the celebration, I was stumped about what to give her. I wanted it to be unique, something no one else would think of. Finally, I had the idea to compose a new song. I contacted my friend, James, and he was immediately on board. In fact, he had the first draft of a new poem back to me within the day!  When my grandmother (“Mimi†to her grandkids) was 36 years old, she and my grandfather moved to Cayman Brac, Cayman Islands with their six children to serve as missionaries; and she has been there since. So, when I think of Mimi, I can’t help but think of the many times I’ve sat and watched the ocean with her. Knowing this, James created a text that depicts life as a ship’s journey across the sea. Throughout the song, you will catch snippets of my grandmother’s favorite hymn Amazing Grace which, like Horizon, is a song about a journey. My grandmother has lived a full, long life and continues to joyfully live each day. The text is thought to be loosely based on his conversion to Christianity. One of the most common tunes to be associate with the text is Restoration, sometimes known as Arise. This pentatonic tune comes from the Southern Harmony collection. This a cappella arrangement by Mark Lewis passes the melody between all four voice parts with key changes that place the melody nicely within every vocal range. Alternating between arpeggiating and homophonic accompaniment, this arrangement provides a wide variety of singing experiences for the choir over the course of the song.
