But, since the trumpet figures so prominently in the Bible why not try one?! And, since both the anthems and contemporary worship songs of today tend to neglect the second coming of Christ here’s an offering from the spiritual/anthem/jazz confluence.Angel, Blow that Trumpet is based on I Corinthians 13:50-57 and I Thessalonians 4:13-18. The style? Well, let’s call it “Natalie Sleeth meets New Orleans jazz!”You’re almost sure to find the voicing very approachable, yet thrilling for SATB (TTBB and SSA also available).The accompaniment is a dixie-land styling originally conceived for piano, string bass/fretless electric bass/standard bass guitar (it would be fun to have someone do it on the “big bass viol”), Bb clarinet, trombone and Bb trumpet. These parts are included with the choral score.Above all, it's fairly easy to learn and fun to sing!The clarinet and trombone parts are a lot of fun and the trumpet part features an easily playable/adaptable ending that nails the piece (actually the lower version is really nice). Plus, with the single exception of swinging the eighth note pairs, there’s no improvisation required here. Â This triumphant version of the well-known hymn starts off simply with a unison verse over an upbeat accompaniment. Â The second verse breaks into two parts, and the final verse has the melody over an altered chord structure, while the other parts support it with a Hallelujah-Hosanna fanfare underneath. Â The congregation could also join in on the third verse if appropriate. Â A glorious tag at the end leaves us all inspired. The piece, which is around 30 minutes, is composed for S:t Johannes Chamber Choir in Stockholm, conducted by Karin Oldgren. At the first performance Anders Paulsson, world renown saxophonist to whom the symphony is dedicated, was soloist on soprano saxophone. The lyrics, written by the composer, are dealing with man's existential loneliness, a loneliness that we paradoxically share with all other people. In the second movement some choreographic elements are added, as well as solo parts for the choristers. The instrumentalist is expected to improvise parts of the music. The last movement, Solitude, is available as an off-print for SSAA and TTBB.

Although a reduction for piano is printed in the score, its purpose is only to support the voices during rehearsal. Public performance is intended for a cappella voices.

It was first published in 1811 in the various hymnbooks that came out during the Second Great Awakening with various lyricists credited. Many publications attributed the song's tune to The Ballad of Captain Kidd, a popular, though much older, song and tune at the time. Earlier versions of the text are slightly different, but as with many folk tunes, it is difficult to tell which transcriptions are regional variants and which are errors by the transcriber.This arrangement of the tune by Mark Lewis is for a cappella TTBB Ensemble. All four voice parts are featured for a verse with different accompaniment each time. There are key changes to better place the melody in the ranges of each voice and there are moving notes in many background voices through most of the piece. As with many of Mark's arrangements, the outer voices will be pushed towards the extremes of their ranges even though the notes and rhythms are not incredibly difficult. Most intermediate choirs should enjoy performing this piece.

The arrangement follows the Adele version more closely than the Bob Dylan version, but leaves out some of her stylizations. It should be fine for barbershop contests.There are already several barbershop arrangements of the song. My goal was to write one that is accessible for beginning barbershoppers, but still has some fun moments and a musical development that supports the story. I have tried to maintain the quiet and introspective mood of the original, while still giving you the opportunity for some musical contrasts.The back half (which you can't see in the preview) has the third verse as a lead solo and the fourth verse as a lead-tenor duet, with the other parts singing doo-doo accompaniment. The second bridge (the storms are raging) has a higher tessitura and musical intensity than the first one.The arrangement is for male voices. It should also work for a mixed quartet with a male bass.
