Rhythm of Life is built over a five beat pulse, representing the heartbeat of life on planet earth. The two basic pulses are played by different groups of instruments and passed from one group to another, but never ceasing, even as our heartbeats never cease as long as there is life in us. Over these fundamental patterns are built little phrases or solos for the various instruments, including conversations between pairs of instruments - first the timpani and tubular bells, later the marimba and xylophone, and finally the conga drums and the snare drum – these conversations represent various interactions among different groups of life on planet earth. Published by J Garratt Composer (A0.1029072). 'The Hammer & Anvil' is the piece that adorns the balustrade of the band stand in Parade Gardens, Bath, UK. The band stand was forged by the National Heritage Ironwork Group as a gift to the city during their 2018 'BathIron' festival. The piece is written for 2 treble clef parts and a bass clef part and can be performed by any group of instruments. For the original performance it was performed on 2 Bb Clarinets and a Bass Clarinet.About the piece:'The Hammer & Anvil' is derived from the melody of an English folk song about a blacksmith (ironworker) which has been adapted and augmented to be used as a melodic foundation throughout the piece, similar to an isorhythm in medieval compositions. The piece is in two sections: the A section where the folk melody is confined to the bass and the B section where the melody is split between all three parts. A repeated rhythmic motif, representative of an ironworker using his hammer and anvil, is used to accompany and/or decorate this melody.

Asian Symmetries by Dan Heslink Asian Symmetries is a fanciful work which draws loosely from the musical procedures and sonic preferences of Indonesian and other Asian musical styles. It is scored for three percussionists, each with their own battery of instruments. Gamelan-like impressions might be inferred from the cyclical nature of its rhythm, using metal plates like cymbals and gongs to mark large units of rhythmic time. Also evocative are the faster moving elaborations and a preponderance of metallophones in the instrumentation. The work is medium to difficult in its demands. There are quick changes of instrument, planned to be manageable but requiring some attention to logistics Each player’s performance station must remain stationary, with all instruments in reach without moving the performer’s position. Percussion I and Percussion III players must set up next to each other so that they may share the tenor drum. A selection of mallets that allows different striking surfaces to sound good without undue picking up and setting down of mallets is suggested. Changes of meter and tempo occur, and an odd meter section sporting measures in 12/8, 6/8, 11/8 may require some additional attention. Sharks’ Teeth, a Game for any Number of Percussionists. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dan Heslink Sharks’ Teeth is a musical game, or contest, between two or more percussionists. It is based on rhythm, and can therefore be executed on any combination of indefinitely-pitched percussion instruments. Its execution relies on guided improvisation governed by preconceived thematic material and manners of elaboration. In addition to the two or more contestants, another musician functions as a Game Meister (GM) who controls that game’s progress and evaluation. Enclosed are the game instructions for a contest of guided improvisation, and a notated example for two percussionists and Game Meister, Shark’s Tooth. This score can also be played on recital. After reading the contest instructions, the composer recommends that contestants next play the notated example before attempting the game through improvisation. Besides being fun to play, this game is also an excellent tool for fostering concentration, musicality, memory and an understanding of musical structure. Winter Bells composed by Dan Heslink Imagine a cold winter evening in which church bells, sleigh bells, and other bell sounds are mixed into a tantalizing soundscape. Winter Bells explores the interaction of these sounds through chimes, sleigh bells, orchestra bells, marimba, vibraphone, two triangles, large suspended cymbal, large tam-tam, and two timpani. Winter Bells requires seven performers; the two chime players share one rack of chimes and one part. It presents mostly modest demands, both in performing technique in the number and type of percussion instruments. Challenges include rapid passage work in the part for orchestra bells, requiring smooth and even negotiation of the instrument, and a tour de force of polyrhythms at the end, where all bell timbres of the soundscape are juxtaposed. Some parts present more challenge than others, making it an ideal selection for ensembles populated by players of uneven levels of experience. To some listeners Winter Bells is possibly reminiscent of a sleigh ride without the horse’s hooves. It is sure to be an audience pleaser during a winter concert, especially close to Christmas and Hanukkah.

Taken from their third album Nightflight to Venus, the song was released in August of 1978 and reached No.1 in 5 countries, and peaked at No.2 in the UK.A cover of the song was released in 2007, by Finnish Folk Metal band Turisas. After years of playing it as part of their live shows, they decided to put it to record as a special edition EP in the wake of the success of their second full length album.KEY: G MinorDIFFICULTY: IntermediateThe piece makes use of several repeated rhythmic motifs, so once familiarised it is relatively easy to master. In a couple of spots their are short solo passages, but on the whole instruments work together in their subsections and are little exposed.

This composition begins with a 4/4 March. I wanted to write a composition that started with a simple chord. As the march progresses I added a mote here and there. Each note added continues until a complete musical composition is formed. But it doesn't stop there. Once the composition is formed it progresses to a solemn, smooth 5/4 section. This section then breaks apart to where each instrument has a solo. Then the solos are combined before it returns to the original rhythm with a different chord. This composition is a Bolero in 12/8. It begins with the initial rhythm that is played throughout the piece. The piece begins at ppp and increases in volume as each instrument plays the melody section. As each instrument enters, it forms a round of the same melody. The bridge begins with the continuing rhythm with each instrument adding their own note with the same rhythm until the complete quartet is playing the same rhythm in a chord. The bridge leads to the climax section where the initial rhythm continues with the third instrument imitates a tympani while the upper two instruments play the melody in harmony at fff volume. The Devil's Rag is a fun little xylophone rag based on some of the famous Green brothers' rags that really made xylophone literature catch on. This is more advanced and requires some quick hands, but is really entertaining to play and listen to. It is mostly in C minor, but plays in C major as well to depict the xylophone player trying to entertain the devil while keeping their own sanity. The player is the jester of the underground, making some interesting music and harmony while keeping rhythmic ideas quick and steady. Truly a joy to play.
