This piece is ideally suited for the Marimba Workshop (Pty) Ltd marimbas.www.marimbaworkshop.co.za  It was arranged for the Goede Hoop Marimba Band to be performed at the 2016 Education Africa International Marimba & Steelpan Festival in the Strictly Classical Category where the composer for this category for that year was Antonio Vivaldi. This performance has gone viral on YouTube. These young girls were aged between 11 and 13 at the time. It is written for African diatonic marimbas in C with an African feel but can be played on a variety of different instruments. Feel free to roll (measured or unmeasured) on the long notes.Whenever I teach this arrangement my students fall in love with Vivaldi and his music. The medley consists of music from Vivaldi's Four Seasons: Spring and Winter and his famous Gloria. A passacaglia is ... a musical form that is usually of a serious character and is often, but not always, based on a bass-ostinato and written in triple meter. from Wikipedia. This passacaglia is a slow theme and variations, in a minor mode, with a bass ostinato. I have 3 versions; this one is a mambo version for Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, String Bass and 4-part latin percussion.The only difficult part is dealing with the counterpoint, but it is worth the effort, it will impress your audience, and is fun to play. I will be uploading a PDF with the individual parts. I have ALSO uploaded a version for piano, viola and double bass.and a string orchestra version. You could make a whole concert out this one piece!

Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576482). A mad professor I invented during my childhood has been given fictional responsibility for some of my more outside the box compositions. I called him Professor Burble; he was probably inspired by TV cartoons in the 1960s.... The first Invention was for guitar solo (published by Productions d'Oz), the third one one was for two wind instruments (published by Musik Fabrik), and this one - number 4 - is for piano, strings, gong, cymbal, bass drum and side drum. It is in a relentless 5/4 rhythm and starts with a fugato idea on piano and strings (including several divisi moments), with gongs, cymbal and snare drums beginning about a minute into the piece.

They still worked together - and built this song in a tiny warehouse using whatever technology they could get their hands on. In a day where most music was produced in the large studios backed by industry money - they pioneered a hit without the big studio. Securing a loan, they procured essential equipment—a compact setup comprising an 8-track tape recorder, mixer, effects processors, synthesizers, a drum computer, and a compact dynamic microphone. Some of the emotions from their lives went into the song - a fresh start on the heels of emotional events. Reflecting on that period, Lennox candidly remarked, “I was feeling very vulnerable. The song was an expression of how I felt: hopeless and nihilistic.â€This version is not a cover. Fragments of musical elements are translated into the ensemble. While occasionally exhibiting moments of dance, the composition evolves into a more profound expression, capitalizing on the musical possibilities of a percussion ensemble. This original nonete (Flute, 1st Bb Clarinet, 2nd Bb Clarinet, Alto Sax, Baritone Sax, Bb Trumpet, Tuba, Timpani & Percussion) was first premiered at the University of Leeds in the UK. As a composer I utilized melodic serialism, consonant whole tone harmonies, intriguing chromatics, frequent syncopation, and a jazz flavour in several sections. Solos are presented by: Flute, Bb Trumpet, Baritone Sax and Tuba. The timpani and percussion (suspended cymbal being used in a high hat style and a woodblock keep things moving well. A number of my other original ensemble pieces are listed under my full name: Mark G. Turner.

Premiered at Colorado State University, October 16, 2016.It is common knowledge that the universe we see is composed of tiny particles known as atoms. For much of scientific history, it was thought that atoms were made up of three indivisible particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons.Thanks to contemporary advances in physics, we now know that these particles are, in fact, made up of much smaller particles and that these constituents sometimes behave in ways that confound what we thought we knew of the physical universe.In this piece, I have portrayed one type of these subatomic particles, the quark. There are six types (or flavors) of quark: up, down, charm, strange, top, and bottom. These are differentiated by the type of charge they carry and their masses.The first movement is Strange Quark. This flavor has a negative charge and is relatively light. Much like the particle, this movement often behaves in unusual ways.Top Quark, the second movement, portrays the quark flavor that is by far the heaviest. Slow and massive, this particle allowed for the study of the famous Higgs boson.The final movement, Up Quark, is light and decays quickly, much like this particle that contributes to both protons and neutrons.The universe is indeed a wonder to behold and its scale is hardly comprehensible to the human mind. And yet, it is becoming increasingly apparent that there exists an entire universe yet to uncover in the most infinitesimal pieces of matter. It is my hope that the wonder and mystery this inspires be conveyed through this piece of music.

The COVID Awakening is a marimba quartet for two 5.0 octave instruments. This piece is inspired by minimalism and minimalist compositional techniques combined with layering found in West African drumming, though it is not the only source of this specific technique. It was written during the beginning of the summer of 2020, when the Coronavirus, COVID-19, had started its grips on the United States in the forms of illness, death, and economic and emotional distress. This piece reflects on these early feelings of quarantines and sheltering in place, and using the techniques listed above the listeners are pulled in to listen between the notes. These reflections are found not in the music itself, but is different with every listen. The listeners’ ears will venture as they wish, and make this piece new with every performance, even though the notes and rhythms never change. Instrumentation: Two 5.0 octave marimbas, though only one marimba needs to be the full range. Marimba 1 can be a much smaller instrument if necessary. I’d suggest using rubber/latex mallets. Unless the performance is in a reasonably dry hall, this articulation and tone benefit does wonders for this piece. Each player needs only 2 mallets.

This piece involves the playing of one’s body as an instrument. For musicians, this piece is short, easy to setup, exciting for the crowd, a bit of a workout, fun to play and a challenge.My aim for this piece was to emulate the concept of ‘seeing sounds’ by only creating sound in the light. It was a challenge to get the lighting effect that provided us with a sharp difference between light and dark.Because it is such a physical piece, I would encourage the performers to add in choreography and to exercise the power of choice in terms of sticking (‘handings’ and ‘footings’) and the choice between standing and sitting. The performers may also experiment with visual mediums like talcum powder and other sound choices like using toy hammers instead of hands and choosing extremely thick shoes.

Retracements (2021)This performance proposal features a performance of Retracements (2021) for percussion quartet commissioned by Kevin von Kampen, at the University of South Florida (USF) percussion ensemble. Retracements uses Fibonacci numbers and Phi proportions that mirror percentages used by stock market traders to predict corrections of trends in the market. Fib. numbers used in Retracements dictate the length of short sections in the work, while larger sections emerge organically and less predictably with regard to Phi (GS). In short, the work unfolds structurally through the impetus of determinate decisions combined with intuitive and indeterminate factors. In this light, the work is a musical realization of the retracement principle. I am indebted to Kevin von Kampen, assistant professor of Music at the University of South Florida, and members of the Percussion Ensemble at USF: Katie McCarty, Jacob Barber, David Grullon, and Wyatt Hatch for their careful preparation of the work (performance materials available from the publisher-MJICMusicPublishing@gmail.com).

The experience would be marked by a kaleidoscope of varying styles from pop, avant-garde, or jazz. Is it mainstream - probably not. But, the artist is definitely recognizable (as a name), appearing across multiple genres. As a source of background to her song ‘Come to Me,’ I borrowed a palindromic idea exploited by Radiohead in their ‘Pyramid song...’ if we truly expand a swing feel to a twelve-eight meter and extend the pattern across two measures - the eighth notes would provide a total of twenty-four possibilities - and as in this work you get four, five, six, five, four a palindrome on 45654 that (when added) equals twenty-four.This version is not a cover. Fragments of musical elements are translated into the ensemble.
